Shangri-La's Rasa Sayang Resort and Spa

Penang, Malaysia

The hotel

Rasa Sayang takes its name from an old Malay folk song that means ‘a feeling of love’ – exactly what you’ll experience when you arrive here! A beautiful resort, it also enjoys a luxurious setting in 30-acres of lush gardens, framed by majestic ancient rain trees. Some of the world’s most recognisable names have holidayed here, including celebrity author Barbara Cartland and the former King of Cambodia. A definite attraction is CHI, The Spa, the largest and most luxuriously appointed in Penang. There’s also award-winning cuisine served at the Ferringi Grill, which boasts a wine cellar and cigar menu, or indulge in buffet delights at the Spice Market Café.

Hotels in Penang have a steep learning curve to change behaviours to comply with SOPS. Been a regular to this hotel and was looking forward to a good rest after being locked down at home for 2 months during the MCO. However, what was supposed to be an enjoyable break turned out to be a nightmare, starting from the moment I entered the lobby to check in and my check out date. I noticed that the hotel has taken the SOP and social distancing measures lightly. No one was at the main entrance to take my temperature when I entered the lobby , the lobby was packed with humans waiting to check in, no 1m distance was observed at the que to check in and hardly any visitor was seen wearing a face mask. When queried to the front line manager, the answer was "we cannot ask the guests to stand 1m apart as don't want to offend them, moreover Penang was a green zone ". What a lame excuse! Can't accept this explanation as it is the responsibility of the hotel management to ensure safety of the guests especially so when covid 19 is still not fully contained. Even if penang is currently designated as a green zone, with hundreds of guests all over the country staying at this hotel with no social distancing observed all the time, the probability of covid 19 spreading to the hotel guests cannot be discounted and taken lightly. Waited almost 2.5 hours to get the room ready, by that time it is almost 6pm. Pools are crowded most of the time with no effort to control the crowd. Guests were seen spitting in the pool and no action was taken by the pool attendant to remind the guests to practice proper hygiene. Appears that the hotel management is eager to quickly reopen the hotel without full consideration on crowd management and proper safety protocols in place. Throughout my stay, I observed that most of the time, there were no one at the main door entrance to take the tempteture of the guests entering the hotel. Seems that the hotel was understaffed as service quality has deteriorated significantly since my last visit early this year. Will hesitate to return to this hotel although it used to be my favorite holiday hotel in penang. Read less

Shangri-la is normally an outstanding experience but at Rasa Sayang, we were given two rooms at check in that were reported to be "hill view" but they were in fact facing the car park and main road (and monkey crap) which really diminished the whole hotel experience. Hotel, next time, say what it actually is: "facing onto the car park and main… Read more
