Six Senses Samui

Koh Samui, Thailand

The hotel

When you arrive at the Six Senses Samui the view is at once exhilarating and strangely familiar. The sweeping vista of palm-clustered islands and shimmering seas brings to mind all the fantasies we have of the Orient's beaches. The resort is made up of a stunning collection of bamboo-clad villas looking out over the Gulf of Thailand. At Six Senses there are only villas, most with a private swimming pool with polished wooden floor interiors. Following the renovation, all villas are fully enclosed and air-conditioned so there are no "open-air spaces" as such and the bathroom and bedroom have a sliding door that separates them. The restaurants and bars are open pavilions, deriving their aesthetic from the communal longhouses of traditional river communities. The view, the architecture, the style and even the temperature intentionally immerse the guest in the location. This is back to nature – without a hint of roughing it. Six Senses Samui gives you everything, including a comprehensive spa that offers every conceivable treatment in Asia.

There is no outside shower for the villa pool. The villa ocean scenery is meh. Half of the view is others villa. There is a wood burr at the villa pool. However, the main and beach pools are clean with awesome scenery. Main pool is large and clean. There are different color at the main pool floor tiles. This place have a lot of activity to do e.g. yoga class, mocktail class, harvesting eggs and feed the goats. Breakfast is plain without variety of food. Complimentary ice cream is awful. The size of ice cream is smaller than a penny. Nice staff, especially GEM and villa host. Read less

I spent three wonderful nights at the Six Senses Samui recently and was blown away by it - topping the list are the gorgeous landscaping, amazing service, one of the prettiest infinity pool with sunset views, and most importantly, the privacy and tranquility this resort offers. It is truly a very special property. The high level of service started even before check-in when I received an email asking me about any specific requests - I asked for a memory gel pillow and at least 3L of water in my room daily (and true enough over my stay, they 3L water rule was thoroughly enforced by staff, and I never had to call for additional water throughout my stay - amazing). The room I stayed was the entry level Hideaway Villa (only this category has no private pool) and it was very spacious. It is split across two floors with entryway and the open air patio and lounge chaise on the lower floor. Upon entry after passing this patio, you climb up the stairs to the main air-conditioned room, with a gorgeous bed (mattress is on the firm side) and mosquito netting in the middle of the room. Turndown sees staffs setting up the mosquito net and pulling down all the shades. There is a minibar at the study table behind the bed with kettle, TWG, coffee capsules and the coffee maker (from a very very good coffee brand that is not Nespresso, which is a good thing). Also, you can requests for items in your minibar along with the types of Tea, intensity of the coffee, and also, fresh milk bottled daily in a glass bottle. In another corner of the main room is a very comfortable daybed with bright green fabric to add a gorgeous dash of pop to the wooden interior - in fact, I think the resort really excels in using color accents on cushions, seats, and sunbeds to inject dashes of colors and excitement throughout the resort, which I absolutely adore. The large bathroom adjoins the room and has a huge carved-in bath tub that looks out onto the grounds of the resort and sea. There is also an outdoor shower with two shower heads next to each other, so couples can shower together (one rain shower and a second hand-held one). the toiletries are beautifully scented with Lemongrass - i think, and there is also aloe gel and insect repellant as well. The accompanying vanity are standard, and the toothpaste is a herbal thai brand which is quite nice, although the hotel can probably take a step further for sustainability by offering toothpaste tablets like at the Mandarin Oriental Bangkok so that no tubes are used. The yukata bathrobes are also comfy although mine has a hole at the back probably due to wear and tear. The highlight of the hotel is definitely the gorgeous grounds, with the cliff inifinity pool a must to lounge around (why settle for your villa pool when the view and pool here is much better?). Evening time, you can see the sun set on the left but sadly, my stay was marked up cloudy skies throughout, although first night was ok. There is also a smaller pool at the new Beach Club that the GM initiated, which was opened only in Feb of 2020. This is definitely a ‘trendy’ spot and there is also a beach cafe for lunch and drinks in the day. I also had dinner at the cliff restaurant (yummy Thai food) and also at the famed Dine in the Rocks, which features 3, 5 or 7-course dinners. The Uruguay-born chef is also new at the resort, and I spoke with him during breakfast to realize that he had previously worked in Spain and as such, his creations are definitely reminiscent of the avant-garde creations you get in Spain. One particular dish with mushroom greatly reminded me of Disfrutar in Barcelona, with the play on texture, smell and plating. All, I am amazed by the service at Six Senses and nothing beats the privacy for guests here. If you are the discerning type who wants a luxe low-key resort without the flash, this is the perfect place for you. Read less

It was almost like a broadway show where everything was perfectly orchestrated for example our pickups (was hilly so at night we asked for a bucky to pick us up to the restaurants), breakfast, cleaning schedules, a movie night, a secluded beach bar ... I mean EVERYTHING! Kudos to all the willing staff there. Your hard work is definitely paid off :-) Read less
