Kimpton Sir Francis Drake Hotel

Union Square, San Francisco

The hotel

You’ll know you’re somewhere special from the minute you arrive at the Kimpton Sir Francis Drake Hotel. A brightly attired Beefeater will greet you at the door before ushering you into the magnificently restored lobby, with antique crystal chandeliers, gilded ceilings and a grand, sweeping staircase. Guest rooms are sumptuous with artwork on the walls and jewel-toned fabrics. They also come well-equipped to ensure you feel at home straightaway. And it’s not just a case of style over substance at the Sir Francis Drake, it truly is remarkable in every way, from the high standard of service to the fashionable Scala’s Bistro, so beloved of local’s and guests alike. Adjacent to the hotel, Scala’s serves Italian and French inspired cuisine and is a feast for the eyes as well as the stomach, with elaborately painted ceilings and richly coloured floor tiles. Reminiscent of a classic Parisian bistro, it’s a wonderful place to while away an evening or two. Also unmissable is Bar Drake with its speakeasy-hued stylishness and The Starlight Room, saturated in 1930s glamour and open until the early hours.

A boutique style hotel taking you back to the 1920’s with a Beefeater waiting to greet you. Located close to Union Square it was the perfect location for our site seeing plans. Cable cars and subway easily accessible and nearby. Hop on hop off bus stop at Union Square too. Elegant lobby and bar area with gorgeous architecture, chandeliers, and very helpful staff. Lobby furniture did seem a little ‘tired’ though. Pet friendly hotel with sign at registration greeting the furry guests. We had a small king corner room that was modern in decor, but had a walk-in closet that felt larger than the bathroom. The bathroom was updated, but extremely small. Sink had no counter space, but did have small storage area under the sink. When you walk into the bathroom you literally have about 2ft and then you hit the tub. The bathroom was one of the smallest hotel bathrooms I have even seen especially for the price of the rooms. Not a fan of the shampoo, conditioner, and bath gel in pump bottles attached to the wall either. The beds and pillows were comfortable and the room was dark for sleeping. Unfortunately our room had an unpleasant odor and we asked to move, but no rooms were available until the following day. We spent most of the day out site seeing and only there for two nights so we decided not to move the following day. However, every time we walked into the room we were greeted with the smell of ‘light’ sewage. Never did figure out where the smell was coming from. Starlight Room was under construction so unfortunately we didn’t get a chance to have a drink and see the views. Overall the location is prime, but I expected more from the Kimpton brand. Read less

Good facilities [in room and bar!] and great location, perfect for a business trip [walkable to Salesforce Tower, but also to the pier / restrautants]. Friendly staff with an evident sense of humour, which was nice....

Two queen beds which is nice for a family rather than the double/double that seems to the be more standard option. What we lacked in a view was more than made up for with comfortable beds/bedding a clean room and a nice bathroom/shower. I think the 3.5 rating is low if your expectations are high. It's an affordable option and great for a first time visitor to the city that wants easy access to the city. Read less

There are traditional porters at the entrance dressed in period uniform. The hotel is large with an attached restaurant. Rooms are clean and maintained by maids. There are no coffee makers in the rooms but there is a fridge with minibar. But if you dont mind a very short walk there are many places just outside to get drinks and food. There is a free mini breakfast in the restaurant in the morning for tea coffee bun. There is a valet parking for your car at $70 per night a very good service. Read less
