Belmond Charleston Place

Charleston, South Carolina

The hotel

Seamlessly blending gentility and old-world charm with cutting edge amenities, Belmond Charleston Place is widely regarded as one of Charleston’s finest accommodations. The jewel in the crown has got to be the horizon-edge swimming pool with retractable sunroof, a delightful place to catch a few rays and cool off in sparkling waters; it has a very relaxed ambience. Striking ‘porthole’ windows overlook historic King Street, and the Jacuzzi will ease muscles aching from too much sightseeing! Others may disagree with us and consider the Spa the finest place to be – certainly it’s very indulgent, offering a range of incredible treatments from Deep Tissue Massage to the deliciously satisfying body scrubs and all-natural facials. And then there’s the award-winning bars and restaurants. At the Charleston Grill, world-class jazz music meets mouth-watering cuisine with dishes divided into four categories – Social & Shared, Roots & Stems, Waves & Marsh, and Field & Pasture. Choose from savory seasonal seafood dishes or the signature Charleston Grill Crabcakes. If you’d rather dine al fresco, opt for The Palmetto Café, combining the very best of American Lowcountry cuisine with the freshest of ingredients. For tapas and cocktails, we recommend the Thoroughbred Club.

We selected a package that included breakfast, valet parking and a room upgrade which, in our case, put us on one of their Club floors. There are all sorts of treats during the day and an open bar at night. Our stay was too short to take advantage of the spa, the pool, and all this hotel offers. I could see this as a great spot for a “girls weekend” and definitely plan to make it at least a 2 day stop on our next drive to Hilton Head. Read less

Had a great mid-week 2-night stay in a Club Level room. Unfortunately, worked thru the bulk of our stay, so didn’t get to experience much of Charleston. But couldn’t pick a better hotel to be stuck in. Club Level not inexpensive, but the “complimentary” food and drinks you get in return for that privilege make it well worth the higher rate. Food was great, in terms of quality and variety, and staff was friendly and accommodating. Rooms were large and well-appointed. All other hotel staff we encountered were equally as helpful and eager to please. We had several transfers booked thru hotel and all were timely with engaging drivers. Particular shout out to Brian for getting us to Hall & Oates on time and for ensuring we got back safely afterwards, even though his shift had already ended. (He called the 2nd driver at almost 11pm to make sure we were okay). Had an exquisite dinner at Charleston Grill our first night. Vacillated between the 6 and 8 course tasting menu and settled on 6 at server’s recommendation. Glad we did. Portions are substantial and we were stuffed by the time the desserts arrived. I’ll leave a full review on their page, but highly recommend dining there. Cost was very much in line for tasting menu you would expect from this caliber of restaurant. And again, staff was fantastic. Had to cancel my spa package to work, but my sister thoroughly enjoyed her half day experience. Prices and service level in line for a 5-star hotel. Tons of shopping in area. Louis Vuitton and Gucci and multiple other stores are actually in the hotel. Dangerous to the wallet, but wonderfully convenient. Look forward to returning soon. Planning a sister weekend with all 4 of us and think this would be the perfect place to enjoy a long weekend. Thank you Belmond for your superb service and facilities. Back soon and we’ll definitely be checking out some of your sister properties as soon as we can. Read less

Most of the historic things you want to see are right out the door of the hotel and it is a gorgeous traditional Southern hotel. I came here with a conference and stayed on a few days extra, just so nice.

The Belmond Charleston Place is the largest hotel in Historic Charleston. It was nicely appointed and centrally located to walk about the city from King Street and Market Street to the Battery. The breakfast buffet was superb, as well as the dining room staff. It was perfect for a one night stay.

I only wish I could rate this facility higher. The management has paid great attention to detail and any possible traveler's needs have been met. The building is actually 8 stories high but from the street only appears to be 4 stories so as to blend well into the historic neighborhood. The well designed rooms are spacious, comfortable, beautifully furnished and well illuminated. The rooms are equipped with luxurious and comfy chairs, ottomans, reading lights, multiple mirrors, multiple shower heads, super soft carpeting, excellent quality linens and a refrigerator. The rooftop pool has a retractable roof and the open rooftop with bar extends outside the pool area. You can look down onto King Street! Every staff member from the valet, bell men, registrar, servers, housekeepers, etc. was extremely helpful, kind and down to earth. I was traveling with my handicapped husband and every one anticipated our needs. I had nothing to ask for. The lobby bar has a pianist and a unique list of specialty cocktails to try. All the food we ordered on the premises was high quality with generous portions. The tapas in the lobby bar were meals in themselves. The room service menu had much better than average selections that were prepared in the hotels restaurants. The hotel location is excellent. The city market is across the street. The carriage barns are about a block and a half. There are numerous good restaurants minutes away. There is no in room coffee maker but the coffee shop was a very reasonably priced alternative.
