Ace Hotel New York

Midtown, New York

The hotel

Ace by name, ace by nature, you’re in for a bit of rock ‘n’ roll when you stay at this unique boutique hotel! Indeed, you’ll find a Gibson guitar in most rooms and a stack of blank sheet music should you fancy composing a song or two. Choose between a guest room with fabulous retro furniture included or a loft room, located on the corners of the building with beautiful bay windows, curvy sofas and palatial bathrooms. Take advantage of the lobby’s photobooth for some artful shots. For dining, the Breslin is hip and happening, taking its style cue from the 19th century with distressed leather upholstery and dark wood panelling. The bar looks like a room from a classic Park Avenue apartment and is perfect to lounge with a cocktail before a night on the town. To wake you up in the morning, grab a gourmet coffee from the Stumptown Coffee Roasters Cafe, head out the door and start all over again!

First impressions is that it's trying too hard - industrial run down feel, lighting so low you can't see anything. A very trendy lobby bar that it was impossible to get a space in. The corridors are dark and unwelcoming, with people's room service trays left on the floor for hours and hours - I passed some one evening and they were there when I left the following morning. The room left much to be desired. The housekeeping seemed OK - it was clean, just very dated. Everything geared towards the aesthetic rather than comfort. The bathroom again was clean, the shower fairly powerful, but the bath very small indeed and the door didn't close properly. The room was a touch cramped - you couldn't walk around the bed due to the positioning of the "desk" attached to the wall. Only one bed side table, no wardrobe - just a few hangers and a hook on the wall. Aircon panel partially unattached, staining to the ceiling, old carpet, ripped sheets, the musk of mildew throughout. If they switched the effort that has gone in to the "vibe" and put it in to maintenance and some upgrades it could be very nice and a cool place to stay, but at this time it just feels rather run down and expensive for what you get. Everything was great! Check in and out was fast and correct. Thanks for the upgrade though. I’m always happy when people/Hotels remember guests for multiple visits. Location is great, and Ace is just a cool place - easy said.

Disclaimer: I'm relatively old and normally don't fare well at *hip* hotels. Dallin was a life saver after a ridiculously long flight from Seoul. He somehow found a way to help me out at the last minute after my reservation at a nearby hotel was booked on a wrong day. Above and beyond, lovely, fabulous. All of those words are understatements but I'll be back to experience more and perhaps write more! Read less

We actually stayed at the Ace for the first time when it opened 10 years ago and were impressed - value for money, buzzy, great location and service. We were looking for a hotel for a week stay with our two small kids. We opted for the Ace again, but I was apprehensive about the quality given its age. I shouldn’t have worried. We were looking for a hotel for a week stay with our two small kids. We opted for the Ace again, but I was apprehensive about the quality given its age. I shouldn’t have worried. The room was perfect with two large beds (they moved us to a higher floor so we had more daylight - and a view of the Empire State Building). The service was fab - personal, efficient and friendly. As a base, the location is great and it still retains it’s hip, edgy and buzzing vibe I remember from a decade ago. I just couldn’t make use of the club this time with the two kids in tow! Read less

Beware! Stay far away! Tried to reach my Wife staying at the Ace Hotel in NY due to an emergency. Beware! Stay far away! Tried to reach my Wife staying at the Ace Hotel in NY due to an emergency. It was 7am, I told the receptionist Scott Bower my wife’s name and room number...anyone could tell from my voice that I was desperately trying to reach her. Scott said it’s to early to call a guest room as they might wake the guests up. I insisted it was an emergency and he asked to call back at 9am...upon my insistence, he passed/transferred me on to security at the hotel where the person was rude, loud and unwavering, saying that he didn’t care what the reason was, that I should call back post 9am. Why would anyone want to stay in a hotel that responds in this way to an emergency that a hotel guest might have with his/her family? ACE, you are not in the business of service? You seem to be running a prison! Boycott this hotel! Read less
