Belmond Charleston Place

Charleston, South Carolina

The hotel

Seamlessly blending gentility and old-world charm with cutting edge amenities, Belmond Charleston Place is widely regarded as one of Charleston’s finest accommodations. The jewel in the crown has got to be the horizon-edge swimming pool with retractable sunroof, a delightful place to catch a few rays and cool off in sparkling waters; it has a very relaxed ambience. Striking ‘porthole’ windows overlook historic King Street, and the Jacuzzi will ease muscles aching from too much sightseeing! Others may disagree with us and consider the Spa the finest place to be – certainly it’s very indulgent, offering a range of incredible treatments from Deep Tissue Massage to the deliciously satisfying body scrubs and all-natural facials. And then there’s the award-winning bars and restaurants. At the Charleston Grill, world-class jazz music meets mouth-watering cuisine with dishes divided into four categories – Social & Shared, Roots & Stems, Waves & Marsh, and Field & Pasture. Choose from savory seasonal seafood dishes or the signature Charleston Grill Crabcakes. If you’d rather dine al fresco, opt for The Palmetto Café, combining the very best of American Lowcountry cuisine with the freshest of ingredients. For tapas and cocktails, we recommend the Thoroughbred Club.

We flew to Charleston for our Babymoon and booked this hotel based on these TA reviews through Amex’s Fine Hotels and Resorts program. I had requested a king size bed, but none were available upon check in so I spent this precious vacation sleeping alone (and poorly) in an uncomfortable double bed. As mentioned in other reviews, both of the double beds in our room were old and squeaked with any slight movement throughout the night. As a pregnant person, I just wanted a comfy, quiet sleep with my partner. I was very disappointed and wish I had read (and trusted) more reviews about the beds. One of our beds had a friendly spider in it upon arrival. It’s that time in the south, so I get bugs seeking refuge, but just another unfortunate issue. Check in was a madhouse (too many guests for number of registration desk staff, no line organization, very little greeting) and it reminded me of giant conference hotels absent any character, warm southern greeting and complete with an unapologetic trainee checking us in. I wouldn’t say this is the worst hotel experience I’ve ever had, but based on the TripAdvisor stars and reviews (and the cost of the room), I really was expecting at least a level of decent customer service. Nothing about this hotel experience felt special. From the wait every morning to get a table for breakfast, to the missed room cleaning and turndown services, to the $95 pedicure that left one of my toes bleeding, I cannot imagine recommending this hotel to any friends, family, or work colleagues. I’m not a fan of complaining online, but I’m hoping others don’t make the same mistake we did on a once-in-a-lifetime babymoon. That being said, if you are coming in for a night by yourself and need a room in a conveniently downtown location, this could be a fit. We ended up coming down a day early and spent one evening at the Spectator. Highly recommend that property for their service, friendliness and accommodations. I had contacted the Belmond sales team via email to try and extend our stay, also asking for some recommendations for spa and food but only heard back about room availability at a rate much higher than expected with no additional follow up or up sell. As an aside, I’d also recommend Delaney Oyster House, Chubby Fish, and Malagon for dinner — we had outstanding meals at the bars of each of these establishments and would recommend to foodie friends (or just hungry ones!) who like small, local places that are a bit off the main drag! We’ve stayed in hotels globally and this hotel was not my favorite. They forgot our welcome gift, they told us they were too busy to bring our room service, and overall made us feel in the way. I’ve been to Holiday Inns that were nicer. Read less

First time in Charleston. We booked the Belmond due to it's location in Downtown. We were also told to stay there by our friends that frequent Charleston. It's close to everything and makes life easy if you want to explore Downtown Charleston. Everything was within a short uber or within walking distance. The main row of shopping was right outside their doors and most of the restaurants, marketplace and harbor were a short walk away. The room was clean and comfortable, and the staff was great. Definitely recommend. We did find a better rate through our airline than we did online so make sure you check that out if you're flying in. Read less

We booked our stay through TripAdvisor for an upgraded room with a balcony. Upon checkin we were told that room wasn't available and there was no upgrade available and there was nothing they could do for us. No apology. I asked again to make sure i understood this correctly, as this was a pretty messed up way to accomodate your guest on their part. Again-no refund, no upgrade, no apology. I asked for a manager and a lady came out and I expressed my frustrations to her in a fairly direct manner saying this is not what you would expect from a world class hospitality venue like Belmond. She offered to move us to the balcony room that we had originally booked for the second night and gave us a house credit for $200. But with no apology still. We did think it was an acceptable compromise and moved in. We went out to have dinner and upon our return we had found chocolate covered strawberries and a card in our room-problem was it was meant for someone else! I called the froon desk and they sent someone to grab the card. Embarrasing. The next day we asked to book a private walking tour with a guide through the concierge desk and were paired up with a guide. He was drunk and confused. Here is how the tour went: "and here is the Washington square. In the middle there is a statue of Washington. He used to visit Charleston. Let's walk that way." We paid $180 for a two-hour tour and learned absolutely nothing about Charleston other than the fact it was founded in 1670, which our guide mentioned at least three times. We submitted this feedback to the concierge upon our return and they were apologetic and asked where we were staying. We didn't ask for a refund since we paid directly to the guide so it wasn't Belmond's responsibility to reimburse us, but a bad recommendation is a bad recommendation. A flower arrangement, or a botttle of wine to our room would have been a nice gesture. The hotel is beautiful, the atmosphere is nice, and the location is superb. But when you think about what you normaly get in a 5-star hotel, Belmond in Charleston came up short for us. Read less

If you’re going to Charleston, this is the place to stay. Let me give you just three reasons: location, location, location. And by the way service is excellent and they have the very best restaurant in town. It’s very hard to leave the hotel because everything is so good.
