Kimpton Hotel Monaco Portland

Portland, Oregon

The hotel

Proudly promising all of Portland’s biggest attractions, bikes, brews, and books, Kimpton Hotel Monaco’s downtown spot makes experiencing them easy. Complimentary bikes are just the beginning; there’s a free 24-hour gym, complimentary hot drinks in the lounge each morning, and wine hour in the cosy lobby each night, often featuring piano or jazz swing bands or showcasing local chocolatiers or wineries. High ceilings and picture windows are reminders of its department store heritage, while touches like bird-sprinkled wallpaper adds a whimsical twist. The happy hour’s equally playful; so good it actually lasts three hours, it features small plates, microbrews, and cocktails. And, after you stroll back from Pioneer Square, the waterfront, or the block-long Powell’s bookstore, the hotel’s Red Star Tavern’s ready with innovative American dishes.

The rooms are uniquely furnished and the in room shampoo, body wash, and lotion smell fantastic. The happy hour is nice and they had a gentleman playing guitar on the night we were there (May want to arrive early if you want a seat.). There were a couple of items that keep this from being a five star review. The main reason was our wait for our room. In their defense, we did arrive early, but were to receive a text once our room was ready. I did not receive a text. Finally, I went back up to the desk to inquire at which time the room was ready. I noticed other parties waiting for their room too. However during our wait, they did store our luggage so we could explore the city. We did enjoy our stay and it is a lovely hotel. Read less

The first night we took the easy route and dined in the Red Star Tavern attached to the hotel and had our best meal of the trip! We lucked out being there for VooDoo Donut night where we each received a donut of our choice. On the last night of our stay we took advantage of the free consultation with the Pet Psychic who was excellent! The nightly social hour is a big hit and well attended in the large cozy lobby. Great location, well appointed rooms and delightful staff makes this place a top choice! Read less

It was just a little...off. An in-room KIND Bar was $7 (extreme, especially given the Amenities Fee we paid!) No in-room coffee machine; according to a bathroom sign, we could request one from the front desk. There was an issue with the hot water. The room decor tried too hard to be offbeat (or maybe it wasn't trying at all..."The wallpaper looks… Read more

No in-room coffee machine; according to a bathroom sign, we could request one from the front desk. There was an issue with the hot water. The room decor tried too hard to be offbeat (or maybe it wasn't trying at all..."The wallpaper looks like my dad's pajamas!" said my husband). The heavy immovable furniture in our King Suite was angled in such a way that, as a couple, we couldn't watch TV in the sitting area together. Small things, but unfortunate. On the positive side, the staff was gracious, we got a good room rate, the evening social gathering was fun, the location is great, the hotel was clean. The hotel allows pets and also has pet-free floors. Would we stay here again? Yes. But we might try somewhere else first. Read less

They are helpful and friendly without being intrusive, always offering to help. The happy hour is a great perk, great atmosphere and the occasional adorable dog to pat, add live music and funky comfortable seating it’s a great start to any night. The rooms are fun and comfortable, the bed was cozy, I wish there was coffee in the room is my only complaint. They do have coffee available until 9 weekdays and 10 weekends, but I like to lay around in the am. Parking onsite is expensive but I paid the price to have someone else park my obnoxiously large rental car. If you forgo housekeeping you will save the earth a little and earn yourself some $ for the restaurant. I love this place thanks for a fantastic stay! Read less
