Kimpton Sir Francis Drake Hotel

Union Square, San Francisco

The hotel

You’ll know you’re somewhere special from the minute you arrive at the Kimpton Sir Francis Drake Hotel. A brightly attired Beefeater will greet you at the door before ushering you into the magnificently restored lobby, with antique crystal chandeliers, gilded ceilings and a grand, sweeping staircase. Guest rooms are sumptuous with artwork on the walls and jewel-toned fabrics. They also come well-equipped to ensure you feel at home straightaway. And it’s not just a case of style over substance at the Sir Francis Drake, it truly is remarkable in every way, from the high standard of service to the fashionable Scala’s Bistro, so beloved of local’s and guests alike. Adjacent to the hotel, Scala’s serves Italian and French inspired cuisine and is a feast for the eyes as well as the stomach, with elaborately painted ceilings and richly coloured floor tiles. Reminiscent of a classic Parisian bistro, it’s a wonderful place to while away an evening or two. Also unmissable is Bar Drake with its speakeasy-hued stylishness and The Starlight Room, saturated in 1930s glamour and open until the early hours.

My sis and I just spent 2 nights in one of their larger double queen rooms. We switched to a higher floor because in our first room we were level with a rooftop of vents. There was no problem accommodating us. Except for the lady who checked us out, the staff was wonderful and the service was great. I would absolutely give the SFD a B+, A-. The only things that bugged us were when we ordered room service, they don't bring a table so you're eating on your bed while one person eats from a desk. So forget the intimate dinners. Also, they add an automatic gratuity of 20% to the bill which is fine if you're aware of it, otherwise, you're over-tipping. All in all, it was great! Read less

I stayed at the Drake for 4 days during a conference. Room was neat and clean, service was friendly and helpful. Breakfast at Scalas Bistro was very good but expensive - and no better than the diner across the street. The only negative were the slow elevators that can’t keep up with the traffic and the stairs are a steep alternative. The Starlight… Read more

The hotel has been meticulously restored to its days of grandeur. The staff was incredibly helpful at every step from front door to housekeeping. The rooms were small but a great value. It’s my new go to place in SF.

Please be aware that IHG (the rewards group for this hotel) will not honour any guarantees made in your reservation. It is deeply troubling to have all your arrangements prepared, confirmed and guaranteed only to arrive and be scorned for explaining there had been confusion on written guarantees made on your reservation. Customer Service has been equally frustrating. I've spent more than two hours on the phone with all levels of managers. With each level came less remorse, less accountability and less hospitality. I urge you not to stay at this hotel and even more so not to align yourself with IHG and their family of hotels. Besides their colossal mistake this hotel was terrible. You can hear everything, the bathrooms are dirty, small, and uncomfortable. There are much betters hotels with great rewards who appreciate hospitality. Stay somewhere better, you deserve it. Image of the Tripadvisor rating Excellent Veneu with excellent staff!

Jan 7, 2020 RuRuGB2351 San Francisco, California

Excellent Venue with excellent staff! We had a company holiday party at their one of their private rooms. The venue and staff are excellent! However the catering food quality was not good at all. Too expensive for the food that we got. Bland, overcooked, did not taste fresh. lacking of any flavor, some tasted like rubber.
