The Hotel Zags

Portland, Oregon

The hotel

Like a living art installation, The Hotel Zags echoes downtown Portland’s cultural soul. Its setting among the sparkling theatre and art scene is just the start. The building itself has the makings of modern art, with its mid-century minimalism played out in crisp lines and simple colours. Inside, they’ve curated a collection of more than 500 regional artworks, which amplify the simplicity of the design. And outside, the showpiece of its urban garden is a 15 foot high living wall – a ‘gallery’ of plants that provides the backdrop for the private courtyard’s fire pits, lantern-lit walkway, and neatly clipped planting. It’s an ideal spot for cocktails and small plates from Nel Centro, the swanky yet simple hotel restaurant, which transports you straight to northern Italy and southeast France with its Riviera-inspired dishes.

My room was spacious and clean and the staff were all exceptionally friendly and accommodating to some special requests, including sourcing a projector which allowed me to do a few practice runs of the presentation I was giving the next day. Edwin Martinez, one of the hotel's sales coordinators, truly went above and beyond. I also highly recommend the restaurant, Nel Centro. Read less

I had to open a window in order to cool the room off, however there are no screens on the window so you get bugs in your room. When the in room air unit is running the fan is so loud you can't sleep with it on. I'm positive no one cleaned the bathroom before I arrived. There was still pee on the underside of the toilet seat and watermarks on the floor in the bathroom. Some of my co-workers were awaken at 3 am because they decided to dump what sounded like all the glass recycling outside of guest windows. They load the room up with overpriced snack items and wine that take up all the room in the small fridge. There are no microwaves in the units either. No breakfast is provided. No place to get coffee even on site. Read less

I liked this hotel as soon as we walked in. I loved the decor and vibe. Check-in was easy and the front desk agent gave us a room with a better view without us asking. The room was small but well-appointed. The snack credit came in handy with late-night munchies and we received extra credit since we opted out of laundry service. I liked that… Read more

Pros: The hotel is well located in downtown without being loud. My room was spacious, clean, well furnished, and comfortable. Pros: The hotel is well located in downtown without being loud. My room was spacious, clean, well furnished, and comfortable. The hotel is stylish, has a beautiful patio, and a good restaurant, though it sometimes tries a bit too hard to give off an arty feel. Cons: I had prepaid my stay through a third-party site, but the hotel wanted to charge me an additional "amenity fee" of $25/night, something that had not been mentioned anywhere while making the reservation. It required three separate long conversations with three different front-desk clerks to clear this up. (They ended up removing the fee.) The office staff was friendly but not especially competent. Routine tasks (like printing out a copy of my receipt) took forever. In general, the service was not great. On one day I returned to my room at 4 pm and found the room still not cleaned. Read less
