Hotel Vertigo

San Francisco, USA

The hotel

As seen on screen in the classic Hitchcock thriller Vertigo, this hotel’s a piece of cinematic history. Rightly proud of its ‘supporting role’, you can catch the movie playing on loop in the lobby as you enjoy complimentary tea and coffee each morning, before stepping out to explore your Nob Hill neighbourhood. Just blocks from Union Square, you can amble to many San Francisco must-sees from Hotel Vertigo – although, rather aptly, you may get giddy from all the dizzying hills. Alongside essentials like your flat screen TV and complimentary WiFi, each marmalade-tinted room’s decked out with playful additions like vivid orange wingback chairs, quirky horse-head lamps, and artwork inspired by the spiralling vortexes in the film’s posters. Regardless which floor you’re on, head skywards for a mesmeric view down the hotel’s monochromatic corkscrewing staircase – if you’ve got a head for heights.

Just came back from an 8 night stay and Hotel Vertigo. We really enjoyed staying at this hotel, staff was friendly and helpful, the location was central and interesting - close toe Union Square, Chinatown and if you are ambitious you can even walk to Fisherman's Wharf. Any shortcomings the hotel may have, you can chalk up to the age of the building and added personality. If you want a perfectly quiet and uptight hotel pay the extra big bucks and go to a building with no style. Read less

Older hotel with excellent service. Staff was so very friendly and helpful. Loved the good linens soft towels too! Location in Nob Hill was perfect. Shout out to Cristina who hooked me up with a great nail salon. Market, food places and a bar down the street. Would definitely stay here again.

I had arrived via an evening flight from Las Vegas for a five days trip here in the Golden City AKA San Francisco. So I had decided to book a stay at this boutique property, Hotel Vertigo, upon researching that it is centrally located in the city. I took a shared Lyft ride which costs USD24 from the San Francisco International Airport. Upon arrival, I was accommodated in the Vertigo Deluxe Queen (Room No. 318). The room size is adequate at 24 square metres and I felt comfortable with my stay here. The room provided a tranquil and restful environment during my stay here. There is a window and although it faces a backyard, it was acceptable given that I was always out the entire day exploring the wonderful sights of San Francisco. Hotel Vertigo is tastefully designed in baroque-modern style, which exudes a sense of eccentricity, style and playfulness. Checking into Hotel Vertigo is like stepping into a Hitchcock movie. Back then, this hotel was known as The Empire Hotel, whereby it played a cameo role in Alfred Hitchcock’s 1958 classic movie, ‘Vertigo’. Hitchcock liked the winding stairway in the hotel that it became the design inspiration for the famous wooden stairs inside the church featured in the movie. The stairs in the hotel are still the same way today and I would suggest checking it out during your stay here. I was impressed with the room which had been immaculately cleaned on a daily basis. Even the wardrobe mirror is cleaned perfectly without any visible stains or prints. The only thing I observed is that the bathroom ventilation could see a bit of regular cleaning with the removal of dust on its cover. Room amenities such as coffee, tea and electric kettle are provided for the guest’s enjoyment. However, bottled water is chargeable at USD2 per bottle. For entertainment, I was able to enjoy a wide variety of Cable TV Channels such as CBS News, Cinemax, CNBC, CNN, Discovery, Disney, ESPN, Fox News, HBOF, HBOW, History, MSNBC, NBC, TNT and Travel Channel. Knowing that the travellers today are mostly Millennials who possess a wide variety of mobile devices and gadgets, the hotel had made a conscious effort with the provision of abundant power sockets in the room for one’s charging and power needs. Among my hotel stays in the many overseas countries, I would say this hotel hits the right note when it comes to understanding the guest needs. The bathroom is beautifully designed and most important of all, the shower works well with the right water pressure and temperature when set to its desired setting. For travellers who are here on a leisure visit, these are the distances from the hotel to the various places of interests: 1) Union Square (Shopping) - 850m 2) Chinatown - 1.4km 3) Japantown - 1.4km 4) Lombard Street (Crookedest Street) - 1.7km 5) Fisherman’s Wharf - 2.5km 6) Coit Tower - 2.5km 7) Painted Ladies - 2.8km 8) PIER 39 - 3km 9) Golden Gate Bridge - 7.4km Hotel Vertigo sits on Sutter Street, which connects conveniently to Powell Street, whereby the cable car operates on these two lines, Powell/ Hyde and Powell/ Mason. Both lines travel to the nearby Chinatown and Union Square, with the former also passing by Lombard Street and the latter also travelling to the Fisherman’s Wharf. On the other hand, I didn’t get the chance to ride the BART AKA Bay Area Rapid Transit (Subway) as I was mostly walking and taking the cable car around the city. There are convenience stores and eateries situated nearby the hotel. If you need to purchase groceries and the basic necessities, there is a convenience store called Sutter Fine Foods situated just a stone’s throw away (54m). It is opened daily from 7am to 2am. When it comes to dining, you can find several eateries all located within 100m from the hotel. I would highly recommend a stay at Hotel Vertigo for its great location and its white and orange theme rooms that offer a unique and charming touch. A stay at this hotel would leave you with a memorable experience in this Golden City. If you find my review helpful in the research and selection of your hotel stay, please give me a “Thumbs Up”! Thank you. Read less

Comfortable second floor room looking out onto Sutter Street. Clean, well appointed, convenient for tourists - cable car and chinese quarter about 10 minutes walk. Excellent Cosy Cafe opposite served very reasonably priced breakfast. What's not to like about Hotel Vertigo - apart from the sinister name!
