Belmond Charleston Place

Charleston, South Carolina

The hotel

Seamlessly blending gentility and old-world charm with cutting edge amenities, the Belmond is widely regarded as one of Charleston’s finest accommodations. The jewel in the crown has got to be the swimming pool with retractable sunroof, a delightful place to catch a few rays and cool off in sparkling waters; it has a very relaxed ambience. Striking ‘porthole’ windows overlook downtown Charleston and the Jacuzzi will ease muscles aching from too much sightseeing! Others may disagree with us and consider the Spa the finest place to be – certainly it’s very indulgent, offering a range of incredible treatments from Deep Tissue Massage to the deliciously satisfying Magnolia Blossom Body Scrub. And then there’s the award-winning bars and restaurants. At the Charleston Grill, world-class jazz music meets mouth-watering cuisine with dishes divided into four categories – Pure, Lush, Southern and Cosmopolitan. Choose from delights such as seared flounder with buttery grits and shrimp or grilled peach salad with country ham and candied pecans. If you’d rather dine al fresco, opt for The Palmetto Café, combining the very best of American Lowcountry cuisine with the freshest of ingredients. For tapas and cocktails, we recommend the Thoroughbred Café, and, as all self-respecting southern establishments offer, afternoon tea is available at the hotel too.

When is it appropriate to have babies sit at the Throughbred bar in the hotel? Doesn’t matter if they are guests at the hotel or not. Took up 4 bar seats after 9:00 pm, what next changing diapers bartop? Management should have suggested seating them somewhere else. What’s next for babies, a strip club?

I was a big fan of this hotel during my brief visit to Charleston. We had a corner suite which was a nicer room; living room, roomy bathroom, and huge bedroom with a balcony overlooking Meeting Street. Service was top notch and there was nice bar in the lobby, Thoroughbred, which had couches and tables depending what you were looking for. Location… Read more

Where do I begin!? After a terrible airbnb booking with an unexpected gas leak, the large bachelorette party I was part of found ourselves stranded in a new city with nowhere to sleep in the middle of the night. All other hotels in Charleston were showing no availability. That's when I called Chris the front desk manager. Chris worked his magic, somehow found us enough rooms and put us into the Belmond's care for the remainder of our trip. We are SO glad we ended up here. Chris and his team: Everyone on staff at the Belmond is always smiling, helpful and accommodating. We felt like VIP's everywhere we went. Chris sent us personalized notes and champagne to our rooms after the terrible experience we went through the evening before with the airbnb. This really lifted our spirits and made us feel like we could start our trip again on the right foot. The cleaning staff does an amazing job and we really loved the evening turn down service. oUur server/bartender on the rooftop was super friendly and great at his job as well as the lead Valet man. The Hotel/Location: We loved staying in the french quarter across from the Charleston Market. Everything you need is in walking distance. The hotel itself is stately, full of luxury and class and is very well manicured. The rooms were beautiful, the beds were comfortable and the shower was amazing. We really enjoyed the rooftop pool and sunbathing area. It was a great way to relax and unwind while being downtown. I am sure that if any of the 11 of us come to Charleston again we will stay at the Belmond. We will never forget the memories made at this lovely hotel and the warm and welcoming kindness/helpfulness of Chris the front desk manager. Thank you so much Belmond! Read less

We love the hotel and the rooms are wonderful. It is in a perfect location for walking around Charleston. However, no coffee pot in the room and none in the lobby is a real negative for an otherwise outstanding property. Going to the in house coffee shop to stand in line does not work for me.

Highly recommended. The hotel is beautiful, bedrooms comfortable, service impeccable. Walking distance to historic Meeting Street, Waterfront Park, and the Battery. When my husband had a problem walking back from our ramble (due to his health issues), the hotel sent a car to pick us up! We stayed on the club level, which always seemed to have food and drink available (breakfast selections, afternoon tea, snacks). We had a lovely time and will certainly return to this hotel. Read less
