Jaci's Safari and Tree Lodge

Madikwe, South Africa

The hotel

Utterly authentic, this safari sanctuary sits in the world-renowned Madikwe Game Reserve and takes you back to nature at every opportunity. Its walking safaris and game-drives are just the start (although with this malaria-free reserve home to the 'Big Five' and wild dogs, it’s a pretty spectacular start). You’ll also find yourself taking night drives for a spot of astronomy and tucking into fire-cooked meals under a blanket of stars. Or hanging out in the waterhole’s submerged Terrapin Hide, waiting for a unique photo-opportunity of bathing elephants. (Don’t worry, Jaci’s Lodge has its own pool, so you can give in to the urge for a dip yourself). All this before settling in for the night in one of the incredible suites. Perhaps a Treehouse Suite on stilts? Or a Starbed Suite, letting you sleep beneath the night skies?

Laid back luxury done at its best. I don’t need 10 members of staff per guest. What I truly appreciate are top professionals watching out for us, adapting to our needs (especially as we travel with children) and doing so to the highest standard and without intruding. This is exactly what you get at Jaci’s Safari Lodge. Charl was there from the outset making sure we had what we needed even when what we needed was not on the standard “menu”. And all the staff making sure it all happened with a genuine smile on their faces. By the way please do not judge by the pictures on the web. The whole lodge is a million times more intimate, beautiful and perfectly integrated with its gorgeous environment than the pictures show. Utter beauty. The safari suite where we stayed is just a dream, but we got to see one of the “smaller” rooms (the one with a starbed) and frankly what a hard choice! And then of course the game drives. Can’t judge the other guides but if they are 10% as good as Pierre, you have the best. Pierre is first of all an immensely knowledgeable and committed guide. You could tell he was always striving to find the next surprise for us, as if his only mission in life was to ensure we had the best safari experience. And he definitely achieved it. We left after three days wishing for thirty thousand more, it was almost addictive. He was an authority to respect in front of our children and at the same time fun and caring with them. And for us he was basically the person we would have chosen to be with, not just our guide. The exceptional game drive expertise was accompanied by a most interesting conversation, a great sense of humour, and, in sum, truly enjoyable company, something essential given you spend basically 8/9h a day with him! Pierre thank you, truly. I hope I can come back some day and in the meantime I will recommend Jaci’s Safari Lodge and Pierre to whomever cares to listen. I can’t speak so highly of almost anywhere else I have been. Truly special. Read less

Food was excellent for every meal, drink selection was varied and the staff couldn't do enough. Our tour guide -FJ was really hospitable, he ensured we saw the big 5, we had enough time and were fully informed at all times. The watering hole was wonderful and we wish we had more time to spend there. It's a long way from Johannesburg airport (4 hours) but worth it. We would go back today, and definitely will go back again, it really is a special place that I'd give 6 stars if I could! Read less
