Fairmont Heritage Place, Ghirardelli Square

Fisherman's Wharf, San Francisco

The hotel

Imagine staying in a real-life chocolate factory. Ghirardelli Square, once home to San Francisco’s famous chocolatiers, has been reimagined into an upscale retreat. You'll find Fairmont Heritage Place right here, as well as a collection of exceptional restaurants, including a seafood eatery, American diner, and of course Ghirardelli Ice Cream & Chocolate Shop. Take in the views of San Francisco Bay and burn off some of those chocolatey treats with a stroll to Fisherman’s Wharf, Pier 39 and Golden Gate Bridge. Then return to your loft-like apartment with its original exposed bricks, to curl up in your living room, whip up dinner in your upscale kitchen, or order in supper from one of Ghirardelli Square’s restaurants.

We stayed 4 nights and loved every minute, the location is fantastic so close to the waterfront and Pier 33, walked to famous Boudin Bakery (fabulous restaurant upstairs). Downstairs in the Ghirardelli Square we indulged in Ghirardelli chocolates and desserts. There’s a great little coffee nook in the Square too. We used the hotel car to get to Pier 39 for our Alcatraz cruise and our driver was very helpful in recommending eateries. We booked the hotel bikes and rode over the Golden Gate Bridge. We had complimentary breakfast which was great with cereals, yoghurt, fruit, toast, bagels, pastries and tea, coffee or juice. The staff are very friendly and helpful. I would highly recommend this hotel and if I ever return its the only place I’d stay. Read less
Image of the Tripadvisor rating Excellent location but in general it does not feel like a 1st class Fairmont property.

You could not ask for a better location in San Francisco but as with any hotel, it's the little things that matter. You could not ask for a better location in San Francisco but as with any hotel, it's the little things that matter. Not having bottled water or any form of water other than tap available in your suite is a joke. I get the no plastic bottles movement but in two other Fairmont's I have stayed in this summer they supplied water in large glass bottles to every room. Here the only option was to buy a glass bottle of Voss for $8.00 which just does not feel like the Fairmont way. Secondly, our daughters wanted to use the well-advertised hotel vehicle to go to a beach that was 1.9 miles away (policy is they only go within two miles of the hotel which is fine). The doorman advised them the beach was actually 2.1 miles away by his calculation and told them they could not take them. It was 3:00 PM and the vehicle was sitting out front of the hotel. I happened to hear him say that and when I not so nicely suggested that they drive them to the 2.0 miles limit and they could walk from there he quickly agreed they could do that. Again I stay in at least 10 different Fairmonts a year and have for years and this is not at all what I would have expected from a Fairmont. None of these take away from the great location and restaurants nearby but are just disappointing for a Fairmont. Read less

We loved having laundry and a kitchen in our suite. The free breakfast was a perfect way to start our day as well. The staff (especially Jessica H.) were all extremely helpful and arranged rides for us multiple times. It was also fun to relax on the terrace. I'd highly recommend the Fairmont Heritage Place! We stayed her just one night before heading to Napa. Very nice accommodations. Beautiful view, albeit from a very small window. Nice wine and cheese happy hour. Not much going on in the area after dark. Tourist center in the day. But, we walked to a very nice restaurant up the hill
