Kimpton Sir Francis Drake Hotel

Union Square, San Francisco

The hotel

You’ll know you’re somewhere special from the minute you arrive at the Kimpton Sir Francis Drake Hotel. A brightly attired Beefeater will greet you at the door before ushering you into the magnificently restored lobby with antique crystal chandeliers, gilded ceilings and a grand, sweeping staircase. And it’s not just a case of style over substance at the Sir Francis Drake, it truly is remarkable in every way, from the high standard of service from friendly staff to the fashionable Scala’s Bistro, so beloved of local’s and guests alike. Guest rooms are sumptuous with art work on the walls and jewel-toned fabrics. They also come well-equipped with all mod cons to ensure you feel at home straightaway. For the health conscious, there’s a fitness centre and in-room spa treatments can be customised to suit your needs. For Italian and French inspired cuisine, look no further than Scala’s, just adjacent to the hotel and a feast for the eyes as well as the stomach with elaborately painted ceilings and richly coloured floor tiles. Reminiscent of a classic Parisian bistro, it’s a wonderful place to while away an evening or two. Also unmissable is Bar Drake with its speakeasy-hued stylishness and The Starlight Room, saturated in 1930s glamour and open until the early hours.

Well our stay started bad as we arrived. We were at the reception and when it came to putthe usual deposit for the room, their credit card readers were having a proble. As the line up behind us grew, the reception had us try 7 times to take the deposit, even saying our card was at fault, used different cards told try another one. When the other lines had the same issue then they took the deposits manually. Felt like they made us look like people with credit isssues in front of at least 6 other guess. The rooms are comfortable, but very small. The bathroom is again very small. The rroms are so small, there are no fridge, no coffee makers etc. The snacks and bottles of booze ( which we never take ) are shoved into a drawer because of lack of size and space. Read less

Into group sex? How about Domesic Violence? If so, Kimpton Sir Francis Drake Hotel is the place for you! I am not a prude....and it takes alot to upset me... However, I just spent a horrible night at Kimpton Hotels & Restaurants. I complained to the parent company, IHG Corporate, Kimpton Sir Francis Drake Hotel and Kimpton Hotels & Restaurants upon my return to San Diego to request a refund of my payment... I have not heard a peep from them! Read the message I sent them below..... Terrible customer service! Begin Message: I am writing this email to you because I have not heard back from management of the Sir Francis Drake Hotel as promised by the Kimpton Corporate office representative during a conversation I had with them first thing Monday, May 13, 2019. Please process a refund of my entire night stay. It was a horrific night, during which the people in room 1023 (we were in room 1024) had at least an hour of violent group sex and after, screaming obscenities at the top of their lungs, threw each other around the room, and crashed into our shared wall. We were frightened not only for us, but the safety of your guests. I didn't know if a bullet was going to come through the wall... I tried the use the phone in the room, but it was not in working order... The violence and arguments, evidenced by the loudness of their voices and sounds of banging on the walls, and the crashing of the TV breaking, spurred me to run to the elevator in my nightgown and bare feet to find security in the lobby. Security accompanied me to the 10th floor. We witnessed a man in the hallway holding onto the door handle, trying to keep a woman (he claims was his wife) in the room and not let her out. Security escorted the man down the hallway. I am not sure what happened after that..... I do know what was supposed to be a special mother's day visit in the City with my daughter, turned into a nightmare. End Message Read less

The rooms are cramped, old fashioned and lack things like a general light switch at the bed side. I also was annoyed by a constant and very loud dripping from condense in the bathroom ceiling. When mentioned to front desk, they say it is normal and can’t do anything about it. Strange, I never experienced this in 20 years travel so far. On the staff at the front desk a positive note though, they are friendly as one can expect. The staff of next door Scala restaurant (that serves the hotel for breakfast as well) is for the majority unfriendly and appear to dislike their job. Adding to it all are the very high rates, which makes this hotel one to avoid in my opinion. Read less

Though this is a great and fantastic hotel, we were most disappointed that the ‘free and complimentary’ wifi and wine was charged as a guest amenity fee of $30/day. We were not told of this until checkout, which was deducted from our held credit card.

This hotel looks so grand in the public rooms. so disappointed. First room on 10th floor had 2 cracked windows which appeared to be mended with sticking tape. On complaint, we were moved to the 6th floor where we only had the one crack! Confusion then reigned over the key card and we had three attempts to get back into our room after going out.… Read more

On complaint, we were moved to the 6th floor where we only had the one crack! Confusion then reigned over the key card and we had three attempts to get back into our room after going out. Bedroom small, bathroom tiny, poor shower. The complimentary coffee they boast of, is a small paper cup serve yourself from a jug. The bar was cold, toilets in public areas were few and locked - we were only given wifi code on request - this should just be available, and similar with the toilet code. Money has been spent on fancy mirrors and decor rather than windows and bathroom fittings. Read less
