Kimpton Hotel Palomar San Diego

San Diego, USA

The hotel

We love the chill out spaces at this chic hotel. Firstly there’s the Palomar’s lobby living room where you’ll find the evening drinks reception and morning hot drinks. You should also try the soulful Mexican street food at Curadero, the hotel’s flagship restaurant — the cocktails are good here too. At the outdoor rooftop pool and lounge there’s more cocktails, plus a pool menu and great views of downtown. Talking of downtown, if you want to stroll out, you’re near the shop and restaurants of the Victorian Gaslamp District and an easy walk to the waterfront.

Unfortunately, this was the worst hotel experience I have ever had in my life, for the following reasons: The room we stayed in was incredibly worn down, damaged, and unclean. It smelled like body odor in the hallway and throughout the hotel. The temperature in the room was not adjustable and the A/C didn’t cool the room properly. The bathroom door did not offer any privacy, there was a wide gap between the door. We found dirty underwear in the room and the surfaces of the desk, nightstands, and bathroom felt sticky. Despite paying $50 to valet our car, it took 30 minutes to get our car. There was no Ice machine available on the floor. The restaurant was closed & there was no food on site. There was no coffee machine in the room & the rooms were very tight. The game room floor was closed & the amenities were incredibly limited. The staff was rude & unresponsive when we brought up our concerns. They said they'd switch our room and never did. There is no parking onsite, the only parking was across the street. Unfortunately, there were unhoused people in the surrounding area of the hotel and it created unsafe conditions for tourists. We got chased twice, in one instance an unhoused person followed us into the parking garage and in another instance we almost got hit by another person running by who appeared to be very far gone from drug use. The hotel didn't do anything to mitigate this situation and there was no security around either. Every morning we had to run to the parking garage so that we wouldn't get followed. Since the hotel restaurant was closed (which we were not informed of prior), we had to go out for every meal and it was just a very volatile situation. We splurged a bit to stay at this hotel since we were celebrating our 8 year wedding anniversary and staying at this hotel nearly ruined our entire trip. Read less

Don't be fooled by the nice pictures of this hotel. In addition to seeing someone else's hair on the wall in the shower, the floors were completely scratched up. Check out the pictures I posted of the room. Oh, and the refrigerator was not working. We requested a cot and they didn't have anymore to offer. Hallways were dingy and narrow. This hotel… Read more

Booked a last minute weekend get away from LA to SD. For a rating of 4.5 star hotel. They should have given it a 2. I understand we are living in different times because of the Pandemic. This is not a reason why there should not be any housekeeping done. The hotel lobby looked run down, carpets in hall ways were dirty, the hotel stank. The… Read more

This is not a reason why there should not be any housekeeping done. The hotel lobby looked run down, carpets in hall ways were dirty, the hotel stank. The hallways were stuffy and hot. The room was small. I honestly felt like I got bamboozled. For the price, this is not worth the cost. Read less
Image of the Tripadvisor rating Incredibly overpriced rundown property

This hotel could very well be the WORST value in San Diego. The nights we stayed (June 25 and 26, 2021) were north of $500 per night. There were homeless people in front of the hotel upon arrival, the windows of the lobby were dirty. The floor was dirty. The restaurant and bar were still closed (STILL!). The room was tiny. There were homeless people in front of the hotel upon arrival, the windows of the lobby were dirty. The floor was dirty. The restaurant and bar were still closed (STILL!). The room was tiny. The minibar post COVID has still not been restocked. The shower did not have a handheld sprayer. There was something sticky on the bathroom countertop that had not been cleaned. The windows of our room were filthy. Happy Hour by the pool consists of cheap red or white wine... no liquor included. On top of all of this, the charge to valet your car is $50!! Yes $50!! The property is also in a terrible location... two miles from the harbor, more than two miles from the zoo. This hotel should close for total renovation. In the meantime, the room rate would be more appropriate at around $165 a night. This is a dump. Hard pass. Read less
