Shelburne Hotel & Suites by Affinia

Midtown, New York

The hotel

If you crave the Manhattan nights you’ve seen in the sit-coms, Shelburne NYC’s got it covered. Just head straight upstairs to Rare View: the archetypal summertime rooftop bar, its 5,000 square feet hold a chilled cocktail party vibe, five unique ‘rooms’ including the picnic patch and champagne garden, and 360 degree views taking in sights like the Empire State Building and Chrysler Building. Back downstairs, Rare Bar & Grill serves up gourmet burgers with twists like tequila-soaked beef, aged whisky slaw, or lobster tail. If you can bear to leave this infinitely trendy hotel, you’ll find you’re in a similarly trendy neighbourhood. But still be sure to keep in mind the complimentary evening wine hour.

We had a nice room with a kitchenette in a good area. The doorman was wonderful and helped us a few times. The front desk staff is argumentative. They would not clean the room even though we were staying for 4 days because I did not give 24 hour notice. They would not clean the room even though we were staying for 4 days because I did not give 24 hour notice. If you stay there you should just give "24 hour notice" as soon as you check in if you don't want to clean your room and empty your trash yourself. The room price includes room cleaning services presumably. But they aren't bringing in staff sufficient to clean the rooms. How the cleaning staff are getting by now, I don't know. Also they charge from $45-$50 per day in extra hotel fees for services that are not provided, such as slippers, masks and extra cleaning and for wi-fi, which the website still prompts you to pay for. Despite other reviews, this was a terrible place to stay. We usually stay at the Rodger which was closed due to Covid. Dump, chipped paint, 120 degrees in the room, filthy, no maid service, shampoo/ conditioner not replenished.

This is a decent hotel -- though for me the neighborhood is the selling point. But their practices are very deceptive -- basic bait and switch. They offer one price for a room, then tack on close to $200 in fees to the total. This is way more than most other hotels. Even their offer of a certain amount to "spend" on their canteen is deceptive… Read more

They offer one price for a room, then tack on close to $200 in fees to the total. This is way more than most other hotels. Even their offer of a certain amount to "spend" on their canteen is deceptive -- they price everything just slightly higher so that it limits how many items you can get each day. Amazingly, they continue to get away with this. My rating is primarily for these practices -- which I find disrespectful to their guests. Read less

Because of COVID, I was a little skeptical. My fears were calm when I saw a sticker placed on each of the unoccupied rooms. It was superbly clean and even the tv remotes were placed in plastic. Room was large and bed was comfy. Loved it. Read less
