The hotel

Nestled in the iconic Lafayette Building, an architectural landmark built in 1907, the Hotel Monaco Philadelphia offers luxurious accommodation close to all attractions. It’s also one of the few hotels in Philly to feature a rooftop lounge – located on the 11th floor, it’s a great place to relax with a few drinks, admiring the views as the sun sets on another day. The Red Owl Tavern is also a popular spot for guests and locals alike, serving hearty meals in a warm and friendly atmosphere. If you’re keen to keep trim, there’s a fitness centre on-site. Alternatively, bikes are available for complimentary rental on a first come first served basis – an excellent way to get around, make sure you bag yourself a two-wheeler at some point during your stay. Every evening, the hotel hosts a complimentary wine hour in the lobby lounge – not just a great way to meet and mingle with fellow guests, it’s also handy for picking up tips on sights to see off the beaten track and places to eat!

Wife and I stayed here for 2 nights during a recent visit to Philadelphia. We picked the Kimpton Hotel Monaco specifically for the location to sites we wanted to visit (Liberty Bell, Independence Hall). It did not disappoint. We booked a corner suite and ended up in room 916 on the top floor. The room is huge, and offers a great view of the historical sites. Check-in was easy and we enjoyed the evening social hour (they served complimentary wine and cider). Service overall was very good. We did not try the onsite restaurant. Two things which prevented me from giving this a 5/5 stay: 1. While the front desk and lobby areas of the hotel are beautiful, the room we stayed in definitely showed some signs of wear (i.e. damaged areas on the furniture, tear in the couch). Sink in the bathroom also drained super slow (we didn't call down because we were only staying 2 nights). 2. While parking is expensive ($50 per night valet), we knew that ahead of hand and were ok with it. What I didn't expect (and annoyed me) was that a 15-minute session to use the computer in the on-site business center (2 computers and a printer in a room) cost $7.95. I had some work I needed to do during our trip that required printing some documents (which is $1 per page to print) and racked up ~$30 in charges. When I'm paying $200+ per night for a room, nickel and diming me for using services which are normally free at other hotels made me chuckle a bit. Overall, we had a pleasant stay and I really cannot stress enough how great the location is. Read less

I've had the pleasure of staying at the Kimpton for a romantic getaway with the hubs once and attending conferences here two other times in the last three years. Planning another visit over Easter with the kids and look forward to it! Great boutique hotel with IGH Rewards upgrades and hotel extras like morning coffee and wine happy hours. Free coffee and wine? Yes please! The head concierge, Rashid, aims to make your stay (or meetings) the best he can be. This past September I called him on my way downtown, asking he assist in making dinner recommendations for our group of 15 for THAT night of our conference and he delivered. Fantastic asset to the hotel and Kimpton chain. When my husband and I visited last August for a kid-free extended weekend, Rashid upgraded us for my husband's birthday and personally made sure we enjoyed our stay 110%. As mentioned above, we're hoping to visit over the long Easter weekend and chatting with Rashid again. All in all, you can't go wrong with this property's amenities, comfortable and stylish rooms and public areas (meeting staff run well, too, and this coming from a previous meeting planner) and LOCATION, LOCATION, LOCATION! However it seems every time I return, the experience has been trending down. No longer are you greeted with a cocktail at check-in (at least not my last 2 visits), and no longer do the rooms seem to be kept up to snuff with a true luxury boutique hotel. However, it's still a solid hotel and I really hope they can get back to the level this location was at a few years back. Read less
