The Hotel Zags
Portland, Oregon

The hotel
Like a living art installation, The Hotel Zags echoes downtown Portland’s cultural soul. Its setting among the sparkling theatre and art scene is just the start. The building itself has the makings of modern art, with its mid-century minimalism played out in crisp lines and simple colours. Inside, they’ve curated a collection of more than 500 regional artworks, which amplify the simplicity of the design. And outside, the showpiece of its urban garden is a 15 foot high living wall – a ‘gallery’ of plants that provides the backdrop for the private courtyard’s fire pits, lantern-lit walkway, and neatly clipped planting. It’s an ideal spot for cocktails and small plates from Nel Centro, the swanky yet simple hotel restaurant, which transports you straight to northern Italy and southeast France with its Riviera-inspired dishes.
