Courtyard Washington Embassy Row

Dupont Circle and Embassy Row, Washington DC

The hotel

The DC action surrounding this Scott Circle hotel’s a far contrast from the calm simplicity of its guestrooms, where extra touches include complimentary bottled water and WiFi. Just 3 blocks from Dupont Circle, you’ve got all the sightseeing you need within an easy walk (although you’re also near 3 metro stations if you’d rather save your shoe leather for exploring the sights themselves). There are the big names, like the White House 5 blocks away, and US Capitol Building a mile away; much-coveted monuments, like National Mall a mile away; and museums and galleries, many in the surrounding blocks, and with the Smithsonian Museums 2 miles away. Courtyard by Marriott Embassy Row gives plenty of excuses to return to base though, like its indoor pool and hot tub, fitness centre, and French-inspired bistro dining.

A couple of other recent reviews touched on the renovations issue, but I'd like to also add my experience. I booked this hotel because of certain amenities offered such as parking, fridge, microwave, and the continental breakfast. The location is great and the staff were friendly, but the renovations made the experience pretty terrible. First of all, the driveway out front is half blocked by construction equipment so there's no way to pass other cars if you happen to need to leave before the person in front of you. This is particularly frustrating once you realize that there's NOT on site parking so you need to either scramble to get your bags to your room or drag then down the street after parking in case you're blocking others. Again, construction needs removed available parking so we were advised during check in that we would have to park down the street and around the corner at a parking structure for $29/ night with no validation or reimbursement options. The room itself was pretty nice. We actually really liked the sliding door separating the sleeping area from the bathroom area. Beds were comfortable and shower was decent. Unfortunately, it seemed that most guests were placed on the 2and floor which wasn't a big deal until they started working on the renovations in the lobby at 7:30 each morning. It did help being on a lower floor when the elevators were used up by the construction crew, but can be tough when traveling with elderly or disabled persons. Also, the mini fridge and microwave have to be requested but the front desk doesn't mention that they're available so we went about 4 days without either before asking after remembering they were listed as items in the room. The breakfast was not what we were expecting. Usually there's a hot option of waffles or eggs, etc. The breakfast included items that were probably purchased from a grocery store that morning - muffins, bagels, individual cereal cups, a giant bowl of cold hard boiled eggs, and bananas were the main options. The staff were pretty friendly. We'd get items we requested fairly quick and they were pleasant when speaking with us. Overall, I would recommend not visiting until after the renovations are complete. It looks nice from what we saw at check out. Read less

Construction/remodeling going. Receptionist was great friendly and helpful. Room was beautiful. Enjoyed staying here would visit again. One issue I had was the breakfast area never had enough chairs, there were table spaces but no chairs. I think it was due to construction upstairs in the lobby. Still enjoyed it.

First, the good bits: Room was huge, nice comfortable king sized bed, bathroom/ toilet fittings newly done as part of renovation exhibiting premium feel. Decent breakfast. The disaster list: • Hotel still under renovation, place still looks work-in-progress and not worth the money I paid for the room • Lousy front desk staff told me on arrival that they had allotted me a room under renovation and had to change it (I immediately sensed something off)!?!? A few guests passing by seemed to be joking to warn me not to stay in the hotel as they were finding it terrible! • Room provided didn’t meet the standards as shown on booking site: it didn’t have a wardrobe or a safe or a sofa or fridge and the floor light wasn’t working either. Room overall quite dark • The telephone in the room wasn’t working to contact reception/ room service and they didn’t do/ offer anything to fix it! • Windows not soundproof and I could hear the sound of the traffic while sleeping during the night! • WiFi in the room extremely intermittent and painful to connect • Insisted on being given a different room, but reception staff said hotel was full and he couldn’t do anything until his front desk manager came in to work the next day. He mentioned I’d receive a paltry $15/ night off my room rate for the inconvenience, which he had no clue how I was going to get refunded to my card given the property charged my card the full amount at the start of the stay (even though there had been a confusion about the rooms being allotted) • Extremely incompetent front desk staff who couldn’t even clearly respond to simple questions about when his manager would be in to resolve my discontent with the room given • Front desk manager not possible to get hold of, he/she wasn’t even at work for 2 of the 4 days I was staying there (without any backup): ridiculously unprofessional The place seems to be run by a bunch of kids/ extremely lousy + unprofessional people who couldn’t care less about customer satisfaction, let along providing a decent service. Avoid at all costs! Read less

Best location. Closure to White House and National Geographic Society. Hotel is under renovation. No such disclosure at the time of booking. Very helpful front desk. They allowed me to check-in 2 hours prior to scheduled time. Housekeeping needs improvement. Quality breakfast.

Wonderful walk to White House and the Mall and hotel at a reasonable price. View of distant White House a few feet right of the hotel. Some construction/updates being done but a nice free breakfast being served during work as a compensation for minor inconveniences.
