Fairmont Heritage Place, Ghirardelli Square

I looked at this property online several times but was hesitant about spending that much money. In the end, I’m very glad I did. It doesn’t look like much from the street but it’s a beautiful property. The bay views cannot be beat. The one thing I was disappointed about was no breakfast. When paying that much, it would be nice, but that will not… Read more

It was crazy! Spending more for a weekend than we would on a cruise. But it was a special occasion, my wife's milestone birthday. She wanted to just hang out with the family. There are 10 in the family and that's a lot of people to lodge in someplace special in the SF Bay Area. By the time I added up all the rooms we'd need it was more attractive and expedient to find either a centrally located house rental or suites somewhere. The Fairmont Ghirardelli Square had big suites (at big rates), but every bedroom had its own bathroom; and the square had just the right restaurants for our evenings...a serious consideration should the weather become nasty. Also, it meant no need to come and go, running up the pricey parking tab. We booked a two-bed two-bath suite and a 3-bed 3-bath suite (if needed, there were couch beds in each living room. The kitchen and dining area were perfect. Our kids brought food for breakfasts and lunches (enough food for twice as many people!). In the months leading up to the big weekend, we had a few email back and forths with the concierges, who were quite helpful in securing and reconfirming our restaurant reservations and the hotel management generously had a bottle of bubbly and sweets welcoming my wife's arrival. The only snafu was a mix-up on check-in where the reception staffer took some of our family to the wrong suite. There appeared to be a lack of communication from one shift to the next and written instructions were apparently not passed on to the person relieving the one we dealt with (and apparently not entered on the computer either). As I've noted, this place can stress the average person's wallet. And a full "deposit" was charged to my VISA card several days in advance of our reservation. It all worked out fine, but it's a good idea to make sure you don't have to cancel that week. Read less

I was spending Thanksgiving in SF with family that lives in the city as well as others who live across the country. This hotel met my needs as far as space requirements for 4 adults and a 14 month old for 4 nights. Considering I reserved and paid for a non-refundable, advance purchase "deal" for close to $1000 per night I feel like there was quite a bit lacking. Apparently there are services offered that we were never informed of, parking is $65 per night and the continental breakfast was exactly the same every morning. I could let that slide but the morning we were leaving I was told some employees didn't show up and there was no breakfast whatsoever. I asked for some berries or a banana as my grandaughter needed something to eat before they got to the airport for their cross country flight and I was told they couldn't get anything for me other than the milk requested. Why didn't management step in and take over? After all this is a Fairmont property who supposedly pride themselves on service. As far as the room, in general it worked just fine but you definitely see some wear and tear on some of the furniture and there were no towel hooks in the bathrooms to hang wet towels for 5 people. As I left that day I told someone at one of the lobby desks about some of my complaints and was told someone from management would reach out to me.... that was 5 days ago and I haven't heard a word. At this point I have no interest in speaking with anyone. Read less
