Kimpton Mason & Rook Hotel

Dupont Circle and Embassy Row, Washington DC

The hotel

On the masculine side of sultry, this urban hangout’s dressed in macho greys, with muted jewel accents, monochrome detailing, and warming dashes of wood and distressed leather. It all fits in with the manly ‘cut and thrust’ of Washington DC and Kimpton Mason & Rook Hotel’s neighbourhood, which they describe as ‘the IT zone’. Steps from 14th Street, the rooms still ooze spaciousness from their former life as apartments. After grabbing free tea or coffee downstairs each morning, you can walk to the White House and other DC delights, or hop on a complimentary bike to explore – just be back for the nightly wine hour. Guests staying in summertime can mix days sightseeing with days at the rooftop pool, before joining local crowds at its accompanying bar for creative cocktails and starlit views over the capital.

After seeing nice write-ups of Mason & Rook i booked a stay that coincided with an ongoing renovation of the property that has the dining rooms and reception closed off, so any charms there may be aren't apparent. The rooms have stained rugs and aren't much better than your average Marriott. The staff is excellent but the services right now are… Read more

All in all, hotel was nice & comfortable. It was really surprising, however, not to have any way to make coffee or boil water in the room (pretty much every hotel in the country provides that now (?)) and the rooms are quite dark. Otherwise, fine.

Omg, the food was excellent! I was blown away by everything we ordered, from the deviled eggs, the fried cauliflower, the burger, and the lobster linguine, everything was 5 Stars! So good we had to let the chef know personally. We did however find out that the restaurant will close down after the hotel renovation beginning of the year which is… Read more

There’s something sketchy about this place and the constant unexplained charges. There’s something sketchy about this place and the constant unexplained charges. Their billing methods are all over the place and confusing, and while it all eventually falls into place a few days after check-out, you can’t deny that this is unsettling. As a someone who travels monthly staying in places all over the country, these scattered billing methods are not standard. I stayed there in October, and in addition to the numerous fees on top of their room charge, the sketchy happenings, and dull staff- this place isn’t worth the visit. I was charged about 60+ dollars on my credit card from their restaurant- a restaurant that I went into ONCE and only had one glass of wine. I never stepped foot in the restaurant otherwise and wasn’t on the property when the charge occurred. With proof, and after a bit of struggle, the charge was eventually reversed. Listen to the other reviews and be very wary. Read less

I've tried to get in touch with the hotel about my issues, but since i haven't been able to help, maybe writing here will help others. I've tried to get in touch with the hotel about my issues, but since i haven't been able to help, maybe writing here will help others. I checked into my room only to find 8 (i counted) different kinds of mouse traps set up. I called downstairs to ask if i could get a different room. No one at the front desk really helped, and i ended up just waiting to get re-assigned a room. The room was on a lower floor with a worse view - and the sheets had makeup on them. Even more frustrating is that i haven't been able to get a receipt from my trip - i asked on the way out, i called, and still nothing. Maybe someone will see this and send me my receipt :)? Read less
