Image of the Tripadvisor rating Great location and great night's sleep - pricey for when I stayed

I recently stayed one night at the Sofitel Washington DC Lafayette Square for the first time for a work related trip. I had made the reservation well in advance, but the rate was still over $500. The hotel was within walking distance to the White House and my meetings in the lobby district, about 15 minutes from Union Station. Check in was very quick and the front desk noted I was upgraded to a room with a view and received a $30 breakfast credit as a first time guest. The room was very large with a king bed, a desk and a bathroom with one sink, a sinking tub and a stall shower with a rain shower head. The HVAC kept the room at a very comfortable temperature and the bed and pillows were very comfortable. The room was also very quiet and I had one of the best night’s sleep I have had at a hotel in a long time. The water pressure was very good with plenty of hot water. The hotel service included turn down and the hotel left me a bottle of Evian water, jellies, a tart and chocolate covered strawberry. Breakfast was slightly over priced, as a bagel, yogurt, fruit and coffee were almost $40, inclusive of a 18% breakfast gratuity. Overall, the hotel was very nice, quiet and expensive. If I were traveling on my own, I would probably chose a more affordable alternative. The room décor as not new, and somewhat dated, but actually fine. I really liked the service and have lots of praise for the Sofitel. If I could get a better rate I would stay here more often. Read less

The hotel is excellently located - pretty much all of tourist or business DC is within easy reach. The central location also means that one can usually get an Uber within five minutes. The bedrooms are very comfortable, well laid out and with loads of closet space. Good bathroom with excellent lighting for ladies to do their make up. The Sofitel is a good choice for a comfortable high end hotel at a reasonable price for its location. Its price point makes it a competitive option. There are some indications that maintenance staff are not paying close attention: (1) many of the power and USB outlets by the bed and at the desk were not actually powered; (2) the seal on the shower door did not work well, so after using the shower there was water on the floor around the door, which is definitely not a good idea on a slippery marble floor. It may be that previous guests just did not tell the front desk so these items could be fixed, but wouldn't housekeeping notice a faulty seal on a shower door? I was not impressed by the hotel restaurant, Opaline. Breakfast/brunch took a long time to arrive and when it did it was underwhelming. Service could be improved, as could the quality of what the kitchen prepares. My feeling is that this is the weak point in an otherwise good hotel. Easy solutions for high end lunch or dinner include Bobby Van's Steakhouse opposite the hotel and Alhambra at the St. Regis (5 minutes' walking distance) and plenty of other choices nearby. Read less

Sofitel is one of the very best values in high end hotel chains. If you want to be close to the White House, the Mall and major museums, this is as good a location as it gets. Insist on having a city view as the inside courtyards are likely to trigger a claustrophobic crisis. Only one negative point: breakfast service is not at the expected level and the check has a line called « breakfast «  which is simply a tip charge of 18%. If you don’t pay attention, there is also a tip line below, so you might end up paying twice 18% ( including 18% on 18%). This is neither clever nor very transparent. Read less

The room was not large, but it was attractive and functional. There was a huge TV and separate shower and tub. The lighting was excellent, and the housekeeping was top notch (including a very friendly housekeeper). The price was very high: perhaps there was an especially high demand. I noticed prices were much lower just after we left! The Metro is just a block away. Having a quiet and dark room is crucial, and both were excellent in that regard. We'd definitely return. Read less
