The Saguaro Palm Springs

Palm Springs, USA

The hotel

The strapline, ‘Pina Coladas for breakfast – no judgements’, sets the feel-free-to-just-be tone of the Saguaro (that’s Sa-Wah-Roh, pronunciation fans). This rainbow-coloured oasis – just a hop and a skip from downtown Palm Springs – has everything you might need wrapped up a Pinata-bright Mexi-Cali package that’s as cheerful as it is chic. It’s no wonder the Saguaro has backdropped numerous fashion mag shoots in its time. But even if the only runway you’ve ever graced is at Heathrow you owe it to yourself to hit the Saguaro. Test the tacos and sample the ceviche at the El Jefe restaurant, perfect your Upward Facing Two Foot Staff in one of the daily yoga classes, or simply take the short trip from your balcony to the pool, frozen daiquiri in hand, and blisss out under the desert sun.

I think this hotel gets a lot of stick so I’d like to be fair. We knew from the reviews that it is primarily a pool party/young vibe hotel so we knew what to expect before we arrived. We are in our fifties and were staying for one night on our way to Vegas, Grand Canyon etc. We needed somewhere to break up the journey and that’s what we got. The room was spacious. The bed was clean and comfortable as were the pillows. Once our door was closed we didn’t hear a thing and slept really well. We have stayed twice now and if we did this trip again wouldn’t be worried about staying there. There is a courtesy bus to town which is very handy if you want to book it. We did the first time but we were too late arriving this time. If you do go check the website for the party weekends if you don’t want to join in 🙂 Read less

I was so excited for a girls weekend trip! I had followed the Saguaro on Instagram and it looked fantastic. My stay started with a disappointing experience at check in. They had overbooked and moved us from the 2 queen suite that I reserved to a king suite. I complained that we wouldn’t have enough room to accommodate sleeping so another king room next door was given. This worked but wasn’t ideal for our group. The couple checking in next to us had walked into their room and someone else was already staying in that room. Next we were not able to check into our suite until 730 pm because it was not ready. Once we got the keys, we quickly realized the air conditioner was not working effectively. The suite was about 20 degrees warmer than the king room next door. The linens were damp on the bed. We knew they were over booked so we tried to make the best of it and hung all the blankets up to dry. Next we discovered the room was missing several items (alarm clock, trash can, robes). We went swimming that night but the pool was very dirty (I couldn’t even see my feet in the water!) So the next day we purchased day passes at the riviera to use their pool for the day (it was great I would recommend you go there!) We spent two nights, those in the suite were miserable the entire time due to the temp and smell of the room. On check out, our bill was incorrect, we had been charged for bar charges we did not make and extra charges on the king room that was supposed to be comped due to the hotels mistake. It took about an hour to clear up the incorrect charges. Eventually it was corrected but not without undue stress. Next time I will try the Riviera. Read less

Let me start this review by saying that in the past we have had both good and bad experiences at this hotel. For the most part our experiences have been fair. We like this hotel as an affordable option when we want to make a last minute trip to the desert. This stay we opted to book our stay through Groupon and prepaid for our rooms before arrival. Upon arrival I let the front desk know we had booked our back to back nights separately and would need to merge the reservations. He assured us that this would not be a problem but he would need to run my credit card separately for each nights security deposit for $50 each. I agreed and said it would be no problem. We checked in and headed to the pool which we immediately noticed to be murky. My 6 year old son was wearing goggles and exclaimed he couldn’t see anything underwater. We decided it was best if he kept his head above water 😬. We noticed that there were lots of people their using the pool for day use that didn’t seem to be staying at the hotel. There were no clean towels and dirty towels everywhere in the pool area. As far as the grounds—There was a lot of work happening, including large vents pumping out paint fumes (I’m 8 month pregnant so this was concerning), tons of trash, paint crews going in and out, large sheets of plywood and drywall. The key card entry doors for the stairs were propped open leaving them accessible to anyone going in and out. The first night I noticed a hold on my card that was 3x the amount of the security deposit. I called and was assured it would soon “fall off”. The next day we were in our room eating lunch and a housekeeper entered our room without knocking and asked us if we knew when we were checking out. We told her not until the next day. I called the front desk to let them know and they brushed it off saying “oh the didn’t have you staying in the same room, um it’s ok, you are fine”. We headed back to the pool that was just as dirty as the previous day. Upon awaking in the morning I noticed another hold on my card, in addition to the previous hold again for 3x the security hold. When checking out I was presented the folio that didn’t match the holds on my card. I asked the front desk attendant and she said they would soon fall off. On our way home I decided to call. I was quickly transferred to the front desk manager. I explained the cc situation and she said that “this happens with some groupons”. They authorize for the room again, plus resort fees and security hold. This made no sense to me because we paid for our rooms in full prior to arrival via Groupon. Needless to say, after this headache plus the dirty grounds. We will stay elsewhere. Best part of out stay was eating at El Jefe. Good food and service. Read less

This hotel is on the basic side but we loved it. Great pool. Opposite is a great collection of shops. The hotel provides a mini bus into the city centre. The day we were there there was an evening street market - wonderful. No tea or coffee facilities but a Starbucks in the parade of shops nearby.

last night i checked into the @saguarohotels in palm springs for a couple days to myself. i looked at the map the girl at checkin gave me and saw it was next door to the gym and told her i was a light sleeper and preferred not to be next door to the gym. she said i wouldn’t hear anything. low and behold i was up half the night from banging noises. this morning i went out onto the balcony only to find a dead cockroach. cute. i went to the front desk to explain my situation and ask to have my room changed. she said there was no rooms available now but i can move when one becomes available. i asked her if i left my stuff packed up if someone can move it because i didn’t want to wait around all day. she said no because they were short staffed. you being short staffed sounds like a you problem, not a me problem. i worked in hotels for the better part of my early twenties and all of the above is not okay. if the girl at checkin would’ve just listened to me initially and moved my room all the other problems that followed could’ve been avoided. also, the interiors need major updates. paint chipping, stains, tvs that are half the size of the one you probably have at home and balcony furniture that doesn’t look like it’s been wiped down for months... i could go on and on. but this is basically a motel 6 with bright paint.
