Kimpton Hotel Palomar San Diego

San Diego, USA

The hotel

We love the chill out spaces at this chic hotel. Firstly there’s the Palomar’s lobby living room where you’ll find the evening drinks reception and morning hot drinks. You should also try the soulful Mexican street food at Curadero, the hotel’s flagship restaurant — the cocktails are good here too. At the outdoor rooftop pool and lounge there’s more cocktails, plus a pool menu and great views of downtown. Talking of downtown, if you want to stroll out, you’re near the shop and restaurants of the Victorian Gaslamp District and an easy walk to the waterfront.

The hotel staff was courteous and professional. Huge shout out to Astrid and Andres for their help. Also, the valet attendant that assisted us was spot on, just wish I remembered his name. They asked for my name and I provided it and they couldn't locate my reservation. So I checked my app and realized I did not finalize my reservation while I was making it on my travel app. The front desk jumped into action and arranged a room for me at the rate I booked and got me checked in immediately. They also were able to accommodate all of on the same floor. The room was well appointed and very spacious for a downtown San Diego location. I loved the rain shower, in room mini fridge, and the WiFi had a great speed. The bar downstairs was open for togo cocktails from 5pm to 11pm. The location on 5th Street was near some really great dining options. Most importantly is the staff here was incredible! Read less

Upon making the reservation, I’ve indicated special request/remarks that I required no feather products due to allergies, and that a special occasion was the purpose of the stay. Upon check in, the room was said to be not available as I arrived earlier than the standard check-in time of 4. I was asked the purpose of my stay which I said was an anniversary and was briefly acknowledged. I was then offered an upsell to a suite room with additional $35 which I agreed to as I did not want to wait for a room. He did not mentioned or confirm about the feather allergies, which my partner just took an allergy pill as it’s just a one nighter. When we got to the room, the room was nice with great views. But there was a spot stain on the sofa, bathroom sink does not drain properly, yellow stain on the flat sheet, one of the shower lightbulb was blown, mirror tv not working, and bed was uncomfortable (personal preference). I also requested for bath robes and ice on 2 separate occasion and each took 20-30mins. At check out, I asked for the breakdown of the bill at front desk, as I saw that the hotel amenities fees was still there. I booked the good neighbor offer rate which suppose to have it waived. I had to bring it up for him to wave it off. I asked for a billing folio to be sent as well. Around 4pm, I called for the billing folio to be sent again and did not receive it. At 7.15pm, I realised that a laptop was left in the room. I called the hotel and they directed me to an online platform to place in a request for a missing item. I asked if they had someone on site to confirm the item was there which I guess due to covid they did not have anyone to check. I then asked for my billing folio to be sent which I was placed on hold as she went to check a guest in, a guy answered and I repeated myself, and he place me on hold again, and the girl that first assisted me answered and then helped to send it to me. I was place on hold for a total of at least 15 mins. The whole call was 34 mins, to get a copy of my bill, and to ask about a lost item. The HSKP manager assisted with the retrieval of the item the following day. Read less

To be fair, this trip took place during the covid quarantine, so as we all know, nothing is "normal" right now. My daughter (17) and I needed to get a break from our house, and she had the day off, so I took the day off, and we headed to downtown SD for a little break. The hotel and everything around it felt pretty deserted. The only employees we saw during our stay was the 1 employee working the front desk. We took a tour of the hotel, and it was eerily quiet. The pool was closed at the time, there were no food services, and we did not see any other customers on our floor. With that being said, I'm curious as to why the hotel does not automatically upgrade all its customers to guarantee excellent reviews! Of all the empty rooms in the hotel, we were given room 1440. We had a slight city view and a view of the building (Courtyard) behind us. The tv was tiny and on a dresser to the side, so we really couldn't get all cozy in the bed and watch tv. The bathroom had a sliding glass door as its door that did not close completely. If one of us had had stomach issues, it would have been an embarrassing situation. I'm not sure what genius thought that door would afford any privacy! The room was clean and the shower was nice and hot with nice shampoo/conditioner/soap. When we checked in, we asked if we could have our check out bumped to 12. We were told we would have to ask in the morning, and we might have to pay extra. That caused us a good laugh....were they suddenly expecting a crowd to show up? We did ask in the morning, got the extended time, and did not have to pay. Overall it was a decent stay. However, since I'm pretty sure there were only about 10 people staying in that huge hotel, it would have been a kind gesture to put all of us in upgraded rooms. Read less
