Kimpton Buchanan Hotel

San Francisco, USA

The hotel

A self-confessed ‘sultry diva of a hotel', Kimpton Buchanan Hotel sits where three of San Francisco’s most dynamic neighbourhoods meet. In one direction you’ve got Japantown’s ramen shops and spas, in another Pacific Heights’ chic boutiques and gourmet restaurants, and in another The Fillmore’s cool jazz and burgeoning dining scenes. And The Buchanan certainly keeps up with The Joneses, with Zen-inspired touches in sleek modern guestrooms, trendy design features like vintage whiskey bottle chandeliers, indulgent free wine and sake receptions, and Japanese flavours at ‘Mums’, where American breakfasts are followed by all-you-can-eat Shabu Shabu. Before heading out to explore, there’s morning tea and coffee in the lounge and, if the hills of San Francisco aren’t enough, there’s a free 24-hour fitness room when you return.

Very much enjoyed our stay here. It's a beautiful hotel with wonderful decor. The hotel is conveniently located next to many delicious Japanese eateries and shops, and within short walking distance to lots of shopping on Fillmore. The location was ideal for us. There is a self-guided walking tour of Japantown to learn about its history. The service from the reception staff was phenomenal. I've stayed at many 4-5 star hotels around the world, and the service at this Kimpton was among the best. The staff is genuinely welcoming, helpful, and really go the extra mile to make your stay easy and comfortable. They had a treasure chest of toys, which was a great touch for those traveling with toddlers. The room and bathroom were good sizes, with many amenities. If I'm being picky, there was cigarette smoke smell coming from the bathroom vent, which was unpleasant. Enjoyed their Happy Hour with a delicious selection of sake/wine/cocktail - the server is lots of fun. The courtyard was a peaceful place to kill some time after check out and before going to the airport (lounger chairs, bean bag toss, giant Jenga). I would come back to this hotel again next time we come to San Francisco. Read less

nothing negative to tell about this hotel. It is relatively expensive, but the quality level is really to the top. Avoid using the parking fro your car (40$ a day), you can try street parking for nothing at one or two blocks from the hotel. the room was looking brand new, it was clear (white walls), a big window with a sitting place, it was… Read more

The hotel is located in central, but calm Japantown, which was absolutely perfect for our trip. Service and cleanliness were great. Overall a good stay, good value. Can definitely recommend to anyone who want to live centrally, but quietly.

Our new fav hotel in SF! It's the perfect central location for walking to everything that SF has to offer. Spacious rooms, awesome bathrooms. Love that coffee in the lobby every morning. Friendly service. We'll be back for sure!

Initially I thought the room was a bit sparse to start with but it was actually really big and had everything we needed. Complimentary coffee in the lobby was a really nice touch. Parking was a bit of a rip off considering you can park in Japan town for $29 vs $40+tax in the hotel. Would certainly stay again for the food and the local shops alone. Read less
