The location is lovely, very secluded and surrounded by mariners. It’s away from the hustle and bustle of downtown San Diego, however there is no nightlife at all. We had to drive to other parts of San Diego to eat at night as everything on shelter island was closed at literally 6pm! Very dark at night making it difficult to walk anywhere. Rooms: very disappointed in the rooms. We had 3 small children, so a garden view suite was plenty of room. However there was a smell to the room upon arrival, almost like an old musty smell. The kitchen was the most disappointing of all. Cupboards were falling off their hinges, paint on shelving on the inside peeling off. Felt very dirty and I washed everything before use. House keeping were obviously aware of the state of the kitchen as they attempted to line the cupboard shelves with paper towel. Little things, like our kitchen sponge looked used from the previous occupiers and hadn’t been replaced! That’s so unhygienic! Bathroom was basic, but shower/ tub combination very old with poor water pressure. Housekeeping was very slow to clean our room, we returned from a day out at 5.30pm ( left at 10 am!) and they were still in our room cleaning it. No apology, nothing. We were made to sit on the balcony whilst she finished making the beds! They charge a ridiculous “ resort fee” which is so expensive and $17 a night for parking in addition to the resort fee. We couldn’t find a park one night it was so full! I asked reception( as there were no parks ) and was told “ just keep looking”. We drove a Tahoe which was difficult to manoeuvre in the tiny car parks. No consideration or alternative suggestions where to park. Staff were very unhelpful. When checking in the staff member spoke so quickly that we couldn’t understand him. Directions on how to get to the room we’re literally “ circled a map of our room location “ and sent us on our way to find in the dark with no clue where to go! There was construction occurring in the middle of the resort.. which I understand had to occur but waking up to construction noises every morning was not ideal considering we were charge so much for a “ resort fee”. Perhaps the resort fee should have been waived for those staying at the time of construction? Also, on the Sunday of our stay we were woken at 7am but shouting in a microphone and a blow horn which we later found out was a running event the resort was hosting. No communication from the resort at all that this was occurring! It frightened my children to wake up to this noise! It felt like all the resort wanted was our money and didn’t care about the facilities and it’s occupants once you’ve paid!! I would not recommend to stay here.. Read less

Secluded, comfortable, peaceful. I needed to recapture my spirit and Humphreys helped me do it. The pool is beautiful and the restaurant was lovely and the food very good. There was construction going on by the pool that was too loud and went on for a couple of days.

Every single person I dealt with or encountered were friendly and helpful and definitely made you feel welcome. Definitely a great place to stay in San Diego, especially if you want to step out of the generic hotel box. Now, if I could just reconnect with lost and found about the HydroFlask I left behind.... Humphreys Half-Moon Inn is located on Shelter Island in San Diego, which is a stunning location in terms of views and access to plenty of restaurants and other activities. The hotel itself is arranged in two back-to-back crescents, with a very attractive pool and spa area in between. All very appealing so far. But then things start to go downhill. This hotel was clearly top quality 20 to 30 years ago, and the management - judging by the compulsory "resort charges" applied - believe this is still the case. We booked a garden suite, one of the most expensive rooms. While the suite was spacious, it otherwise did not live up to expectations. A stale smell greeted us as soon as we opened the door. The carpet was stained in several places. One of the bar chairs was so dirty we couldn't use it. The freezer shelves were rusted. The bathroom is stuck in the 90s and needs complete replacement. Clearly the resort is in need of significant maintenance and updating. We would also suggest some customer service training for the front desk staff, who were not particularly welcoming or helpful, and in fact acted as if they felt we should be grateful to be their guests. I asked if there was a map of Shelter Island and all I was offered was a San Diego map full of advertisements; no suggestions were made for things to do on our visit. Also: parking is $18 per night. Wifi is included in the compulsory resort fee. Read less

The location on Shelter Island is fantastic. Minutes from the airport, you are just across the street from a very nice park on San Diego Bay. You'll see sailboats, cruise ships, kayaks, people fishing. It's a great place to walk or run. And if you're up early, you'll see a beautiful sunrise. The hotel is clean and quiet, and the staff professional, friendly and efficient. We enjoyed breakfast at the hotel's restaurant and it was excellent. But, there are plenty of restaurants an easy walk away. The on-site concert venue is also excellent. Not really a bad seat in the house. The only reason I'm giving 4 stars instead of 5 is because of the uncomfortable mattresses. I couldn't sleep on the mattress in our room. Clearly it was old, and/or a manatee had used it as a trampoline. We requested another room with (hopefully) a better mattress. The staff gladly moved us to another room, and while the mattress was slightly better, it still had no support. Clearly, the mattresses in those particular rooms need to be replaced. I don't even think they get turned around or turned over, based on the fact that your head is actually lower than your feet when you lie down. That said, I would still come back to Humphrey's again, and hope the mattresses have been replaced by that time. Read less
