Ace Hotel New York

Midtown, New York

The hotel

Ace by name, ace by nature, you’re in for a bit of rock ‘n’ roll when you stay at this unique boutique hotel! Indeed, you’ll find a Gibson guitar in most rooms and a stack of blank sheet music should you fancy composing a song or two. Choose between a guest room with fabulous retro furniture included or a loft room, located on the corners of the building with beautiful bay windows, curvy sofas and palatial bathrooms. Take advantage of the lobby’s photobooth for some artful shots. For dining, the Breslin is hip and happening, taking its style cue from the 19th century with distressed leather upholstery and dark wood panelling. The bar looks like a room from a classic Park Avenue apartment and is perfect to lounge with a cocktail before a night on the town. To wake you up in the morning, grab a gourmet coffee from the Stumptown Coffee Roasters Cafe, head out the door and start all over again!

What I love about New York is that there are plenty of quirky hotels to experiment with rather than opting for cookie cutter Marriots of Sheratons. And this is the point, there are plenty so to do well and get the repeat visitor they have to be good. To be honest, I stayed at the Ace because it is a block from where my friends live. The lobby and bar area are cool - I arrived late in the evening and the music was going strongly and there was a good buzz. The rooms are the wrong side of shabby-chic. It could be brilliant, but they need a few more creature comforts rather than trading on spartan. The pillows on the bed were very good, and the shower strong albeit small. There are lots of details that individually are good, but they don't add up well. the gym is good because people are ether too cool to use it, or not up early in the morning when I used it. Again, its the detail - one of the treadmills was out of order and the bike did not work with the programme settings etc. For what you pay these things should be fixed over-night. I also was not happy with the $29.00 per day "destination" charge. This is a stealth tax by any other name. For your $29.00 you get free internet (er...that's not free), a 10% discount in the bars etc (er...so you have to spend over $290.00 to make the 10% discount worth it). I did not have the charge explained to me on check in but was rather abruptly told it was detailed in the confirmation e mail of the booking. (er..who reads them?). So, I'll make it easy for you - add $29.00 to your day rate, and then the tax and then the New York tax etc etc. Ace need to drop this charge, it is not a resort where these things are more common. So, of this style of hotel there are certainly better, and not too far from the Ace Hotel Read less

Ok so I’ll start with the positives: great walkable location, cute bar and lobby area, and good hotel staff service. The hotel lobby def has a hipster vibe with its dim lighting and vintage feel. But I don’t know about you, but I expect the rooms to be given the same amount of attention as the other spaces. The rooms is where they completely fail.… Read more

But I don’t know about you, but I expect the rooms to be given the same amount of attention as the other spaces. The rooms is where they completely fail. Tiny, dingy, inefficient in every way possible. The room felt like a college dorm. Smells of mildew, and carpets need replacing. There’s no closet or place to store your clothes. The shower is so small, even a short petite person will hit the shower curtains as you try to maneuver..and eww...who wants to shower with a nasty curtain touching you? Additionally, there is ZERO counter space on the sink. Do you have toiletries? Forget about it, they will have to stay elsewhere because there’s no space for them. Do you like lotion? Oh you better bring your own because the rooms don’t provide any. If you enjoy the nostalgia of returning back to college dorm living, this is the place for you. If you’re an adult who wants to spend $300 a night on a well taken care of hotel room with even slightly above average amenities, stay elsewhere. Read less

The Breslin restaurant is perfect for breakfast or dinner and stays open late. The lobby bar is a great work space and I often find myself working late into the afternoon and sliding effortlessly into happy hour without having to change location. I have stayed here a number of times and would recommend to anyone who wants an affordable spot that's central to all of Midtown and below. Read less
