Hotel Carlton

San Francisco, USA

The hotel

This neat little brick building in Lower Nob Hill hides an eclectic yet calm downtown hotel. It echoes the city’s free-spirited soul in its interior styling, its dining menu, its complimentary evening wine receptions, and its eco-conscious character. Hotel Carlton’s pale backdrop frames eye-popping global design details, with bold patterned fabrics, Nepalese temple photos, and hand-painted Moroccan tables bringing a sense of ethnic chic. And at Saha O, the hotel’s restaurant, the transcontinental vibe continues with a fusion of Yemeni, Arabic, Californian, and French influences. Inside may be global, but outside you’re unequivocally in San Francisco – right on trendy Sutter Street, it’s just 3 blocks from the cable car turnaround, 6 blocks from Union Square, and 8 blocks from Chinatown.

The hotel is located in a relatively nice quiet neighborhood. Pretty close to the marina district and Hayes Valley area and thus not expensive to move around with UBER. There is a parking facility about 200 ft away with a charge of $25 daily. The room that I stayed was towards the back of the building. In other reviews other travelers advised to stay at the back of the hotel for a quiet stay but having said that I did not observe that the area was not noisy in the first place so I figure it should not make any difference what room you"re assigned to. The room was comfortable not especially spacious and yet not cramped. Room service was excellent. There's a dining room on the ground floor that is not ruin by the hotel... the menu was surprisingly quite varied and the quality of food was good. No need to buy bottled water, There;s a water purification system on each floor for all of your needs. My only complaint is that there's no air conditioning! Unfortunately I stayed from June 7-12th 2019 when there happened to have had an unusual hot spell. Fortunately a few of the nights were cool so comfort was achieved by sleeping with the windows opened and having the ceiling fan going at full speed. So if you're thinking of going in the heat of summer you may want to reconsider your choice of hotel. Only for this reason would I not return to this hotel. Read less

I had high hopes but they were dashed when I was told at check-in that the rooms do not have A/C. This is an old and "eclectic" hotel called boutique but it felt like lipstick on a pig. There was an old ceiling fan and they offered me a box fan but it was sweltering and I woke up dripping in sweat. I heard it was unseasonably warm for SF but… Read more

I would not stay here nor recommend it unless you're on a serious budget and don't mind having no AC. Front desk staff was very nice and welcoming though. Read less

Hotel Carlton of the Joy de Vivre collection gives the impression of a once dilapidated building that someone pumped a fair amount of money into renovating...but perhaps but not quite enough. Yes, the decor is tastefully eclectic and the rooms are charming. But the lack of amenities such as air conditioning is an issue. (Though I must admit our stay was during a heat wave.) The reception team is delightful but the restaurant is, frankly, depressing. Cramped and abysmally hot with some of the worst hospitality we've ever received. Overall, this is a lovely spot for the price..but I wouldn't advise you stay in the summer! Read less

This hotel whilst on an initial welcome seemed ok, we booked a queen sized room and got a small double, on querying it we were told all the rooms were the same size, however our travelling companions had a queen sized room, the hotel was poor value for money and across San Francisco you get taxed twice, the state tax and a SF tax, which is new to… Read more

The restaurant was within the hotel but not part of it, it is expensive and you have to complete a form if you want it added to your room. Whilst the location isn’t bad, it is quite a walk to all the key attractions, if you have any mobility problems this is not a good location to stay and there were no accommodations made to help anyone with a disability. Having travelled around the World, this was nothing more than a 2/3 star Hotel. Dirty, needed a refurbishment and a decent restaurant. Too far from Front in a not very nice part of Town if you went out and turned the wrong way.
