Kimpton Topaz Hotel

Washington DC, USA

The hotel

A Kimpton hotel that believes in going the extra mile, the Hotel Topaz also enjoys a prime location, close to the Dupont Circle and therefore all of Washington DC’s attractions. Recently renovated, it’s a hotel where guests return time after time to enjoy a warm, welcoming atmosphere, good quality amenities and the comfort of a well-equipped room. It’s the little touches that count, and the Topaz offers them in abundance, yoga mats in rooms for example and a friendly goldfish delivered to your room should you desire a little companionship! There’s a lot that’s complimentary too – morning coffee in the living room and a hosted wine evening. For pre-dinner drinks, head to the Topaz Bar – drinks are named after the signs of the zodiac so there’s plenty to try! In-room dining is also available should you simply want to relax in private after a busy day.

$460 later and I cannot fathom how this property is considered a Kimpton. Kimpton hotels are luxurious boutique hotels. Luxury at it's core. This hotel is dated from the 90's if we are lucky. $460 later and I cannot fathom how this property is considered a Kimpton. Kimpton hotels are luxurious boutique hotels. Luxury at it's core. This hotel is dated from the 90's if we are lucky. The pictures show a far more glamorous antique French themed hotel. I was told they were starting renovations. Renovations are in dire need here. Mis-matched light bulbs. Damaged furniture. Peeling wallpaper. Showerheads that cannot even accommodate a 6' tall male. The "bar" downstairs in the lobby is the worst I've ever seen in a Kimpton. Ever. It was so depressing. All it is used for is the afternoon wine social and the free breakfast (which was actually fine given that it's free). I would have been fine with this place if I didn't pay the bullcrap "amenity fee" as a elite top tier member at IHG. I would have been fine if it wasn't $460 on a Wednesday night. Overall until I have distinct knowledge of a full renovation I'll never stay at this location again. And let me clarify, the staff were wonderful. But they offered no excuses or apologies for the poor condition of their hotel. They just smiled as I paid the bill. Read less

i stayed here for two nights this week - it’s my third or fourth visit in two years. The staff are fantastic - friendly to a fault. i miss the bar, but appreciate the two free wine services. it’s located on a quiet street, but walkable to Dupont Circle.

Ley me start by saying that I absolutely LOVE Kimpton Hotels. Usually. But not in this case. I am in the travel industry and travel a lot, and I will always stay in a Kimpton if there is one so I have to have stayed in at least a dozen. Ley me start by saying that I absolutely LOVE Kimpton Hotels. Usually. But not in this case. I am in the travel industry and travel a lot, and I will always stay in a Kimpton if there is one so I have to have stayed in at least a dozen. I can honestly say if I had stayed in the Topaz first I wouldn't be a Kimpton fan. The hotel is in an awesome location, as many have said. But it is in need of a refresh for sure in terms of the hard goods and the upkeep. Bathrooms are not up to Kimpton standards at all with older tiles. The carpet was coming up at the entrance to the bathroom so carpet tacks were exposed. The furniture is dark. There are no USB ports or plugs easily accessible beside the beds (in fact there is no way to play music unless you happened to bring your own aux cord bc the ihome alarm clock is an old 30 pin charger and connector, not sure how this is still there?). The breakfast is also definitely not up to Kimpton standards. We stay frequently at the Nine Zero in Boston and theirs is lovely but this is a continental that is more limited than a Hampton Inn with pastries, cereal, apples and yogurt? One positive is that the people staffing the breakfasts were great - very sweet and provided great service (smiles and hellos). The rest of the service though was not at all what I have received before. Instead of the warm welcome we usually get they were more blah. We had put in for upgraded rooms if available (for a fee) on check in and it wasn't even acknowledged, we had to ask if they were available or not. After they went in to look they happened to notice that we were higher level loyalty members and said "oh yeah, the upgrade isn't available bc we are sold out but we can give you your amenity". In the morning when we came down for breakfast the second morning the 2 women at the front desk were ignored the fact that there were guests there and spent tine loudly complaining about everything from guests complaining during the night about AC (which wasn't working by the way, so it was ridiculously warm and uncomfortable in the rooms, and we got little sleep) and their lives in general, even though the front desk is adjacent to where the breakfast was served. In fact at one point they were talking to each other from the breakfast room to the front desk. A lot of detail I know but with so many other amazing hotel options in DC, I will definitely give this one a pass next time, and may even be hesitant to stay in another DC Kimpton at all. We were booked for a 2 night stay and came very close to leaving after the first night, in retrospect I wish we had. Read less

I got placed in a dark loud room facing the employee parking lot on the second floor. I would hear the door slam anytime an employee left at the end of their shift that night and the room felt and looked old. The water pressure was extremely low and was lukewarm. The room was not serviced while I was out the whole day. To make up for some of this, they provided a bottle of wine which I thought was a nice gesture until I tasted it, and also realized I could get it at a store for $5. Overall, the staff was pretty nice and helpful and the location was good, but the experience was not great and I'll likely not stay here again. Read less

10 minute walk from metro, quiet location, 15 minute walk to white house, choice of coffee shops and restaurants nearby. Rooms are big, really comfy bed, nothing not to like. Breakfast included, cereal, toast etc, starts the day off well. Between 5 to 6 and 8 til 9 there is complimentary wine in the bar, nice touch. Check out is at 12.
