The Algonquin Hotel

Midtown, New York

The hotel

One of New York’s prized historic buildings, The Algonquin first opened its doors to the public on November 22, 1902. Attracting the glitterati with its luxury accommodation and Time Square location, it’s been popular ever since and not just with humans! Yes, you read that right – several cats have also called The Algonquin home – each named Hamlet or Matilda according to gender and afforded the same hospitality as everyone else. Guest rooms are second to none in the city, effortlessly combining old world elegance with cutting edge amenities and stunning city views. There’s a fitness centre for the enthusiast or simply order a cocktail from the iconic Blue Bar, one of the most desirable meeting places in NYC and indulge in a bit of people watching instead. The Round Table Restaurant is another sought-after destination, once the haunt of literary and theatrical notables it is now one of the places to see and be seen.

One thing that never ever changed is the staffing and their polite professional approach to welcoming guests. May the new reopening welcome back past and new guests with why some of us return.....good memories. I love the back king corner rooms when traveling alone and if with family a suite. Rooms are cozy, guests are polite enough to not slam doors and very clean. See you all in 2022. If you are taking the train in very close to the station. Read less

I spent many years as a kid at this famed, historic cultural landmark and gathering place. My family ran it for decades. When I saw photos of the recent renovation, I was shocked and heartbroken, Truly shaken and sad. Whoever made the decision to paint all the woodwork white and whoever approved this decision should never again work on the renovation of an historic property. I wish the new manager well, but the place I knew is no more. I hope the music, cocktails and h'ordeuvres he introduces when Covid restrictions lift will help bring back some of the vitality, warmth and character that this legendary hotel once abundantly had. There is nothing "classic" or "historic" left in this hotel after the recent remodel ruined the lobby. The lobby has been remodeled with an effort to remove any ambiance or elegance or sense of place that existed in the past at this historic hotel. The lobby now could easily be mistaken for any chain motel on the Nebraska interstate. The music is canned elevator music. There are no food or beverages available except coffee in the lobby. It did not appear that rooms have been updated, wallpaper, carpets, paint, window shades need help. Some of the staff is friendly and helpful and some exhibit no training or expertise in hospitality. This hotel was once a joy to visit now it is an enormous disappointment. Read less

The staff in this hotel are wonderful, and they are the only reason this review has any positives. Unfortunately, the Algonquin has lost all of its historic elegance. This was one of the last hotels in New York that hadn’t been turned into condos or gutted beyond recognition. No more. The recent renovations have seen the beautiful dark woodwork painted white, and all of the warm, elegant furniture tossed. I thought we were past the trend where we paint over elegant woodwork. I really can’t understand why Marriott did this. Anybody who wants a sterile, cold, pseudo mid century modern lobby can choose from one of the thousands of new (and cheaper) hotels across the city. The Algonquin was such an authentic New York space, and I would always pay a premium for it. Never again. Read less

Appalled that we were not notified that the bar and restaurant are closed when booking here. The website and Bonvoy app still show the regular dining options as available today, with open hours, etc - totally false. There’s also nothing in the confirmation e-mail about it. When we travel, we tend to end the evening in the hotel bar for a nightcap and potentially take a beverage to the room. Especially when in NYC, we don’t like to be wandering around looking for a spot to have a nightcap. We booked this place at over $600 a night specifically because we like the Blue Bar and thought it would enhance our 4 evenings here. But no - nothing is open. Upon complaining first at the desk and then calling the Marriott Titanium line ( we’re Titanium for life), we received a call from the front desk attendant - not the Manager - saying that they were giving us $30 credit per night on the room. Are you kidding me? Giving a less than 5% credit for a completely disrupted experience is pathetic. Great that the desk people tried to be helpful, but management didn’t even bother to call directly, though were clearly on site. We are obviously Marriott fans, but totally disgusted by this experience. Read less
