Seattle, Seattle & Washington State

The hotel

Bang on trend, downtown’s Motif Seattle isn’t just well-located, it’s also well-kitted out. We’re talking Amazon Alexa in your sleek and chic guestroom (just in case you want to ask for fresh towels or check out what’s happening in Seattle tomorrow). We’re talking travel musts, like a 24-hour fitness hub. And we’re talking uber-cool social spaces, like the popular rooftop deck — an urban patio that’s been strung with lights and features al fresco fireplaces, city views, and the Northwest Pacific menu of its fashionable Frolik Kitchen + Cocktails. All this within walking distance of favourites like Pike Place Market and the Pacific Place Mall.

ATTENTION ALL BLACK TRAVELERS: First and foremost, I really hesitated about writing this review, but I think I should alert my black travelers. I am not one to make everything about race but somethings are very obvious and can't be dismissed. ------------- I am an African American woman who was very excited to travel to Seattle for the first time with my friend, who is an African American male. We were ready to experience the culture, the food, and anything else that Seattle had to offer. Regarding our hotel accommodations, we decided to stay at the Motif. Upon checking in, we were greeted and welcomed warmly by Malcolm. He suggested different places where we should eat, including the hotels very own restaurant, The Frolik Kitchen. Before I go any further, I'd like to say that the reason why we decided to stay at the Motif was because of the ambiance and the vibe of the restaurant (according to the reviews and pictures). Unfortunately, our experience at the Motif was way below average - especially how were treated at the restaurant. On September 20th, we decided to eat at the Frolic Kitchen because we were tired from exploring and didn't want to go too far. While my friend went to the restroom, I walked into the restaurant to be seated. As I waited for someone to assist, I noticed that some of the staff gave me eye contact but did not approach me. After about 5 minutes of waiting, the host came up to me to say that they were at capacity and they were not allowing more people to be seated. I was surprised by this because there were not alot of people in the restaurant at 7:30 PM. Normally, if a restaurant is at capacity, and they are not about to close, your name goes on a waiting list and you are notified once a table is available. This option was not offered to us even though the restaurant closed at 10:00 pm, we were turned away and was told we can order something to eat from their restaurant from our room. As we were walking away, the feelom of frustration and hurt really set in. I began to feel like we were racially profiled and turned away unfairly. Not to mention, as we were walking away, we noticed a group with 6 people that were leaving the restaurant. Of course my friend and I both noticed this and questioned why we were not allowed in after that group left - they were no longer at capacity, right? Once I got back into the room, I immediately called down to the front desk to explain my experience at the restaurant. Needless to say, she made two excuses for why we were treated poorly - which none of them made sense. Not to mention, she said she would deduct the hotel resort fee for our troubles. I thanked her for this gesture, but I never asked for any compensation - I'm assuming this was her was of calming me down or silencing me. I really hate that this was our experience at the Motif's restaurant, The Frolik Kitchen, but it is what it is. I highly urge black travelers to not support this establishment. They are not for us.Show Read less

Everyone was so friendly and helpful. The cleaning procedures were explained and room was very clean. Restaurant and bar with patio were just downstairs from the front entrance. Walked all over downtown from the location.

I stayed while the restrictions were in effect due to Covid 19 and the whole staff was warm and welcoming. I especially wanted to see the Frolik restaurant and even though it was closed on the day I stayed (due to Covid 19) a couple of staff members let me view outdoor terrace of the restaurant to see what it was like. It was a nice getaway

The rooftop bar has a nice atmosphere, but the menu is very limited and pricey, the drinks were just ok. We stayed on the 17th floor and had a beautiful view of the water. This hotel is about a 10 minute walk to Pike Market and a 20-25 minute walk to Space Needle. Shopping and theaters are in walking distance. There were alot of homeless people about a block over but they are harmless and didn't bother anyone. Read less
