The hotel

The Surrey is the first and only hotel in New York City to be added to the Relais & Chateaux family of luxury properties in the past 20 years. As you’d expect from an establishment that includes JFK and Bette Davis as previous patrons, dining facilities are exceptional and from the Michelin-starred French fusion restaurant, Café Boulud serving delicious light brunches, prepare for nothing less than the best.Ideally located amongst the brownstone terraces and artistic haunts of Manhattan’s Upper East Side, taking in the sights is always at a premium and thanks to a private roof garden which combines café culture with signature cocktails, views of Central Park have never looked so splendid. If you prefer to relax at a slightly more active pace then the fitness centre is definitely for you with the massage service and spa facilities providing the perfect way to wind down after an exciting day in the city.As you’ll be staying just a stone’s throw from the likes of the Guggenheim, the Frick Collection and the MET, art is always an essential ingredient and thanks to the Surrey’s own private collection, you’re bound to discover some phenomenal contemporary works.

Arrive just before Xmas and was upgraded to their penthouse suite. Fantastic views. Excellent room service personnel- fast, friendly and professional. Bar is one of my favorites. Breakfast not up to par with the various staff members. Will definitely stay here again.

The hotel was in a great location for us but our disappointment was with things not being as advertised. The hotel was in a great location for us but our disappointment was with things not being as advertised. For example, the Studio with two Queen beds shows a cute little terrace in the images when you select that room type upon booking - however that cute little terrace is actually NOT available for that room type. Also, they boast about the beautiful roof top terrace but it's closed for more than half the year! When these were serious factors in choosing the hotel, despite the high price point, it is a huge disappointment to not have access to any outdoor space that was an expected part of the stay. I highly recommend calling the hotel before booking to find out exactly what is available during your stay, especially details that are important to you. Read less

This property should not at all be associated in anyway with the Relais & Chateaux collection of incredible properties. This hotel has nothing which would relate it to Relais & Chateaux. My check in was horrible. I paid for an upgraded room and got a room with cracked walls, a broken window which almost cut my finger off like a guillotine. The shower flowed so much water, an environmental waste, that we had to have both shower nozzles on just to shower. I had to request enough soup for two people because they only left enough for one. I did not receive my Spa credit in the form of a voucher. I paid for a $100 voucher in my reservation and when I checked in I had to ask for it and when I did they told me I had a $45 voucher. When I checked in I waited until 14:30 for my room. I got to the property at 09:30. This is not a problem. The problem is the lady at check in, checked in 3 others before me and they did not have to wait. The lady who checked me in also offered a free upgrade to one of those couples checking in. Evelyn the concierge tried her best to help later on. However, the management at this hotel is not empathic, responsive, assuring or reliable. They can care less what my experience was. I have traveled all over the world for 29 years. Your collection of properties is the most impressive to me because of the consistency of the quality of the properties and the staff. The Surrey has no business being a Relais & Chateaux hotel. When I asked where the Relais & Chateaux books were they told me that they did not have any because they were getting the new one. Any property I have stayed at in Italy, Peru, anywhere, the classic Relais & Chateaux book lets me discover my next adventure and whether the book is orange or yellow new or old, there is always one in the room and the lobby. I cannot believe how much money I absolutely wasted staying at this hotel. It was a birthday present for my daughter. I should have just given her cash. This was a less than memorable souvenir. I will be posting this review on the member site of Relais & Chateaux, Yelp and on the Surrey's web site. Read less

Great staff and super comfortable room and bathroom. Having Boloud and the lobby bar downstairs really worked in such harsh weather. My wife and I would not hesitate to stay at the Surrey again. If there is one critic, it would be that the interior furnishings could use a refresh and the magazines were a few months old.
