The Jefferson

Washington DC, USA

The hotel

You can’t stay at the White House – but this five star hotel comes pretty close. And we’re not just talking about its location near DC’s most famous ‘house’. The Jefferson Hotel also has a distinctly ‘Presidential’ air about it. Inspired by the beloved plantation of the third US President, and hotel’s namesake, everything from your guestroom’s drapes, to the ingredients in Petite Spa’s treatments, to the epicurean delights at its Michelin-starred Plume restaurant, has a nod to Thomas Jefferson. Even the hotel’s pet pooch is named after his plantation, ‘Monticello’. Inside its beautiful Beaux Arts wrapping, mod cons like complimentary WiFi mingle with a vast collection of antiques, artworks, and historic documents signed by Jefferson. But the pièce de résistance is the original 1923 skylight, flooding light into The Greenhouse, one of the hotel’s three exclusive dining venues.

Had a wonderful time here. Staff is outstanding and the service was excellent. We got back to the hotel late from dinner and they had live piano music in the bar/lounge which made for a memorable evening. We will certainly be back.

This is a tough one. I was so excited to stay at this hotel and it in many ways lived up to my expectations however the more I recollect the the less I enjoyed my stay. Firstly, my room was small, very small. The bed was large and lovely but allowed only about 16 inches from the end to the cabinet holding the mini-bar. So small you have to stand to the side to open and not even to its fullest extent. Next, there was some visible wear in the room a coat of paint would cover. There is a very nice, full size bar of bath soap in the bathroom but only one. I had to repeatedly take it from the shower to the sink and back as needed. Two soaps would solve that issue. Sure I could have called for another however I feel a hotel of this calibre should anticipate that type of need. I received a nice amenity and note from the hotel in my room upon arrival however the card had another guest's name on it. The mini-fridge (the one close to the foot of the bed) has a nice assortment of beverages however it is equipped with those pesky sensors that track what you pick-up and instantly charges you. I still need to confirm that $5 soda has been removed from my bill. I was preparing to depart the room and while gathering my belongings the television abruptly cut-off at check-out time. I know they have a strict expectation about departing at 11AM however this just seemed a little too intentional. They do score an A+ on the complimentary shoe shine, closet and bathroom size! There were a few other things that I could mention however my intention is not to nit-pick. It is a lovely property and I may consider again on another trip to the city however the excitement I felt initially is probably lost for good. Read less

Didn't stay at the Jefferson - We ate at The Plume for a special family evening. Extremely nice quiet room, Good attention by the wait staff. Very good, expensive, fixed price dinner. Creative choices, well done by the chef. Deserves the rating. Rub elbows with the DC elite.
