Oleo Cancun Playa

Cancun, Mexico

Virgin rating

The hotel

Using minimalism to maximum effect, the sculptural ice-white architecture and matching monochrome interiors of Óleo Cancún Playa give it a calm chicness that’s a far cry from the buzz and colour of your setting — right at the start of the famously vibrant Cancún Hotel Zone. The dedication to ‘white’ is only really interrupted by flashes of blue — homage to the sea and surf just steps from the hotel. Overlooking the beach, the infinity pool adds a touch more turquoise, with the pool bar’s tropical-inspired cocktails adding their own shots of colour. The styling may be minimalist, but the features aren’t. You’ve got spa treatments, complimentary WiFi, an art workshop, and restaurant menus that take you from Japan to Mexico and Peru, with stops on the way for comfort food, international favourites, and bakery treats served up with Starbucks™ coffee.

Oleo Playa Boutique Resort On paper it’s in a great location. 15 mins from the airport and right on the beach. Unfortunately the sea was red flagged for the majority of our stay immediately outside the hotel but if you head right out of the back of the hotel it was yellow flags and much calmer about 1/2 a mile further down. Reception is too small when there’s a number of guests but the staff greet you nicely and fairly efficiently. Reception is the warmest place in the hotel though and when you’ve been travelling in clothes from a colder climate it’s pretty uncomfortable. The open doors make any air conditioning pointless. The room is nice, spacious and clean. Ample space for the 3 of us. Beach/Pool Towels are available to guests if you give them the card you get at check in (we had to go back and ask for the towel card as we weren’t given it) We were near the generator though and the constant noise from it makes opening the patio doors less pleasurable. Also no seating on the patio which would have been preferable. The food is okay but there isn’t much variety overall. For a fussy pre-teen it was a struggle. The waiting staff are lovely though and very attentive. The drinks service and being asked whilst you are at the beach/lounging if you want a drink is a nice touch. There needs to be about twice as many sun loungers as there are now. Far too few. When guests are sitting on the floor by the pool it should really be a wake up call that they need more. Sun beds are reserved very early by guests. By 7.30am they are all gone. The pool is pretty small. The photos taken are wide angle lenses for sure. The jacuzzi is full of children so not a relaxing environment but that’s because the pool isn’t really designed for them. It’s designed around the bar pool drinking. Room service is available at no extra cost as it easily accessible. Reception tell you to download the app but the chat on the app tells you to call 0. Not a major issue but it’s just not joined up. The coffee shop is lovely. A really nice touch and open an impressive number of hours. The shop is pretty expensive. 2 sharer packets of crisps and a small ice cream was close to £30. We lost our coats somewhere. Chat on the app just said there was none in the lost and found so I asked reception. The lady rang security, checked the lost and found and checked with house keeping. Nothing reported but said to come back tomorrow which was check out day. Asked as check out and the gentleman checking us out said he didn’t know and brushed off my question. The lady who I asked yesterday came free so I asked her and she checked all 3 again so service really does depend on the person you get. The hotel is nice but a little tired. It’s needs some attention. It was being worked on whilst I was there but it think it needs a bit more than it’s getting but maybe the works underway would be sufficient. Overall it’s clean though, just in need of some maintenance. Can’t comment on the entertainment as we didn’t see any. Day time is only a DJ that I could make out and not sure what the evening entertainment was. We all got the infamous Mexican tummy which collectively took the 3 of us out of action for a whole day. Something to be mindful of Read less

We enjoyed the fact that it was a pretty small resort because it made it easy to get to all the restaurants/ bars on site. Speaking of bars -there was always at least one open at any given time. Our favorite bartenders were Arely and Enrique at the lobby bar! They made the best drinks and had the best conversation. We hung out with them every night almost! As far as the food, the buffet was okay but the on-site restaurants were delicious! The pool area was lively but not to the point where you couldn't unwind. The beach area was well maintained and had great cabanas as well. Overall we loved this place and will be staying here again in the future! Read less

In addition, we enjoyed the snack bar/coffee shop! We took a day trip to Isla Mujeres through Amstar and a shopping trip to La Isla via public bus. Not sure we really got our money’s worth for an all inclusive but we did enjoy our stay! The entertainment was basically singers/music in the evening by the Lobby bar. The hospitality by the staff was the best part! The resort seemed tired in some spaces but it was always clean!!! Read less

The resort is not too big so the service is unbeatable. The drinks and food are better than a jumbo resort such as a secrets. Nice beach and a gorgeous view from inspiria suite. The pool is smaller but it is very clean and has shade at different times because of the buildings. The guests were very easy to converse with and everyone this resort attracted had some level of respect for each other. The entertainment was top notch. Quality professional entertainment every night and the pool team entertainment was of the best I’ve experienced in twenty years traveling. My only con is the resort needs some maintenance but this is very true for almost any resort I’ve stayed at. Read less
