Kimpton Hotel Monaco Portland

Portland, Oregon

The hotel

Proudly promising all of Portland’s biggest attractions, bikes, brews, and books, Kimpton Hotel Monaco’s downtown spot makes experiencing them easy. Complimentary bikes are just the beginning; there’s a free 24-hour gym, complimentary hot drinks in the lounge each morning, and wine hour in the cosy lobby each night, often featuring piano or jazz swing bands or showcasing local chocolatiers or wineries. High ceilings and picture windows are reminders of its department store heritage, while touches like bird-sprinkled wallpaper adds a whimsical twist. The happy hour’s equally playful; so good it actually lasts three hours, it features small plates, microbrews, and cocktails. And, after you stroll back from Pioneer Square, the waterfront, or the block-long Powell’s bookstore, the hotel’s Red Star Tavern’s ready with innovative American dishes.

So, you have to understand that I travel A LOT. I can lay my weary head on sheets of Egyptian cotton or on my own tee shirt (a makeshift pillowcase when sleeping rough) and, as long as I feel like I am getting a fair value, I will usually be happy. So, you have to understand that I travel A LOT. I can lay my weary head on sheets of Egyptian cotton or on my own tee shirt (a makeshift pillowcase when sleeping rough) and, as long as I feel like I am getting a fair value, I will usually be happy. What most often will make or break my impression of a place is the attitude of the people who work there and the SERVICE I receive. So, read on, happy traveler, with the understanding that what I am really planning to praise is the awesome people who work here! To be clear, the facilities were nice and the location was fantastic! There is a sushi bar on the corner (conveyor belt- fun and convenient!) and more food trucks than I could sample in a week as well as a variety of more upscale dining options all within a couple of blocks. Pioneer Square and other tourist spots, the university, Powell's bookstore... the location is ideal! The room was comfortable (although I could have done without the trolley right outside the window... I think it's the flip side of the convenience coin), and I was delighted by the coffee/tea in the morning and cocktail hour in the evenings. These touches (they even had honey for my tea!) go a long way with me... but what really made my stay was how helpful and kind everyone on staff was! I lost my brand-new airbuds (not used to how small they are yet!) and, to a person, the staff went out of their way to help me look. The front desk folks phoned housekeeping and then maintenance-- and you know their care is real when Miles (one of the staff) gets down on his hands and knees to look under the table! And found them! I was in Portland for a conference and had no choice about where we were staying, but you can bet that next time I am in town, I will be returning to the Hotel Monaco because I KNOW that they will take good care of me! Props to Miles and all the great people at the Kimpton Hotel Monaco in Portland! Until we meet again-- Read less

We walked to the waterfront, VooDoo Donuts, dinner, Powell's bookstore, Nordstrom etc. It was a $7 Uber ride to Nob Hill for ice cream and window shopping that night. We walked back in 25 minutes. They have free bike rentals for sight seeing. They also have a lovely wine and appy social hour with live music. The lobby has large games to play like scrabble and chess. It's the first hotel lobby I've actually just gone and sat in at night. The room itswlf was large, beautifully decorated and had a cool view of downtown. We were on a hypo allergenic floor which was nice since two of us had allergies all weekend. The location itself is a little sketchy with homeless people asking for money and just peeing in random places but we did see community patrol officers out so it didnt feel too unsafe. The underground valet parking accommodated our large vehicle but it was a tight squeeze. Read less

We booked four rooms through hotels.com back in January. One for us, and three for employees. When we went to check in for ours, they told us they have 3 of the 4 reservations and it must be hotels.com’s fault and to call them. In the meantime they have some crappy queen rooms available that we can pay for instead of the king suites we booked, and we can call hotels.com and maybe get a refund for that other room. WHAT? I called hotels.com who informed me that there would be no possible way for them to receive 3 rooms and not the 4th. They actually called the hotel directly who “magically” found our reservation, but oops, still doesn’t have the king suite we paid for, and oops that’s just the way it is. WHAT? We asked the front desk about someone else in our party just to confirm that they had arrived as we had dinner reservations, and they informed us that they hadn’t checked in at all. We were worried as we were getting close to dinner as it was, so we checked in with our friends directly to see what was up and they had checked in yesterday. Omg. Face palm. The Front desk absolutely has no idea what they are doing and I am amazed there are any positive reviews at all. The final icing on the cake was when we set up for room service to deliver breakfast between their window of 6:45-7:15am and they called at 7am that morning to inform us that the kitchen doesn’t even open until 8. Why even have that window available on the form? Needless to say we are leaving bitter as hell after spending over $700 here and will never ever ever stay again. I recommend the Porter or Benson if you want a good experience. Stay far far FAR away from here. Read less

We have been long time members of Kimpton's loyalty program and have stayed at their hotels in Portland for years. Before it was purchased by Intercontinental, members always got the best rooms. Apparently the opposite is now true. We were put in a room over the side street where all of the large garbage and glass recycling bins for the surrounding properties are. Pick up begins at 4:30 a.m.and lasts until 5:30 a.m.every morning. It is an older building with old windows that do nothing to block the sound. Needless to say we were not well rested during our stay. They are also now charging a $23/night "amenity" fee in addition to the room charge, local fees and taxes and $45/night for parking. The fee is for: Use of our Quiet Room, Unlimited local and long distance calls, Access to Press Reader's selection of 5,000+ newspapers and magazines from around the world (value starting from a $1 per day or $29.95 per month), 24-hour Business Center, Nightly entertainment in the Living room, Upgraded WiFi speed throughout the hotel’s guest rooms and public spaces for up to 5 devices (Normally a $14.99 charge). I guess we could have used the quiet room to sleep in. For the rest I have a phone and Ipad for and as a member my wi-fi is supposed to be free. We noticed several new hotels in the area that we will be checking out for our next stay in the city. Read less

This was my first time to stay in a Kimpton hotel. Kimpton may be my new favorite hotel! the staff was so friendly and seemingly not fake friendly. When I arrived, Sasha and Nick checked me in and really started the stay off right - with great smiles and helpful advice! When we left out that evening to find a place to eat, Lo and Daniel had great suggestions. The second day, the cold air wasn't helping my sore throat, so Kyle brought a humidifier and hot tea to the room to help soothe it. Kenny helped multiple times when I got my key card too close to my phone and needed to reconnect my room key. Jonathan and Henry were always there to open the door, smile and ask if we needed directions. I can't say enough about these staffers! What I'm trying to say is that these people make the hotel a success. Their patience with all the crazy travelers is matched only by their warmth and kindness. The room itself was lovely although I didn't find the ice bucket and machine until the last night. My only real desire was to have a nightstand with at least one drawer for stuff (like meds, lotion, etc.) that I didn't want to keep on top of the stand. I also wanted to use the refrigerator, but there was so much stuff in it for purchase (and on the table in the room) that it was somewhat annoying. Maybe a box to put everything in if you're not one to spend frivolously on overpriced water, drinks and snacks. The location was perfect. The price was pretty fair - especially for the area - and the design was friendly and chic. I love that pets are welcome. They even have welcome biscuits for dogs. Would that hot water for tea or coffee was available longer than 9 AM. Love the cold water available throughout the day and the happy hour music and wine. Read less
