Tiki bar in the basement is a must (be sure to reserve your spot early). Proximity to restaurants and all the city has to offer just make this a spectacular hotel. Service was five star. Read less

This is a great hotel in a fantastic location. We had a really high floor so had a phenomenal view of the city. The building is beautiful and there is such a fun Tiki Bar in the Basement. I used the gym which was well equipped and spotless! Hope to stay here again!

Elegant - Beautiful - Comfortable In May, we stayed at the lovely Fairmont San Francisco, perched atop Nob Hill, for the second time. We were in San Francisco for business meetings for my wife.. Flying in from Phoenix, we arrived early afternoon, and checked in - our room was ready. We were assigned Room 1006, where previously, we had stayed in Room 1405, and enjoyed our stay. The Fairmont San Francisco is located 950 Mason St, and it “overlooks” the City of San Francisco, and down toward Union Square. It is an wonderfully elegant building, and architecturally interesting, both inside and out, and harkens to a more glorious time for travel. “Opulent” is the first word, which comes to my mind. While it is an historic inn, it has been refurbished, and modernized in many ways, so while basically older, it does not lack for the accouterments that one expects from a luxury hotel nowadays. One of those accouterments is the in-room tablet, which control several functions in the room, and also acts as a “personal concierge” service for the hotel, and near-by dining and entertainment. We had arrived a bit early for my wife’s meetings, so she got to explore this grand hotel with me. I almost felt like a tour guide, but then was exploring so much, myself. There is something to see on almost every floor, and around every corner. Historical photographs and displays line many of the hallways.. Our room 1006 had an entrance foyer, a very comfortable King bed, with nice pillows (an issue for me, at so many hotels), a nice bathroom w/ walk-in shower (ideal for my wife, with two artificial hips) and a soaking tub, but only a single sink, with small horizontal flat space around it. There was a desk, and chest-of-drawers, with a large, flat-screen TV. The décor was “turn of the previous century elegant,” but the furniture was much, much newer, and in great shape. While not the most spacious room we have had, it was more than adequate, and would have comfortable for a much longer stay. Our view was nice, but mostly of the tower section of the Fairmont. The closet and drawers were ample for all of our clothing. We had a safe, iron and ironing board, and a full compliment of Rose 31 amenities in the bathroom. This is the standard Fairmont line of bath amenities, and we find them very nice. There was a hair dryer in the bathroom, as well. We had plenty of AC outlets, and most were near horizontal surfaces, so plugging in a handful of devices, for charging, was easy. We greatly appreciate such, as we have many devices, and my wife uses most of hers all day in meetings - they need a good charging. Room 1006 was very quiet (as was the entire property), and we heard zero noise from either the outside (even with the California Cable Car Line beside the building), or inside the hotel. The air conditioning system was very quiet too. During our stay, we had the opportunity to dine at the Laurel Court Restaurant for breakfast, just off the lobby, and then my wife and I had drinks in their bar area. The Fairmont San Francisco is located atop Nob Hill, and while it IS a hill, there is proximity to so very much. Just be aware that it is perched higher than most of the surrounding area. What looks like a short walk, on a map, does involve stairs, or steep streets – some VERY steep. That has benefits, but also some possible logistical issues. We like the location, due to it being much quieter, than some other locations in San Francisco, plus it can offer stunning views of the City, the Bay, and surrounding buildings. However, if one is walking a lot, it IS on a rather steep hill. I find that approaching from the south, and taking the steps up from Stockton, at the tunnel, to Bush St, is easier, than an approach from east, or west. Also, the California St Cable Car line is beside the hotel, with a stop, right beside the building. While not as famous as the Powell St Line, the California St Line is always less crowded, and can actually be used for transportation, where the Powell St Line is more of a “tourist attraction.” On this stay, we did not use any transportation to/from the hotel, beyond our driver taking us from/to SFO for flights, and then a taxi for my wife, to her meetings. My wife had no issues getting a taxi each morning, and on the second day, the doorman asked if she was going to her office on Berry St. She was, and he had a taxi in moments - nice touch. Every member of the staff was delightful, and helpful. When checking out, we made reservations to stay later in the Summer. Read less

San Francisco is our last stop before heading home. We never tire of this City by the Bay. On this trip, we decided to stay at The Fairmont Hotel and booked our reservations through the American Express Fine Resorts and Hotels service which comes with our American Express Platinum membership. The great thing about staying on Nob Hill is that it's centralized to all the various means of transportation and sights. We took the cable car most of the time to all our destinations. Outside of that we took Uber. This hotel is such a classic mainstay for San Francisco. It still carried on many of the traditions and historic nuances yet, the updates were definitely there in technology and logistics but it remained subtle without disturbing the charm of this great classic. Our room was enormous! When you walk in, immediately to your right is a large walk-in closet. I have never seen a walk-in closet in a hotel (of course unless you stay in a high-end suite). Then right in front of us were two king-sized beds with a lot of space between the foot of the bed and the refreshment hutch and desk. This refreshment hutch was filled with a variety of snacks and beverages, however, as with most hotel amenities, there is a charge for removing the item. Behind that wall was a large bathroom with tub and shower. We were greeted with a complimentary large glass bottle of Evian water, a charming box of chocolate covered salted caramels and a welcome note from The Fairmont Hotel. Throughout our stay the staff were courteous, friendly and very professional. Every morning, we enjoyed the full breakfast buffet which came with our reservation. It was a very nice selection including a made-to-order omelet station. In the evenings, we would either enjoy a glass of wine or beer and have a light snack for the evening while a pianist provided live dinner music. The Fairmont Hotel provided us with a very pleasant and memorable stay for the three remaining days in the city. Read less
