The hotel

Renowned for its quality and service, the OBLU by Atmosphere at Helengeli brings with it vibrant and refreshing interiors and design and a new island resort concept. You will benefit from the latest in hotel luxuries alongside the timeless treats a Maldivian island guarantees. Treats like diving at the 5-star PADI dive centre, snorkelling in crystal waters, relaxing by a choice of swimming pools (including an adults-only pool in a secluded area of the island) and strolling on sugar white sands that have barely seen a footprint. In a quiet spot on the less-developed northeast rim of the atoll, the OBLU has an exotic and unique house reef, home to pelagic fish, just metres from its shoreline, so it’s a good job the use of snorkelling gear’s included in your all-inclusive plan.

My wife and I spent a week here over the Valentines week. This is our third visit to the Maldives and by a country mile our favorite resort. The people (as always) were so friendly and the island itself is beautiful. The house reef is incredible. I swam with black tip sharks, stingray, moray eel, box fish, squid and dozens of other beautiful marine life. The food and drink is easily the best we’ve experienced at an AI resort. Plenty of choice and always very tasty. The trip included a meal at the Grill which was nice. We were also entitled to a 45 minute massage in the beautiful spa which was amazing. I also went on an included fishing trip and caught 2 fish which was pretty cool! At the end of the trip they throw the unused bait into the harbor and there are loads of nurse sharks waiting. Absolutely amazing to see them all. There are two swimming pools (one adult only) and they even had an inflatable pool for babies which I thought was a nice touch for people with very young children. There is a free popcorn machine to help yourself to whilst you enjoy a beer or cocktail. Our only gripe was the DJ in the evening played Indian music pretty much non-stop until we asked for some western tunes. The following night was much better and loads of people danced. However the nights after migrated back to all Indian again and at a loud level. I’m all for experiencing other cultures but Indian dance music every night got a bit boring as we don’t know the music and can’t speak the language in the songs. But this is minor. We will definitely be returning to Oblu as it’s a fantastic location with great food/drink and run by lovely people. Thank you Oblu and see you again soon. Read less

We were originally booked for Oblu Sangeli and only 3 days before our departure we discovered they were on lockdown for COVID. They did not inform us, there was no communication whatsoever. When we called no one answered the phone, no one responded to emails or to WhatsApp. Out of desperation I contacted Helegeli to get help. It was Kasun, the assistant reservation manager for Helengeli who responded and told me that Sangeli was on lockdown. Perhaps Sangeli had an alternate plan awaiting us upon arrival but as I was feeling very insecure and disappointed by their blatant lack of care for guests with timely communication I felt the need to make a decision on the spot. Kasun was gracious enough to ensure our reservation for Sangeli was cancelled and then reserved a deluxe beach villa for us at Helengeli. He was friendly, helpful and gave me great confidence that a room would be waiting for us upon arrival. When we did arrive a representative was waiting for us at the airport and escorted us to the speedboat transfer which was shared with other travelers. About 50 minutes later we arrived at Helegeli. It was beautiful. We settled in very quickly. I believe Sangeli provides more privacy and luxury in the accommodations which is why we chose it in the first place but Helegeli was very comfortable and enjoyable. We stayed for a total of 10 nights, and for the last two nights we moved to water villa for a different experience -- I highly recommend both the beach and water villas -- mix it up if you can. As is mentioned in the other reviews the currents around the island can be very strong so it's not the best for swimming. Lots of dead coral close to shore which makes going barefoot uncomfortable to pack your dive booties. The snorkeling is lovely and we had a nice time kayaking as well. We spent most of our days around the adult pool which was quiet, calm, and very relaxing. The food is very good with lots of fresh local reef fish daily, delicious curries and other cuisines. Drinks are very nice as well. The staff is very friendly and attentive. Ange at the bar was always smiling and helpful and Kasun as I mentioned before was very kind and checking in with us over the course of our stay. Our objective was to unwind, rest, relax and restore. Mission accomplished thanks to Helengeli. Also it's important to note that it felt very safe on the island. Staff wore masks but the guests did not. Everything felt clean and well cared for, health safety was never an issue. And we were able to take a PCR test on the island before we left. Read less

My first trip and holiday in a year, due to Covid. Any reservations about a holiday in this crazy world were quickly set aside as we arrived in this amazing resort. It is really spacious and whilst it was busy, it never felt crowded. There are so many different areas that you can relax in. We went for 4 nights (5 days) and it felt like we had been relaxing for a week. All the staff are amazing, really friendly, from the team keeping the gardens lush, to the bar tenders mixing cocktails, to the restaurant staff greeting us every day. The main buffet restaurant, has a wide variety of food, and we were never bored of the choices. I personally loved the fresh sashimi at lunchtime and my husband enjoyed the curry choices (breakfast, lunch and dinner). The deluxe rooms are spacious and very clean. The bed was really comfortable and the AC good. You can take your shoes off at the start of the holiday and not put them back on if you like. Sandy paths and beach front walks a must. The reef is directly in front of the property. You can take your own snorkel gear, or borrow from the well stocked dive centre. It was top notch gear. We saw lots of fish, turtles and small black reef sharks, just snorkeling off the beach. Dolphins also visited a couple of times for an early breakfast display. Two pools, one adults only. Gym is small but good and a there is a lap pool. The spa is amazing - recommend you plan for two visits at least. We missed the curry cooking class- you learn in the morning and make your own lunch. Highly recommended by a couple sitting next to us on our last lunch. We had a covid test organised by the resort and it was all very professional. I can't recommend this resort enough. Incredible, relaxing, friendly and safe paradise. Read less
