The Mayflower Hotel, Autograph Collection

Washington DC, USA

The hotel

Rubbing shoulders with the political bigwigs of Washington DC, The Mayflower is just a few blocks from the city’s most famous address, the White House. It’s a landmark in its own right though, welcoming guests for more than 90 years and listed on the National Register of Historic Places, its supersized and super-opulent marble lobby would befit any visiting statesman. Its dining venue would suit dignitaries too – EDGAR Bar & Kitchen is all edgy masculine styling, high-end drinks and cocktails, and American brasserie favourites with an upscale twist. Luckily, its fitness centre is open 24/7 to work off all the treats and tipples – although, you’re better off getting out and exploring all the landmarks, museums, and galleries within a stroll of your doorstep, from Smithsonian museums to world-class shopping magnets, or hopping on the subway just around the corner.Rubbing shoulders with the political bigwigs of Washington DC, The Mayflower is just a few blocks from the city’s most famous address, the White House.

This was a silent auction item at my church, I won it and got to go at the height of the cherry blossoms weekend. Great food, great location. Will always cherish this trip for so many reasons. Hope to go back some day.

We asked for a travel crib, which they provided. With no sheet! They tried to pass us off with a regular sheet tucked in, which was completely irresponsible. We asked for them to provide a sheet, never received any help. So bring your own sheet for the baby! Good hotel otherwise, doors from other guests rooms slam really loud so bring ear plugs… Read more

It’s been a while since I was in DC, so I was looking forward to a few days in the Mayflower Hotel, which is well located for those seeking to look around the city. The experience starts slightly oddly with taxi drop off being to a side door rather than the main entrance, not a big issue but certainly loses kerb appeal up front. Pleasant enough check in and off to a reasonably spacious room, last decorated in the 1990’s I suspect. Gasping for a tea I sought out the kettle, and found there are no facilities for hot drinks in any rooms. The two small bottles of water from check in vanished quickly instead, and were never replaced. A few hours later I was meet colleagues for a drink at Edgar’s Bar - perfectly good beer and bar snacks - so a gold star there. On Edgar’s the dinners are also decent, and breakfasts are OK. A big frustration was the lack of support for international travelers, if you’re awake at 4am there’s no hot drinks in room or 24 hour cafes, and the gym is ill equipped for the number of guests about at that time. Overall good location, good staff, outdated decor and sadly under equipped for the modern international business traveler. I’ll find somewhere else next time. Read less

If you favor historic hotels with their unique configurations and occasional odd quirks, you will love this hotel. It has been beautifully renovated and modernized, but has retained much of its original beauty and charm. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay. Special thanks to Joelle at the front desk for going above and beyond; she is a jewel!

It was billed as a 5 star hotel. Sadly it is long over due for a makeover. I would go somewhere else for the price - as it is not worth the rate i paid! I travel a lot across the US on business and was very dissapointed with the general decor of the room and quality of the restaurant in the main lobby area. The room was very small and the bathroom shower was very tired looking. I appreciate the hotel has a number of huge ball rooms , however its very dated. On a postive note I thought the service of both the reception and conceige was excellent. In fact i informed the main desk that i would be arriving around 11pm on the Friday and asked if they could recommend any good tours. They recommened and booked me on an all day tour which cost in excess $125! it was an excellent choice. Read less
