Kimpton Hotel Palomar San Diego

San Diego, USA

The hotel

We love the chill out spaces at this chic hotel. Firstly there’s the Palomar’s lobby living room where you’ll find the evening drinks reception and morning hot drinks. You should also try the soulful Mexican street food at Curadero, the hotel’s flagship restaurant — the cocktails are good here too. At the outdoor rooftop pool and lounge there’s more cocktails, plus a pool menu and great views of downtown. Talking of downtown, if you want to stroll out, you’re near the shop and restaurants of the Victorian Gaslamp District and an easy walk to the waterfront.

This hotel (like other Kimptons) is very proud of its cool factor that wears thin quick. Yes, theres a very heavy dramatic door to enter/exit the lobby. Yes theres wine hour and coffee hour. Yes the lighting is dark and the clientele pretty young. But underneath all that its just a decent hotel. Bed was fine- but had one of those duvets that falls apart in the night leaving you with a bare blanket and some sheets. The shower was great but those big soap dispensers weren't the cleanest. I was on the 11th floor in a corner room that was kinda small but well appointed. I had a big corner window overlooking nothing but it got good light. The valet guys were really helpful and eager to please but it was like $60 to park with them and UNLIKE what it says on the website, there is no self-parking option at all (even for a fee). I found a hotel a few blocks away but it sure seems like there is new management doing things their own obnoxious way, regardless of what the website says (I was told "they will have to change that" as if it was my fault for noticing). Location is close to Balboa Park and to Gaslamp area. Note that San Diego, like all American cities, is dealing with a homelessness boom that you will certainly notice in the hotel's downtown neighborhood. My biggest gripe was Sunday morning: thin walls, OK , what can ya do, but lots of housekeeping activity starting at 8 am and VERY loud- banging doors, talking to each other and on the phone. I hate to wail on people trying to do their job but seems like they could have some awareness that most people on vacation are trying to sleep on a Sunday morning. Read less

I very rarely publicly criticize brands but one of the brands I have adored since their founding in the Bay Area. KIMPTON HOTELS, lost me and my company as a brand forever. I have been traveling for over 30 years and “early check in” has always been complimentary if a room was empty the night before. This has ALWAYS been the case at every hotel I have stayed at, on every continent. This specific. Hotel the Palomar in San Diego, I have frequented at least 20 nights over the past two years, not including my employee stays. In short we have spent $35,000 at this hotel minimum over the last two years. So imagine my shock when I was told by a very kind front desk manager that I had to pay a FULL DAY RATE to check-in early. He told me the new manager implemented this policy recently. Since I have a huge day in the studio, I kindly asked him to inform the manager that he just lost a loyal Kimpton customer forever and he also cost his brand a corporate account. Short term financial thinking costing a company a long term customer. Ridiculous. Read less

The hotel is conveniently located downtown, walking distance to the stadium, as well as Balboa Park (about half a mile to either landmark). The staff at the hotel was very professional and friendly. Our room, on the 19th floor, was very comfortable with a nice view of the city. The bed/room was very comfortable, we did not hear people walking up and down the hall and did not hear neighbors despite the hotel being busy. We also used the valet parking, but a few dollars extra and peace of mind for having the car safely parked. A very nice stay at the Kimpton Hotel Palomar! Read less
Image of the Tripadvisor rating Convenient to airport and to Blue Line

We stayed at this hotel because it is less than a block from the 992 airport bus and the Blue Line trolley. The room was average. No major issues, but a little worn for a luxury hotel. The gym was quite well equipped and we really appreciated being able to keep some of our luggage in storage while we visited Tijuana.

There are many restaurants around but I didn't want to walk somewhere to eat for every meal. The second day we asked for extra towels, we got half of what we asked for. There was no cleaning done during our stay. The first night the room was very warm, maintenance came right when our little one fell asleep so, it couldn't be fixed the first night. Thankfully they did offer a fan, which helped a little. It is $50/day to park...what the? We could have parked across the street but that was $40. The rooms are small, no bathtub, just a rainshower. The floor was dirty I couldn't walk around with bare feet because I kept stepping on crumbs and dirt on the floor. My daughter had a separate room a Read less
