The Kimpton Donovan

Washington DC, USA

The hotel

The Kimpton Donovan’s earned its right to reside in the US capital, with slick urban styling, signature Kimpton service, and cool communal hangouts. Its guestrooms may seem minimalist, but they’re packed with smart detailing, like oversized ceiling-skimming leather headboards, space-age chairs, and spiral showers. They’re the perfect setting for the in-room spa services. If you can tear yourself away, the lobby has complimentary hot drinks each morning, and a wine hour early evenings to welcome you back from sightseeing. And it’s easy to sightsee here, with attractions like The White House and 14th Street a walk away. When you return, retreat to the DNV Rooftop Lounge, with its pool, cocktail menu, and DC views.

We had a brief but great stay at the Kimpton Donovan Hotel. Made sure to get a room with a view of Thomas Circle. It was obvious I'd been crying when we checked in because our rental car had been broken into and several things were stolen. It was obvious I'd been crying when we checked in because our rental car had been broken into and several things were stolen. The woman working the desk gave us a free bottle of wine since we'd just missed their cocktail/happy hour and she upgraded our room too. This was definitely a bright spot in an otherwise horrible day. Would return if in the area again. Read less

I had stayed at the Kimpton Monaco and unfortunately I much preferred it to this one. Service and general amenities are equally attentive but there are distinct differences. My number one complaint is that the workout room is way too isolated. There was one repairman(?) working on the air conditioner(?) in the courtyard area that is within full view while on the treadmill I used. I'd like more privacy or at the very least, for the workout room to be in the vicinity of higher traffic area of the hotel. There aren't many restaurants nearby so we were really let down that the restaurant on site is only open occasionally. Our room was pretty small but adequate. At this price point, I like more plushness. Read less

The refrigerator never got below 60 degrees. The plastic floor in the shower was slick with no grab bars. Scary as hell. One doorman made no attempt to assist a guest on the smoker's bench when accosted by an insane panhandler. He said, "What do you want me to do? Call the police?" Other doormen were more helpful. I would rate it as a rough… Read more

We neither use the restaurant services due to early closure as well. Read less

Wow. This was a fun happening place a few years ago. That's DONE as I witnessed from my last visit 8-23-19 to 8-25-19. Check in was pleasant with David. Wow. This was a fun happening place a few years ago. That's DONE as I witnessed from my last visit 8-23-19 to 8-25-19. Check in was pleasant with David. I asked if I could have the lower rate that was posted online that morning and I was denied. No worries I was there to enjoy the rooftop pool and bar which was closed understandably due to rain however Sat and Sun had a great forecast. The CIA theme has been done away with sadly - retro items have been removed from the lobby - no longer given a TOP SECRET mini envelope with the key to the mini bar with 2 free drinks. The room I was assigned to did not have the shower that I was accustomed too - no star trek looking beam me up stall. When I used the commode water shot up into a fountain upon flushing. The sink had a similar reaction a couple of times when used. This room musn't have been rented in awhile or there was a DC Water shut off within recent time. The overhead bed lights were not operational. I called the fron desk and asked if the 5 PM happy hour meet and greet was still an event and I was assured it was. When I entered the lobby the check-in staff was there and no one else. I asked where the HH setup was and then I was asked what was my beverage of choice. Amstel light I requested and after 2 botlles I was told they would have to restock. Not fun. The pool in the morning opened a 7 AM much earlier than in the past and the bar didn't open until 4pm much later then when this property was a Kimpton Hotel. I was told by staff and reassured that the Donavan would be renovated which I guess was to comfort me. The window had a nice view of the Washington Plaza Hotel pool which is where I will staying in the future. Bye Bye Donovan. Read less
