The hotel

Ideally located for soaking up the culture and history of Washington, the Kimpton Hotel Madera is just a short walk from all attractions, including restaurants, bars and nightclubs. Although it’s so close, it’s peaceful ambience isn’t compromised in the least, offering a true respite from the hustle and bustle of the city. Award-winning service and comfort is what the Madera is all about and there’s a lot that’s complimentary, morning coffee and a hosted evening wine hour – perfect for getting to know your fellow holidaymakers. Adjacent to the hotel is the wildly popular Firefly Restaurant with its laid-back atmosphere and contemporary American comfort food. They also serve a mean cocktail – so even if you’re not dining here, pop in for a drink beforehand anyway.

During the five days stay just one elevater was operational, resulting up to 10 minutes waiting for. Last two days the internet was broken and the staff did not give right information. For me easy decision for this hotel: NEVER again!

If you are a young professional save your time and money and do NOT stay at this hotel. I recently stayed at The Kimpton Madera hotel in Washington, DC and had a terrible experience. The room was nice, but our overall stay was disappointing and the employees were rude and unwelcoming. As two young professionals, we were completely disregarded because of our age and were overlooked and pushed aside. In one instance, we called down to the valet to get our car and were told the wait would be approximately 10-15 minutes. We then went downstairs, checked out and proceeded to wait for the valet ($50/night) to return our car. After 40 minutes, we went inside and spoke to the woman at the front desk who did not provide us with any information regarding the wait time or retrieval of our car. In fact, when we asked politely for an update, she was not helpful and replied with "okay" when we thanked her for the "help." After an additional 10 minutes we finally received our car, as did another older couple who had just walked out to join us in waiting. They received their car within 5 minutes of their arrival. This was extremely disappointing as well as inconvenient to our travel plans. As young professionals, we have a longer duration of spending our time and money in a city like Washington, DC. However, we will not be spending it at a Kimpton Hotel ever again. The complete disregard for our stated concerns made our overall stay extremely disappointing. Read less

I stayed here with my mom for a long weekend. The location suited us perfectly, but the hotel is a bit odd. There’s really no lobby, and the rooms are large but the layouts are unusual. I read that the building is converted apartments, and you can tell. But it was quiet, clean, and had everything we needed. The staff (especially the doormen and… Read more

I read that the building is converted apartments, and you can tell. But it was quiet, clean, and had everything we needed. The staff (especially the doormen and bellhops) were friendly, and we enjoyed the restaurant next door (even though the manager berated staff loudly in front of the guests). Not sure I’d return because I have another preferred hotel near Dupont Circle. But it was fine this time. Read less

Our family of 2A & 4C arrived Washington DC on the 13th Jan. It was snowing! When we arrived the hotel (by our own private transfer) we had to drag our luggages by ourselves in this tiny corridor. The hotel has NO reception area but only a small counter. We were advised that their only restaurant in the hotel is closed since it’s snowing outside? Do we get any recommendations where to go? No, we had to ask where is the nearest restaurants open? ‘Check around there should be others open’? That wasn’t very helpful! My son used the toilet for the first time and flushed it, the water continuously flowed out of the Toilet! So we had to pour water by using their waste bin. Water gone to the carpet so we used towels to dry them off! Disgusting! We called reception for some dinner plates as we ordered food delivered to us (all other restaurants are open) for our dinner. ‘Sorry, our kitchen is closed’! Are you kidding! When you go to Washington DC Georgetown is a must to see. It’s about 25-30min walk from Madera. But we weren’t advised there’s a bus outside that takes you for $1! Do we have any choice but had to walk there and back at night for dinner in the snow with the kids! Then we see the bus that says $1 transport! They also offer complimentary tea/coffee in this tiny area right next to the front door of the hotel. We had an early flight so hoping to get coffee & tea but no hot water available for the coffee and no milk! 😬 Definitely not going back to this 4 Star Hotel! Read less

First I want to say that we LOVE Kimpton hotels and opt for one over any other hotel if possible. WeI have always had EXCELLENT experiences at a Kimpton and really hate that we have to rate the Madera as average, but there were highs, and there were lows. The location, style of the hotel, and prices are all great! Also the hotel honored our wish to be placed on an upper floor. The lows include a very small lobby/check-in area which is congested, one working elevator which was incredibly slow, and the toilet in the bathroom is in a tiny, tight, uncomfortable space (really bad design planning). Lots of other miscellaneous things that were not up to our past Kimpton standards included a long and haphazard check in...we park in front of hotel, no one to take baggage and park car so I go in the lobby and after a few minutes of waiting behind another guest checking in I realize that another person serving that guest wine from their complimentary wine hour was the car check/bell-hop. Finally we get checked in. Check in staff were professional but no warm and friendly as we are use to having. Signage in hotel direct you to get ice on floor 6...it is actually only on floor 3. We are at a Kimpton every December for a anniversary vacation. Every other hotel is decorated in some really festive manner except for the Madera...I posted a pic of the Charlie Brown Tree being their only holiday decorating. Also when we make our reservation we include that it is our anniversary. Every year we have always returned to our room on the first day of checking in and having complimentary champagne, candy, and a card for our celebration. This was the first time we received no acknowledgement by the hotel. We are still Kimpton fans but most likely will not stay at Madera again. I want to end this review by praising two employees.....Michelle at the front desk was very nice and did the little extras like wishing us a happy anniversary and smiling and welcoming us back any time we returned from being out and about. Also Eddie who assisted with our luggage for check out and returned our car...very nice, friendly, and personable guy. Read less
