Gray Wolf Inn at West Yellowstone

Montana, Wild West

The hotel

For most, the location of Gray Wolf Inn & Suites would be enough: just two blocks from the west entrance of Yellowstone National Park, you’re minutes from its famous natural attractions. But that didn't stop the owners giving the inn a $1.4 million makeover, with everything from the rooms to the swimming pool getting a facelift. Welcoming guests all year round, so you can see the region in every season, the inn’s spacious rooms and suites are popular with families. The complimentary parking means road trips are easy, although many West Yellowstone highlights are within strolling distance, with Grizzly & Wolf Discovery Center just over the road, and Yellowstone Historic Center and Yellowstone IMAX Theatre two blocks away.

On Sunday, May 12th we checked into this hotel for one night before heading into Yellowstone park for a week. Being that it was Mother’s Day, my son and his fiancee had given me a very nice bottle of my favorite white wine, which I put in the room’s refrigerator. I also put 2 small plastic bottles of cheap white wine (unopened) and one unopened bottle of water in the fridge. The next morning we checked out, and as we were driving to Old Faithful, I realized I had forgotten the wine in the room fridge. As soon as we got within cell service at Old Faithful, I called the hotel and spoke to “Gloria” at the front desk. I told her my situation, and she said if the room has already been cleaned, the housekeeping staff is instructed to get rid of any alcohol in the room. She said she would go upstairs to the room to see if it was still there, and I would call her back in 15 minutes. I called her back and she said the room had already been cleaned and there was nothing in the fridge, however she would let the head of housekeeping know to be on the lookout for any found wine. A few hours later my brother-in-law and his family pulled in to West Yellowstone (they were meeting up with us at Old Faithful for a family reunion) so he went to the hotel to see if they had found the wine. Low and behold, they had found the two small plastic cheap bottles of wine, but the expensive bottle (and the water) was not there. Obviously the housekeeping staff turned over the cheap bottles, but did not fess up to finding the expensive bottle. I understand it was my dumb fault for forgetting the wine in the first place, however the fact that the housekeeping staff turned in the cheap bottles but denied finding the good bottle is pretty sketchy. If they had half a brain, they should've turned in nothing. Then I might have bought the story that they got rid of it like they were supposed to. I will never stay at this hotel again, and I do not recommend them to anyone. Read less

She was not helpful and seemed a bit irritated w us, I wanted to tell her, you will need to be a lot better at this in about 4 weeks when you are bombarded with guests!!! The room was super nice, we had a small issue with housekeeping but Lee Ann came up almost immediately and took care of it with a smile and kindness, very impressed with her. Great personality and attention to detail. The breakfast is really nice, could have had one more warm egg item as the taquierras were very spicy. The gal that maintained the breakfast area, Krisan, was one of the hardest workers I have noted at a breakfast hotel area, she was non stop taking extra care of the area and with a big smile....super nice, cute, perfect for this job!!!! We also had a really nice visit as we checked out with Gloria M, much better than our check in. She is super helpful and cares about this property and her care of her guests. All in all the beds were really comfy, loved the extra sink area. We would definitely stay here again, the hot tub felt great after a cool afternoon of hiking. thanks to a wonderful staff as noted above. Read less

Good base for yellowstone, the free breakfast was ok, snacks during the day was nice. The pool and hot tub was quite nice. The beds were comfortable, shower pressure was good. Toiletries were bath and body works. The place was clean but probably could do with some renovation. The one thing that bothers me is that I booked the Yellowstone Park… Read more

Front desk staff, especially Gloria, are very friendly, helpful and great to work with. Housekeeping can up their game a bit - they didn't replace shampoo, etc., and we ran out of toilet paper at 10 pm and only then realized they hadn't left an extra roll. Not good. But except for that we thought the place was wonderful - thanks for a great stay! Read less

Cosy hotel with very clean, spacious suites. Close to Yellowstone National Park. Little disappointed that all tableware is disposable and cups etc in rooms are also disposable all of which will end up either in landfill or incinerated. Would prefer a hotel with a more sustainable approach
