Kimpton Sir Francis Drake Hotel

Union Square, San Francisco

The hotel

You’ll know you’re somewhere special from the minute you arrive at the Kimpton Sir Francis Drake Hotel. A brightly attired Beefeater will greet you as you walk into the lobby, with its antique chandeliers, gilded ceilings and grand staircase. This feast for your eyes continues throughout the hotel, with artwork on the walls and jewel-toned fabrics. Be sure to drop in to Bar Drake with its trendy speakeasy style, and Lizzie's Starlight on the 21st floor, drenched in 1930s glamour. And, when you’re hungry, head to Scala’s for some rustic Italian food. It’s like a classic Parisian bistro, with elaborate ceilings and rich floor tiles — no wonder it’s popular with the locals as well.

Unfortunately, this stay was tinged with knowing our cruise to Hawaii on the Grand Princess had been cancelled the night before while we were still in Las Vegas! Having said that, the staff were wonderful. We were going to celebrate our Ruby Wedding on the cruise. They upgraded our room and sent us a bottle of Prosecco, fruit, cheese and toast. A lovely and much appreciated gesture. The room was not huge but was fine. We had a bath with showers over. This was fine. Toiletries provided. The bed was very comfortable. From 17.00 to 18.00 there was free wine and small pizza bites in the main foyer. The staff were very helpful and friendly. The only down side was La Scalia for breakfast. Very expensive for what as served. Read less

On further enquiry at the reception we were told that, these charges are for the WIFI which we had used in the hotel. We told the concern person that we were not informed about it prior and it is incorrect to charge without letting the customer know about it prior. I will not recommend anyone to visit this hotel where the hotel staff cheat with customers. Read less

I love boutique Kimpton hotels generally, and this one met my expectations -- a renovated historic, quirky property. It's not a modern Hilton, so don't expect large bathrooms. Expect a friendly staff and a warm feeling. It's also only a 5 minute walk up Powell St from the BART station, so it's easy to get to. My only complaint was that the rooms… Read more

Expect a friendly staff and a warm feeling. It's also only a 5 minute walk up Powell St from the BART station, so it's easy to get to. My only complaint was that the rooms are bit small (more like European standards than US), the wif-fi was awful, and they stuck a $28 "guest amenity fee" on my bill which is basically fraud. I realize everyone does it so the online price looks low, but I wish they would be honest about the final bill up front. I would have stayed there anyway. Another bonus is Lori's Diner across the street, an amazing place with great and affordable food (affordable by San Francisco standards anyway). No obvious parking, but you don't want to bring a car into SF anyway. Read less

In particular the concierge Mr. Lief Abram was excellent, he recommended places to go for food, amenities etc. he also he booked a boat trip round the bay for us which we thoroughly enjoyed, his overall persona was excellent, he could not do enough for us and made our stay very enjoyable, he made us feel very welcome in San Francisco and without him our stay would not have been so enjoyable.
