The Jefferson

Washington DC, USA

The hotel

You can’t stay at the White House – but this five star hotel comes pretty close. And we’re not just talking about its location near DC’s most famous ‘house’. The Jefferson Hotel also has a distinctly ‘Presidential’ air about it. Inspired by the beloved plantation of the third US President, and hotel’s namesake, everything from your guestroom’s drapes, to the ingredients in Petite Spa’s treatments, to the epicurean delights at its Michelin-starred Plume restaurant, has a nod to Thomas Jefferson. Even the hotel’s pet pooch is named after his plantation, ‘Monticello’. Inside its beautiful Beaux Arts wrapping, mod cons like complimentary WiFi mingle with a vast collection of antiques, artworks, and historic documents signed by Jefferson. But the pièce de résistance is the original 1923 skylight, flooding light into The Greenhouse, one of the hotel’s three exclusive dining venues.

After I tried multiple places & times on line, Cliff, one of the concierges of the Jefferson Hotel was able to obtain timed passes to the African American Museum for History & Culture for our April trip. So glad he did because it was the highlight of our recent DC trip. The hotel is centrally located to many museums. We were easily accommodated by the hotel in getting taxis. A minor problem with the shower head was quickly fixed. Staff friendly & accommodating. We were celebrating our 46th anniversary & the staff was so kind to acknowledge that with chocolate dipped strawberries & a congratulatory note. The hotel is said to be boutique but it seems more like a small hotel to me not boutique size. Rooms are impeccably clean & super quiet. Seemed like a business hotel as there were conference rooms & lots of corporate people. The Quill was a wonderful little bar/restaurant that we took advantage of during our 4 day stay. If I can make a few suggestions to the hotel I would encourage the use of guests by name by the staff. In boutique hotels they usually know who is coming & going. By the way, the security in this hotel is very good. I would also like to suggest some complimentary snacks during the day to guests. The coffee & mini morning muffins were very good but other than that it is nonexistent. Other than those 2 suggestions I enjoyed my stay & would recommend this hotel to others looking for a quiet, super clean stay while in DC Read less

Checked into this hotel at the last minute after another one was just horrible. It was during cherry blossom time and so there was very limited availability in Washington. The service was top-notch and the room just amazing. Someone came in to top up the ice water, turn down the bed and leave a chocolate eclair. Heaven...

Other members of business party all complained about their hotels, but we were more than pleased. So happy we chose The Jefferson! My husbands’ colleagues tried to change to our hotel, but it was too late. Book early as it fills up fast. Equivalent level of service and comfort would be Peninsula (if that gives an idea of what to expect). We will make The Jefferson our go-to hotel in DC. Read less

My husband and I just returned from a weekend getaway at The Jefferson. We really enjoyed our stay there - the location is perfect, and the hotel does a fantastic job of taking you back to the gentility of days past while providing every modern comfort and convenience. "Civilized" is the first word that came to both our minds when describing the property. Our room (a standard queen room on the second floor) was well appointed and very comfortable. I was a bit concerned when we checked in that our room was right next to the elevator, but we did not hear a peep all night. We loved touches like the valet and the offer of newspaper service at check-in. Morning coffee in The Book Room was a treat - the complimentary muffins were delicious and the wood paneled room was a beautiful spot to spend a few minutes each morning. Service was fantastic - room service arrived quickly and was beautifully presented, and twice-a-day housekeeping did an excellent job. All the staff we encountered were personable and professional. We also enjoyed a lovely Sunday brunch at the Greenhouse restaurant. Overall an excellent stay - we would not hesitate to recommend The Jefferson to anyone visiting DC! Read less

The room was perfect with everything we needed and so stylish and comfortable. The coffee and muffins each morning were just what was needed to get you out for the day. The location was great just a few blocks from the whitehouse and nearby transport for seeing all the sites. I would recommend brunch in the the greenhouse if you get the chance it was amazing. I would love to stay at the Jefferson again. Read less
