The Surrey

New York, USA

The hotel

The Surrey is the first and only hotel in New York City to be added to the Relais & Chateaux family of luxury properties in the past 20 years. As you’d expect from an establishment that includes JFK and Bette Davis as previous patrons, dining facilities are exceptional and from the Michelin-starred French fusion restaurant, Café Boulud serving delicious light brunches, prepare for nothing less than the best. Ideally located amongst the brownstone terraces and artistic haunts of Manhattan’s Upper East Side, taking in the sights is always at a premium and thanks to a private roof garden which combines café culture with signature cocktails, views of Central Park have never looked so splendid. If you prefer to relax at a slightly more active pace then the fitness centre is definitely for you with the massage service and spa facilities providing the perfect way to wind down after an exciting day in the city. As you’ll be staying just a stone’s throw from the likes of the Guggenheim, the Frick Collection and the MET, art is always an essential ingredient and thanks to the Surrey’s own private collection, you’re bound to discover some phenomenal contemporary works.

The front desk staff is poorly trained, rude, sloppy and disrespectful. Rarely have I had to deal with such incompetence They claimed that 3 packages were never delivered and offered no assistance to find out what happened. It was only after my departure that the boxes were found in a closet by housekeeping. Most of the time the staff does not even look up from the front desk when you arrive. It is also not uncommon to have to leave a message when trying to contact them, and then they are annoyed when they do answer. They also sent me to find the doorman to recuperate a box that I left at the front desk. I wasted 25 minutes. They could have easily taken are of this and sent the box to my room. It was one disappointment after another. Read less

This is not a 5-star hotel. No one offered to take our luggage or show us to the room. The elevator broke multiple times during a few day trip. No one answers the phone when you call down for things that weren’t provided such as toilet paper or shampoo. The door men, whose only job is to open the door, failed 50% of the time. The TV is older than… Read more

No one answers the phone when you call down for things that weren’t provided such as toilet paper or shampoo. The door men, whose only job is to open the door, failed 50% of the time. The TV is older than I am. The bed is older than I am. Every piece of furniture in the room is older than I am. The bathroom is dated. There are yellow stains on the tile. No bottled water was provided at check-in? So weird. The windows rattle and are foggy. The AC sometimes works and sometimes doesn’t BUT IS CONSTANTLY LOUD! The water comes out of the faucet the color of milk. The carpet is frayed and needs to be replaced. One out of four nights, turn down service showed up! We called about this on two nights separate nights but no one picked up! Spend a few extra bucks and stay at the famous place across the street. I wish I had. Ugh. Oh. One last thing! HOW IS THIS A RELAIS CHATEAUX? It’s more like a Relative Merdehole. Read less

During my most recent stay, my first as a mother traveling without my baby, I was directed to the lobby bathroom when I asked for a private place to pump breastmilk. Absolutely unacceptable and insulting! Aside from the horrendous treatment I received as a nursing mother, the service overall is severely lacking (room service takes over an hour, chilly guest reception, water issues and sporadic turn down service). Room service used to be from Cafe Boloud and now is a subpar hotel kitchen meal that has bad croissants and cold coffee. Read less

The heater in my room didn't work, leaving the room very cold at night. I had to report this 4 times total: around 9:00am, 3:00pm, midnight, and 1:00am. Each time, they said they were working on it and it would resolve itself. On the 3rd time, they finally sent someone to the room to actually look at it. He messed with it, said it would come on in 5 minutes, then left. After 30 min. it was still broken and I reported the issue for the 4th time (it's now 1:00am). They finally gave up on fixing the heat and offered a new room. I didn't want to go through packing and unpacking all my stuff at 1:00am so they sent a space heater instead. Two major problems with this -- first, nobody should have to report the same issue 4 times. After the first report, they should take initiative on their end to follow through until the issue is fixed. Second, there was no offer to make things right -- a discount on that night's room rate, a credit toward the restaurant, etc. Absolutely nothing of real value, just verbal apologies. There are plenty of hotels in NYC and I won't be staying at this one again. Read less

This hotel is the best! It is small, but cosmopolitan; I felt as if I had traveled back in time. The rooms are lovingly and perfectly restored; the DUX beds are an added bonus. Find a room with a fireplace and little balcony; what a surprising treat.
