Kimpton Mason & Rook Hotel

Washington DC, USA

The hotel

On the masculine side of sultry, this urban hangout’s dressed in macho greys, with muted jewel accents, monochrome detailing, and warming dashes of wood and distressed leather. It all fits in with the manly ‘cut and thrust’ of Washington DC and Kimpton Mason & Rook Hotel’s neighbourhood, which they describe as ‘the IT zone’. Steps from 14th Street, the rooms still ooze spaciousness from their former life as apartments. After grabbing free tea or coffee downstairs each morning, you can walk to the White House and other DC delights, or hop on a complimentary bike to explore – just be back for the nightly wine hour. Guests staying in summertime can mix days sightseeing with days at the rooftop pool, before joining local crowds at its accompanying bar for creative cocktails and starlit views over the capital.

The view from the rooftop bar is both awesome and very ugly. Unnecessarily ugly. Over the past year I've been to the rooftop several times, including last weekend. Each time we take in the beautiful city view of rooftops, church steeples.......and a bunch of bright orange traffic cones, connected by a chain, on Mason and Rook's roof beside the bar. I guess one could just stand on the other side and ignore the cones and half of the city, but it sure would be nice if they just removed the cones. They're bright, ugly, sloppy, and they ruin the view. It's too bad because we liked everything else about the bar and the people. Read less

We’re currently staying in a room that’s just not clean enough. We checked in and found the conditioner bottle littered with pubic hair and the carpet is pretty deeply soiled everywhere. Looks good from a distance, but up close I’d rather stay at another Logan hotel. I normally stay at the Darcy, which isn’t as good of a location, but is spotless.

There is an ownership transition here which entails IT systems...they seem to be missing reservations (including mine despite a confirm number from a luxury travel agent I have not had a problem with before . Room is nicely appointed but that doesn’t compensate for the fact that it overlooks a garbage dump as do all the rooms in the back of the… Read more

Room is nicely appointed but that doesn’t compensate for the fact that it overlooks a garbage dump as do all the rooms in the back of the hotel. Common space on ground floor is not properly air conditioned. Hotel is not cheap, and I am flabbergasted by the good reviews. Read less

Stayed here for a business trip and I hope that I will have opportunity to go back. The rooms are huge and the hotel is quiet yet it is in the heart of DC. Located just off of 14th Ave and on Rhode Island Avenue, this gem of a hotel caters to both families and business travelers. There are plenty of outlets to plug in all electronics and… Read more

We liked this place. Pool not big but it cools. Food and drinks nice, and lively area. Also free bikes to help you get around. Prefer this over the bigger hotels that fit all. Washington city is also a great place to visit!
