The Surrey

New York, USA

The hotel

The Surrey is the first and only hotel in New York City to be added to the Relais & Chateaux family of luxury properties in the past 20 years. As you’d expect from an establishment that includes JFK and Bette Davis as previous patrons, dining facilities are exceptional and from the Michelin-starred French fusion restaurant, Café Boulud serving delicious light brunches, prepare for nothing less than the best. Ideally located amongst the brownstone terraces and artistic haunts of Manhattan’s Upper East Side, taking in the sights is always at a premium and thanks to a private roof garden which combines café culture with signature cocktails, views of Central Park have never looked so splendid. If you prefer to relax at a slightly more active pace then the fitness centre is definitely for you with the massage service and spa facilities providing the perfect way to wind down after an exciting day in the city. As you’ll be staying just a stone’s throw from the likes of the Guggenheim, the Frick Collection and the MET, art is always an essential ingredient and thanks to the Surrey’s own private collection, you’re bound to discover some phenomenal contemporary works.

The start of our time at the Surrey was less than stellar… when we arrived (at about 5:00pm) we were informed that the hotel did not have the room that we’d reserved because the previous occupant was refusing to leave. Obviously, after a long day of travel, that was not what we wanted to hear… but luckily for us, Alan (the front desk manager on duty) stepped in to save the day! He was so incredibly accommodating and so very transparent about the issue at hand, which was very refreshing. He quickly found us a room for our stay, and even upgraded us to a suite to make up for the inconvenience. He then personally escorted us up to the rooftop bar, where we relaxed and indulged as we waited for our room to be ready. When we finally got into our room, it was absolutely beautiful! Unfortunately, we had to deal with a couple of front desk people who were not terribly friendly or accommodating to actually get checked in (around 8pm), but Alan’s amazing customer service throughout the rest of the stay made up for any unpleasant employees we encountered in the meantime :-) In the end, our stay wound up being amazing. The location of the Surrey could quite honestly not be any better… Central Park is just a step away from the front door! The Rooftop Bar has one of the most beautiful views of the city I’ve ever seen… along with great food and great service (thanks Rene!). Alan made sure that our stay was extraordinary and my family & I could not be more grateful. If you're looking for a beautiful, boutique hotel in an incredible location... the Surrey is the way to go! We will definitely be back!! Read less

Nice room except left sink was plugged and right sink was missing the handle for the cold water and the handle for the hot water came off while my wife was using. Should not have happened! I asked to be moved(I am a light sleeper), but they were full and assured me they could move my wife and I the next day. The next day I mentioned the issues with the sink and water faucet handles and the woman at the front desk was very apologetic. They did moved us to a higher floor(#1010) and away from street noise. Not much of a view but quiet which was what I asked for. The room was perfect in terms of quiet, but only one sink, not great. I just assumed all rooms came with two sinks. They do not and you should ask. We finished out the remaining two days there. Staff is always really good at The Surrey and Café Boulud is a great choice for dinner. We always eat there at least once during our stay. Bottomline, a couple of hiccups, but we will be back. Read less

I came to the Surrey to have surgery at a nearby hospital. Pablo, who works with the concierge, went out of his way, above and beyond, to make my stay comfortable and enjoyable. He was, by his choice, at my beck and call to help me move around which was difficult after surgery. Definitely give Pablo a high five if you have the honor of meeting… Read more
