The Mayflower Hotel, Autograph Collection

Washington DC, USA

The hotel

Rubbing shoulders with the political bigwigs of Washington DC, The Mayflower is just a few blocks from the city’s most famous address, the White House. It’s a landmark in its own right though, welcoming guests for more than 90 years and listed on the National Register of Historic Places, its supersized and super-opulent marble lobby would befit any visiting statesman. Its dining venue would suit dignitaries too – EDGAR Bar & Kitchen is all edgy masculine styling, high-end drinks and cocktails, and American brasserie favourites with an upscale twist. Luckily, its fitness centre is open 24/7 to work off all the treats and tipples – although, you’re better off getting out and exploring all the landmarks, museums, and galleries within a stroll of your doorstep, from Smithsonian museums to world-class shopping magnets, or hopping on the subway just around the corner.Rubbing shoulders with the political bigwigs of Washington DC, The Mayflower is just a few blocks from the city’s most famous address, the White House.

So we stayed at this hotel because of the near proximity to all of the activities we planned on part taking in and around the Washington DC area. We rented a one night room at this hotel because of a "late check in deal." He was our experience at this location. He's the pluses: Very nice hotel, well decorated lobby, nearby restaurants within walking distance. Very nice room with somewhat clean carpets. Ours came with two queens. The furniture looked modern and in good condition. Marbled bathroom floors. Now for the negatives: There literally wasn't any parking in front of the hotel and I had to park in the street to unload our bags. To park your vehicle overnight is $61.00! I parked across the the street in a public parking for half the price. Not impressed with the rooms overall cleanliness because of the following; In our bathroom, there is a ceiling leak that had been patched. I discovered this because of a wet tissue box. (fresh putty or caulk had been applied. This was verified by room service when I called to complain about the problem!? The lady said, "I know there's a leaking water dripping from the ceiling?") "Smudged mirror and a dead bug on one of the beds!" The manager asked if I wanted the sheets changed and I said no because we were tired. Took a shower only to have the tub fill up half way up! Called and complained about this and they resent someone else to resolve this issue. It gives me no pleasure posting negative reviews but the whole purpose is to inform others of the positives and negative feedback of our experiences. Read less

Spent a couple of nights at this hotel on a business trip. The hotel is in a great location within walking distance to all of the attractions in DC. Beautiful architecture throughout, excellent staff and located within walking distance of many DC attractions. Attending a conference I’d say they did a fine job of supporting the needs of the event. A/C, tech, sound system, lighting, public areas...everything was good. We checked in to our first room and it was very must or damp. A phone call to the desk and we were quickly moved to another room that was just fine. One thing that I’d consider unusual was that there are no coffee makers in the rooms. I can appreciate their wanting guests to patronize the lobby restaurant but it seems an odd thing to eliminate in a modern hotel. Read less

Flew in overnight, exhausted and compounded by the airline losing my luggage. Not having the best day but when we got the Mayflower, things immediately started looking up. The front desk clerk said she’d do her best to get us an early check in (To others in this same situation, this can’t happen all the time so ask, but don’t expect it) We hadn’t eaten yet either so had breakfast at Edgar’s (the attached restaurant) while we waited for our room. Got the call, your room is ready. So happy. We were on the 6th floor. Everything is pristine, the hallways are wide and the elevators, FAST!! Our room was charming and classy and perfect. It feels like a junior suite but if this is a regular room, bravo. Ours has an very wide entryway, with bathroom on the left (far enough away for real privacy) and sleeping area on the right. A refrigerator but no coffee service. A Keurig would have been nice but there’s free coffee tucked inside Edgar’s. Beds & linens, soft and cozy (we slept for hours but it’s just what was needed) and it’s VERY quiet. Ice machine steps away but in a room with a door-again, so quiet. No view to speak of but we’re not here to look out the windows. Will use the concierge tomorrow. The lobby is beautiful, too. Few blocks from the White House and the National Geographic Museum. I spoke at length with the hostess at Edgar’s, Aregash, (hope I spelled that right) She was a wealth of information and such a good ambassador for the hotel. It says a lot when the staff are happy to be part of a company. Very pleased in all aspects of The Mayflower Hotel. Read less
