Because the staff were all lovely, although I’m still waiting to hear back from the attendant who is trying to fix the WiFi. But there are just a lot of little things not working. I had the flu when I checked in, with accompanying chills. So I really wanted to take a hot bath immediately. The bathtub is designed with a permanent glass plate at the front of the tub. Hard to reach around it to turn the faucets. You almost have to get in the tub to do it. And then I couldn’t get the shower to convert to the tub faucet. Just wouldn’t do it. So tried using the shower to fill the tub, but the drain wouldn’t stay closed. Finally had to call the maintenance staff. Took them a while to get it working. And even then, the drain never closed. Then the extension phone by the bed wouldn’t work. And finally, no WiFi for some reason. Or I should say no way to connect to it on my computer. Still waiting to hear. Works for my phone. Oh yes, ordered room service. They need to change their menu to reflect the higher prices they’re now charging. Not a lot, but still... Beds were comfortable. Pillows were great. Rooms are bright and sunny Read less

It is a classic hotel but clean an updated. Service was top-notch. We had breakfast in the Grant Grill and enjoyed it. At night we had cocktails at the bar and Rex our bartender were excellent. We used the concierge twice. Albert helped us plan two days, one involving Balboa park, the gas lamp district and a morning at La Jolla followed by Coronado Island. His advice was spot-on. We felt like ninja tourists! We look forward to a future stay with the rest of our family. Read less

The U. S. Grant Hotel is a beautiful hotel in the heart of downtown San Diego. The beds are AMAZINGLY comfortable I slept like a rock, the sheets were soft and crisp. The rooms were perfect. The one glitch for us was the $50 per night parking fee which was undisclosed beforehand; a hundred dollars for 2 nights was a bit much.

We had so much fun having cocktails and a light dinner at the on site restaurant "The Grant Grill", including a unique drink served in a beaker. We stayed overnight for a girls birthday weekend and the location can't be beat; shopping, massages, lime bikes nearby, etc. The service was excellent, the general manager and front desk staff was so friendly. I love this property, if you want to stay somewhere very special when visiting San Diego, you won't regret this choice! Read less

I am an Ambassador Elite member of Marriott's rewards program (top tier customer). I recently completed stays at to other Luxury Brand hotels this month and found this, my third, lacking. I will lead with the positives and then share some of my disappointments. The Good: 1. The valet team here is on the ball. No waiting 20 minutes for your car. They keep the arrival area running smoothly, act professionally, and are quite thoughtful - offering directions, cold water, and a smile. Very well done. 2. The decor is appropriate to the history of the property. Nicely appointed, especially the bar and restaurant areas. 3. They have an engineer on duty 24/7 to address maintenance issues. 4. Ample comfortable seating in the lobby if you traveling or waiting to meet with others. The disappointments: 1. If you turn on the privacy light to sleep in or otherwise be left alone, housekeeping will still call to ask if you want your room service. Please, the light on means I want to be left alone. 2. The thermostats in the room are equipped with motion sensors. If you are a sound sleeper, be prepared to wake up one or more times during the night either sweating or freezing because the unit has shut off. 3. No tubs in most rooms. The showers are single heads - nothing fancy at all here. No step or stool if you want to shave your legs or otherwise scrub toes. 4. Certain staff will only do certain things. For example, the housekeeping staff doing turn-down service left dirty dishes in my room which were placed next to the ice bin that they filled nightly. 5. We had a corner room facing 4th Ave and Broadway. The windows are far from soundproof and the traffic noise - sirens, beeping bus lifts, and similar - make a hell of a racket. 6. Room service is ridiculously slow. I called for beverages and/or ice several times during my 8-day stay and it too 30 minutes or more for it to arrive. 7. The house phone is not answered promptly. I often had to call 2 or more times and let it ring 5-6 times before getting an answer. 8. The bathroom door has opaque glass, so while privacy is afforded, if you go to use it at night and are traveling with another, the light is sure to wake them up. 9. The desk chair is terribly uncomfortable. 10. Be warned - the beds are super soft and the pillows offer little support. 11. No pool or hot tub on property and the ones on offer across the street at the W leave a lot to be desired. 12. Breakfast value is poor at best. I was also sad that I was unable to score an upgrade to a suite using my Suite Nights (I have lifetime Titanium status and am currently Ambassador status). I had check in problems that could have been made easier had a bit of thought and consideration gone into the matter. The manager may contact me if he/she would like further details. Overall the value just isn't here, especially for a "luxury property". The rooms at the Marriott Marina are far more comfortable if you want to stay with the brand - especially if you're in town for a conference at the Convention Center. Read less
