Midtown, New York

The hotel

If you crave the Manhattan nights you’ve seen in the sit-coms, Shelburne NYC’s got it covered. Just head straight upstairs to Rare View: the archetypal summertime rooftop bar, its 5,000 square feet hold a chilled cocktail party vibe, five unique ‘rooms’ including the picnic patch and champagne garden, and 360 degree views taking in sights like the Empire State Building and Chrysler Building. Back downstairs, Rare Bar & Grill serves up gourmet burgers with twists like tequila-soaked beef, aged whisky slaw, or lobster tail. If you can bear to leave this infinitely trendy hotel, you’ll find you’re in a similarly trendy neighbourhood. But still be sure to keep in mind the complimentary evening wine hour.

Hotel rooms in Manhattan can be notoriously small but this is definitely not the case at the Shellburne. Our room was very spacious and well equipped, with an enormous and extremely comfortable bed. The en-suite bathroom had both shower and bath, with shower gel, shampoo and conditioner all provided along with a hair dryer. The room was spotlessly clean and serviced each day. Our room was on the 2nd floor at the front of the building, but the busy Lexington Avenue traffic didn't present any noise problems and we enjoyed restful sleep every night. The reception staff were friendly and helpful (thanks to Michelle for printing out attraction tickets!) and an extra pillow requested at reception was on its way to the room as I exited the elevator! They were also able to arrange transport for our party of 6 back to JFK airport at a very competitive price. The only down side, we found, was the attached "Rare Bar", where draft beers were always unabvailable and the bar staff somewhat unfriendly, so we used the nearby "Junction" bar instead. The rooftop bar doesn't open in winter months but is still accessible for an excellent view of the Empire State building. The hotel is conveniently located, about 10 minutes walk from Grand Central Station and Subway and around 20 minutes walk to Macy's. The Chrysler Building is just up the road, as are branches of Starbucks, Pret-a-Mange and a couple of traditional NYC deli/diners. Read less

Not long returned from a five night break in New York having stagecraft the Shelburne. We were led to believe that New York hotel rooms are usually quite small. Not our room at The Shelburne which had plenty of space. The bed was enormous and really comfortable. Good size bathroom and a really warm room which was.. great as the weather was extremely cold. The staff were friendly and helpful and the hotel also has the advantage of having a restaurant on site (Rare bar and grill) which opened nice and early for breakfast which we used every day and also had dinner there on a few occasions, both of which were great. We also had a view on the Empire State Building from our room which was a bit special and in General the location was ideal being around a ten minute walk from Grand Central Station. We wouldn't hesitate to recommend this hotel again and should we make return visit would certainly hope to stay again. Ian and Jinny Johnson. (Cardiff) Read less

We had a large very Comfortable room for 3. Felt a little dated and basic & could easily improved with some small touches such as dressing robes. Friendly and welcoming hotel with pleasant staff. Great location for walking to landmarks and public transport. Daily free Happy hour in the lobby was a nice touch. We had a great stay.

Newly renovated, modern and clean. Staff was so welcoming and accommodating and the location was great! Walking distance to Times Square, Broadway and Rockefeller center/midtown. Had a cozy feel, not as big as other hotels, which I loved and the restaurant Rare was delicious!
