Hotel Vertigo

Nob Hill, San Francisco

The hotel

As seen on screen in the classic Hitchcock thriller Vertigo, this hotel’s a piece of cinematic history. Rightly proud of its ‘supporting role’, you can catch the movie playing on loop in the lobby as you enjoy complimentary tea and coffee each morning, before stepping out to explore your Nob Hill neighbourhood. Just blocks from Union Square, you can amble to many San Francisco must-sees from Hotel Vertigo – although, rather aptly, you may get giddy from all the dizzying hills. Alongside essentials like your flat screen TV and complimentary WiFi, each marmalade-tinted room’s decked out with playful additions like vivid orange wingback chairs, quirky horse-head lamps, and artwork inspired by the spiralling vortexes in the film’s posters. Regardless which floor you’re on, head skywards for a mesmeric view down the hotel’s monochromatic corkscrewing staircase – if you’ve got a head for heights.

We have just returned from a 3 night stay as part of a tour of California we arrived late at night in the dark so you don't really get a take of the hotel or area at that point. I have to say it's by no means the plushest or poshest hotel and the area around the hotel is quite dirty with lots of rubbish piled on the edges of the pavement, having said that the hotel staff cannot do enough to help, the rooms are very clean and comfortable ( ours was a big room and very quiet) and the location is brilliant for exploring the city just a few blocks from Union Square. If it was my hotel I would invest in a Gin Bar in the massive Foyer space which would be great for the guests and very lucrative for the hotel. Read less

Cafes, bars, restaurants, convenience stores all nearby. But most attractions and sightseeing are done from Fisherman’s Wharf so using public transport is a must as San Francisco is hilly !!! Great if you don’t mind walking but can be very tiring. Hotel was great for what we required which was a quiet, clean, comfortable room for our stay. Great… Read more

I chose this hotel mainly because it was located right where I needed it to be for a recent business trip. Really glad I did. Excellent, friendly staff - from housekeeping to front desk. Would be a good place to use as a home base for touring the city as well. Several nearby parking garages (I recommend the one on Mason), and excellent places to eat - real authentic Indian, Thai, Yemeni, Italian, etc. - within just a couple blocks. Looking forward to returning someday. Read less

Warm, friendly staff who were more than happy to help a couple of clueless Brits on their first stay in San Francisco. Clean and welcoming rooms and the lobby was gorgeous! Would recommend to anyone visiting the city!
