Gardens Suites Hotel by Affinia

Upper East Side, New York

The hotel

In a quiet corner of New York, but close enough to the sights not to have to bother hailing a yellow cab, Gardens Suites Hotel by Affinia is a rare refuge from the Big Apple buzz. Hidden away on a tree-trimmed road on the Upper East Side, you can escape to the chic calm of your suite, where homely comforts include your own kitchen, and luxuries include grocery and breakfast deliveries. Downstairs, the Serenity Lounge’s complimentary Tea Bar has a bespoke blend laced with chamomile, citrus and vanilla designed to soothe you (and that ubiquitous New York ‘caw-fee’ to perk you back up). When you do fancy some Manhattan exuberance, just grab one of the free bikes and follow the hotel’s sightseeing app and you’ll soon find yourself in nearby Central Park, Museum Mile, or Bloomingdale’s.

The room was much bigger than the usual city hotel room, with a small but well-appointed kitchen, work table area, two beds, a sitting area and bath with dressing area. The bathroom could use some sprucing up (chipped and patched grout, older tub) and shower gel, shampoo and conditioner were in large pump bottles, not my preference for sanitary purposes, though I know this is "green". Beds were very comfortable and Nigel, on duty at the desk, was especially accommodating and helpful. Lots of stores and restaurants nearby for what you might need. Read less

This hotel is very well located, the staff is welcoming and accommodating, the suites are spacious and the kitchenette is a savior, but the carpeting needs to be replaced in the common areas and in the rooms. Location and Space are the two best qualities of this hotel. Easy access to Central Park, subways, restaurants. With a healthfood store down the block and pretty much everything else one could want close by. The rooms are spacious, I assume all are, but the 1 bedroom, 2 queen, definitely was. Good: -soft sheets, decent pillows and ok mattress..though it's on its way to too old. -Small bathroom, but with enough space for toiletries and a window. which is nice to have, but if next to balconies of other building can mean smoke stink. -Nice lobby -Dishwasher Meh: -the room, while clean, didn't smell fresh. While I do no like chemical odours or air fresheners, this room smelled dusty. I assume it's the very old and very tired vacuum the cleaning staff have to deal with. Would be impossible to clean the cheap carpet properly with that thing. -the decor, while modern and lacking too many dust collectors, which is good, is a bit too spartan to make it cozy. -the kitchen is lacking in amenities. No decent way to boil water. Only one small frying pan, though with a lack of ventilation, I guess frying should be discouraged anyhow. No toaster oven, just a sad, cheap toaster. Basically not enough to cook a decent meal, just for pasta, minus a strainer. A mediocre Hyatt House, for example, is stocked better. -the cheeky pricing and fake extras, that are actually just disguised fees. If the price is right, we'd stay here again, now that we have lowered our expectations, but I don't think it's worth paying too much for this establishment, as it is now. Even the guest in the penthouse, which seems amazing in photos, was quite disappointed and agreed that this place is "dusty". Read less

I have stayed at NYC Affina Gardens off and on for close to twenty years and have just returned from another successful and wonderful trip. If you want to imagine for a short period of time what apartment living is like on the Upper East Side, Affina Gardens is your go to. The spacious rooms (bigger than many apartments) and actual kitchens afford you that opportunity. Location is walkable to the Met as well as Mid Town and Broadway. I have stayed there with young children, adults, teenagers, you name it. The hotel accommodates every age group. CVS, Urgent Care, Quest Labs, grocery shopping, Starbucks and reasonably priced restaurants with takeout are in the neighborhood (its Covid, what can I say). All the staff, especially the transportation coordinators, Kris and Mike are superb. Need a town car to and from JFK, a taxi to Twin Towers, help with deliveries or luggage, they accommodate!
