Bijou

San Francisco, USA

The hotel

This hotel’s ‘bijou’ rooms belie its ‘big’ location, just moments from the attractions of Union Square and the downtown district’s endless shopping and dining options. But it’s not just the prime location that makes Hotel Bijou so popular; guests get free double feature movies every night at the hotel’s Petit Theater – complete with complimentary popcorn. Inspired by the city’s cinematic classics, each guestroom has its own unique nod to the films that have made the region a favourite for the silver screen. With photos from a different film in each room, you’ll find everything from Hitchcock’s The Birds to Dirty Harry, Mrs Doubtfire and American Graffiti lining the walls.

Image of the Tripadvisor rating I have stayed in nicer motels

No a/c, wifi that doesn't work, horrible linens and pillows, and rooms that are really small. Also, this is homeless central. I booked on hotel tonight, which usually has good hotels, but this ancient excuse for a hotel shouldn't have made the cut. Stay away from this place.

I stayed here for a couple of nights in May and while the hotel itself is fine, be warned the area around it is DIRE! It’s the Tenderloin, I get it, but I’d stayed in the Nikko just a year ago and that’s up the road, but if memory serves me right i never felt as anxious as I did staying here. You do not feel safe walking around at night and the fact that it’s located bang near a rowdy sports bar will only add to your woes. I get that homelessness in SFO is a consistent problem and out of the hotel’s control, but how much would it take to just hire a 24 hour doorman to ward off those spaced out homeless people so that guests can at least feel safe coming in and out of the hotel if nothing else? The service was at best tepid. I was lagging around a huge backpack and the receptionist took FOREVER to check the guests before me in. It didn’t help that it was 3pm and their room wasn’t ready, so that’s an issue right there, but her laid back approach didn’t help matters either. To be fair, she did offer us complimentary drinks in the bar downstairs which looked lovely and had a classy feel about it, but it totally felt like she was doing it out of obligation because of the hotel’s tardiness. San Fran is an incredibly expensive city and for a solo traveller like myself it would have been useful to stay somewhere in a nicer part of the city. The Bijou was cheaper, and the room was serviceable, but for the extra few quid I’d rather have stayed somewhere else where I didn’t feel so consistently on edge. I left underwhelmed and disappointed. Read less

great idea with decent upgrades.... unfortunately the homeless population is out of control. Drugs on every corner and everything else that comes with it. The hotel was done well with a great bar staff trying to catch the “boutique” wave going around right now for hotels. Fancy bartenders and dinner but the breakfast was very lacking. We were on the 3rd floor above a roof space (thought this would be ok) but the acoustics from the alleys and buildings echoed all sirens annnnnnd!! conversations had by the ample amount of homeless people in its immediate area. There is no hiding the fact that there is a homeless problem in SF it's confronting at times and the smell foul. The TEDERLION area is pretty sketchy, So if you are a little timmed best to steer clear of this area. Again - hotel is nice enough close to alot of food options, taxis/uber/lyft and bus/trams Read less
