Gray Wolf Inn at West Yellowstone

Montana, Wild West

The hotel

For most, the location of Gray Wolf Inn & Suites would be enough: just two blocks from the west entrance of Yellowstone National Park, you’re minutes from its famous natural attractions. But that didn't stop the owners giving the inn a $1.4 million makeover, with everything from the rooms to the swimming pool getting a facelift. Welcoming guests all year round, so you can see the region in every season, the inn’s spacious rooms and suites are popular with families. The complimentary parking means road trips are easy, although many West Yellowstone highlights are within strolling distance, with Grizzly & Wolf Discovery Center just over the road, and Yellowstone Historic Center and Yellowstone IMAX Theatre two blocks away.

Although we had an amazing time in West Yellowstone, MT and the people/employees/staff at this Inn were incredibly nice, we were not impressed with this Inn and wished we would have stayed somewhere else. The walls are paper thin. There was mold in our bathroom. There were items (socks) in our room that belonged to past guests. The bathroom fan would not stay on for more than about 3-5 minutes at a time so the whole bathroom got very wet/steamed up during a shower. The toilet clogged up... twice. On our third night, we did complain about the people above us as they were jumping and running around their room starting at 9pm and would last until midnight (as previous nights). Management asked them to be quiet and they complied. The day after we informed them of the mold situation in the bathroom, most of the the mold was cleaned/painted over, but not all of it. We were given a toilet plunger to remedy the toilet ourselves... twice. The rooms (at least the one we were in) need some major work. The Inn is very dated and needs a lot of TLC. For the price ($439/night), we were disappointed to say the least. If it wasn't for the extremely nice staff at the hotel, we would have considered leaving and trying to stay at another facility. We did not use the pool, the laundry (washer/dryer), or the fitness center, but they all did look nice. The quick morning breakfast (continental) offered in the lobby was good, but get there early as it fills up fast and there is not a lot of room. Binoculars and walking sticks are available for use. Review your invoice at check out; there are many fees/additional charges that are not explained at booking and/or checking in. The Inn is right across the street from the Grizzley/Wolf Center. It was neat to hear the wolves howl in the evening. There is a shuttle (truck) shared with the Holiday Inn that will take you to the West Yellowstone airport if needed. The staff were professional and so nice. It would really be a wonderful place to stay with some major updates/room improvements. If those updates/improvements were all completed, we would not hesitate to stay at this hotel again in the future. Read less

We had a very comfortable stay here . This Lodge is very close to the West entrance to Yellowstone . We had a great time here . On our way into the Area we came across a Moose on the side of the road . And in the park one day we saw a Brown Bear with two Cubs and of course we (did not get close) to Mom ...

The room was clean and well maintained. The breakfast had very few choices and was too small to accommodate all of the guests. The hotel provides free internet, but the speeds are so slow it is nearly unusable. Watch out for hidden fees for amenities.

Great Location for access to Yellowstone. Across the street from the Grizzly and Wolf Center which is also worth a visit. Free continental breakfast and use of laundry facilities which was needed after long dusty hikes in the park. Clean and comfortable. Walking distance to the town of West Yellowstone.

We stayed for four nights at this hotel. Upon arriving at the hotel, I was told by two employees that my room had one less bed that what I had reserved. I KNEW that I had reserved beds for five and that was the reason why we had chosen this particular hotel. Finally, a manager came over and confirmed that the room did, in fact, have three beds. Not a big deal and it caused only a few minutes of stress, but it was representative of the service that we experienced throughout our stay. When we arrived in our room, there was a stuffed animal wolf waiting on the corner of our bed. Of course, our youngest son immediately got excited. Until we read the tag on it saying that you could keep it for $15.99. What a seriously tacky sales strategy! Housekeeping on the first day did not clean a sink, left us towels for only 4 people (again, we had 5 in our group), and left no extra toilet paper. Another day, the sheets on the sofa bed were untouched. The room itself was fine, as was the hotel. The location was great: blocks from Yellowstone’s west entrance and walking distance to lots of shopping and restaurants. Pros: Location Room Arrangement (we had 2 queen beds, a sofa sleeper, and a full kitchen) Comfy Beds Bath and Body Works toiletries Complimentary Use of Bikes and Binoculars A Super Sweet Afternoon/Evening Guest Host for the Hotel and Cabins Next Door (wish we had caught her name) Cons: Housekeeping Uninformed or Untrained Front Desk Employees Bad Breakfast Buffet (one of the worst that I have seen; did not eat after the first day) Read less
