The hotel

A Kimpton hotel that believes in going the extra mile, the Hotel Topaz also enjoys a prime location, close to the Dupont Circle and therefore all of Washington DC’s attractions. Recently renovated, it’s a hotel where guests return time after time to enjoy a warm, welcoming atmosphere, good quality amenities and the comfort of a well-equipped room. There’s a lot that’s complimentary too – morning coffee in the living room and a hosted wine evening. For pre-dinner drinks, head to the Topaz Bar – drinks are named after the signs of the zodiac so there’s plenty to try! From the shabby little lobby to the breakfast of sliced white bread and bucket-o-margarine on the counter to the postage stamp sized bathroom, this was the worst experience we’ve ever had at a D.C. hotel. Because of this there will be no Kimpton hotels for us ever. Kimpton said the GM of the hotel would contact us, but all we received from him was a generic guest satisfaction survey. The final straw was the sneaky little hotel fee they tried to add to our bill at checkout. We persevered and we’re able to have this removed from the bill, but NEVER AGAIN! Read less

First, I will say the staff was extremely pleasant. Every person I worked with was kind and attentive. The location is also in a convenient residential area near Dupont Circle with easy access to Metro stations and downtown. There are lots of restaurants in close walking distance. The room we had was spacious and clean, though the decor was a little tired. I enjoyed the rotating fruit infused water offered in the lobby. The real negative for me was the breakfast (consisting of coffee, tea, juice, a limited selection of fresh fruit, and some breads and pastries.) I've stayed at many lower end chains that offered higher quality breakfasts. For a Kimpton and for the price, my expectations were a lot higher. Read less

I recently stayed at the Kimpton Topaz Hotel while attending a conference in DC. This lovely hotel on a quiet street with a welcoming staff offered an ideal break from the hectic pace of my work activities. I'd like to give a shout out to Cheyla (spelling?), McKayla, and Rachel, as well as Rosita who found my black tea. These folks went above and… Read more

This lovely hotel on a quiet street with a welcoming staff offered an ideal break from the hectic pace of my work activities. I'd like to give a shout out to Cheyla (spelling?), McKayla, and Rachel, as well as Rosita who found my black tea. These folks went above and beyond in their own ways, making my stay comfortable. Every single person I interacted with was kind and helpful. I felt like I was part of a family. Thank you! Read less

We thought when booking a Kimpton Hotel that we would get a property of a certain standard. This falls well below what was expected. A rather crummy reception area sets the tone for ones stay. We thought when booking a Kimpton Hotel that we would get a property of a certain standard. This falls well below what was expected. A rather crummy reception area sets the tone for ones stay. When checking in I asked were there any extra charges to pay. We were informed that a compulsory resort or facilities fee of $25 per person per night. Sorry but if it’s compulsory then don’t sell rooms at a lower price to increase this. That’s just deceptive. Anyway, the receptionist said that if I would sign up to their rewards program then he would waive the fee. Great, I signed up with no intention of using the brand again. The other irritating thing was the complimentary breakfast. Now that’s a laugh. The first morning we came down at a reasonable time to find everything, and I mean everything, had been eaten. Nothing left! Though this situation improved over the coming days it was still below standard. The wine reception wasn’t worth the bother! Read less

This is one of the worst value for money hotels I have experienced. Rooms are run down and old, staff is unhelpful and there is no room service. But the worst part is the breakfast: it is barely at motel levels for a $300/night level: stale pastries, Fruit Loops, no eggs or fruit. Do no stay here!
