Continue to improve their customer service. Fantastic buffet breakfast with wide range of dishes. Even the restaurant menu was upgraded. However, was a bit disappointed that my room was not ready even after 3.00 pm. Room facilities needs improvement. Air conditioning blower fan was too loud and the ceiling fan speed control was not working.

As a status member with Shangri-La, we didn't get an upgrade, but we received welcome amenities (which arrived very quickly). The staff at check-in were very helpful, and this was a common theme throughout the hotel. We also got late check-out, which was useful. The bedroom was OK, with a nice bathroom.WiFi was the worst of the five hotels we stayed at in Malaysia - really not good enough for an expensive hotel. The Spice Market cafe was excellent, and the food was fresh and tasty. Breakfast was also good, with a wide variety. The pools were all very good, with plenty of sunbeds around. The beach was great, but at high tide there is very little space. Good spot for sunset, however! There are vendors on the beach who are slightly annoying, but unfortunately this is the case in lots of places now. There are a number of shops nearby, including the night market and big chains (McDonalds / Subway, etc.). All in all, we had a good stay, however for the price I don't feel like this was a great value hotel. We probably would look elsewhere if we returned to Penang. Read less

But the room provided to me, the sea view was blocked by the tree in front of it. The room is spacious, the toilet comes with a bath tub n a separate shower stall. Now, the standard of the housekeeping varies. On some days, the bathroom amenities was well stocked up but on some not... some days, the housekeeper folded my pj n jacket but on some not. The air conditioning was alright but on the last night of my stay, it was freezing despite the thermostat on it saying 28 degrees. I have to switch it off and switch on the fan. We had our breakfast and lunch at the Spice cafe. The spread of the buffet was so so, on the first 2 days, there were another big group there for a meeting. The variety was there. The moment, the group left, the spread was terrible. For 5 star hotel, I will expect it to be better. The facilities like the outdoor pools are great, many lounge chairs to sit by and enjoy the sea breeze. It’s unfortunate that I don’t have the time to use. Read less

We stayed for six nights in this lovely resort. We were met by the hotel at Penang Airport and taken to this amazing resort which is about a 45minute journey. We stayed in the Rasa wing in an amazingly large room which was very well appointed - though a couple of lightbulbs had blown which were repaired when we pointed this out - surely the housekeeping ought to check on the bulbs on a daily basis? Guests of the Rasa wing enjoy their own swimming pool and afternoon tea and evening cocktails and canapés - both were good and meant that you did not need to dine out every evening. The grounds of the hotel are extremely well kept and nicely mature. We preferred the buffet breakfast to the a la carte breakfast that was on offer to Rasa wing guests. The problem with the a la carte menu is that 99% of the items centred around eggs - fine if you like them, but I don't! On the other hand the buffet breakfast catered for all diets and tastes. All of the staff were polite, keen to please, and very helpful. Read less

We had a very relaxing holiday In Malaysia. As part of our holiday we stayed in Shangri-La. Special thanks to Rasa Sayang. I make here our detailed review. Garden wing: We had done the check-in with their app (they recommend to use this in order to avoid waiting). Check-in was therefore very smooth. We came late and were in any case the only guests at check-in counter at that time. Garden view room was in ok condition (8/10). Beds, pillows and blankets were very good. Bathroom bit dated but functional. Our idea was to stay first in basic room (first night) and to upgrade to better Rasa wing thereafter. Rasa wing Benefits of staying there are numerous. I believe the biggest may be the calmness. It is much more peaceful. No kids running around. Guests were mainly well behaving westerners (British, Australian especially), Asians (lot of Japanese) and few Arab couples. Room was good. Not huge but functional. Condition 8.5/10. No complaints. We had the deluxe room with garden access (small private garden 20 something m2). This was handy as we could get to both swimming pools & garden quickly + I could read book outside next to our room. I also picked free drinks to our garden. When we entered our room we had first some smell of mosquito repellent, but that disappeared. Outdoor area had some tiny black squirrels, not so noisy birds (crow family and pigeons) and lizards (small to large water monitors & tiny gecko at least). Surprisingly zero mosquito and ants. It is ideal to avoid getting Rasa wing rooms which have windows/balcony towards the much noisier Garden wing (main pool area). The view is less nice as well. Housekeeping was good and friendly, but sometimes bit slow. Rasa wing had better toiletries (L’Occitane) than the Garden wing. Swimming pools: Garden wing pool is much bigger and kids do swim & play here. Deepest point is 2.2m. It is noisier and harder to relax here. Nothing special, but it is ok. They have lifeguard, but with kids you have to watch your own kids in this pool all the time. For some reason most guests must stay under high UV sun(?). Service at pool bar is ok and it has good cover from the sun. Water monitor lizards may be scary for some, but to me it was nice to see some of them also jumping into water and swimming next to us. Pools were well maintained and water was gentle to our eyes. Rasa wing pool has no kids policy which they do enforce. Well behaving kids below 16 years old are not allowed to swim or stay in the area. Enough sun cover. Pool is smaller, but ok. I find the space bit too compact. You are quite close to other Rasa wing guests. The western guests are quiet and and bit older. Asian guests were mainly bit younger couples. Service was good. Beach: It is actually public. Quite narrow standard beach. Water quality is average. Did not spot rubbish excluding our last day. Small swimming area has been separated. Hotel has nothing to do with any beach activities which are carried out by private vendors. There are no beds or seating at the beach. I did not spot any alive jellyfish. Just two dead ones (and they looked harmless species). Sunset is very pretty and many couples were watching that. Garden area between hotel and the sea: The garden area is nice and green. Instead taking sunshine at pools you can stay in this relaxing garden area overlooking the sea. Plenty of palm trees giving you natural cover from the intense sunshine. You have plenty of sun beds and they provide towels as well. Gym: Quite small in size but fully functional with good equipment. Breakfast: Is good at Spice Market. We liked this as they have full breakfast buffet. Spice Market has large selection which caters well to any taste (Malay, Chinese, Indian and European). I missed fresh mango, but otherwise they had very good fruit selection! When we got in early (8:30) we did not have to wait for table. It can busy at times, if you come after 9:15. It is always quite noisy and less relaxing. Plenty of young kids here. After first few days we had all our breakfast at Feringgi Grill. They offer a la carte menu plus sort of small scale buffet. This works really ok (young kids are likely more suited to Spice Market). I liked their smoked salmon with French toast, salmon roe, Hollandaise sauce and poached egg. Nice. Omelettes & scrambled eggs were also very good. Special notice to Chakchouka eggs! This was brilliant (and a new dish for me). Pancakes were tasty. Noodle soup was really bit too bland. Nasi Lemak is also ok (but really very small portion so you can take this as a side dish). Roti canai with chicken curry was superb (but heavy). Fruit selection was ok. Again no mango, but super sweet jackfuit and water guava were tasty. Honey melon was sweeter than in Spice Market. Their service was very good and friendly. If I could not find something they would try to get me what I was looking for. What else? Ok their espresso was at times too bitter. To sum it up: Feringgi at Rasa wing offers most relaxing breakfast in a peaceful environment. Very few kids ++ Rasa Wing Lounge Privileges... Soft drinks are free whole day at Rasa Wing (I picked often from pool). Afternoon tea from 3 to 4pm: Pretty nice. Jasmin tea was not remarkable. Sandwiches were ok. Scones ok. Service ++. Some Asian kids were bit noisy. Some adults also used phone bit loudly (shame). Cocktails - selected free drinks from 5:30 to 7pm: Good service. Ok drink selection in general. Champagne was tasty and glasses were filled promptly (thanks). Food selection was bit underwhelming. Well behaving guests. Families with kids are assigned into own area (right side of entrance with bit worse service in my opinion). Some Asian tourists did not respect the dress guideline (flip flops and sports gear). When the manager was present the service was faultless (and when not service level dropped a bit). Overall we were pretty happy with our most relaxing stay. I personally needed a short break from busy corporate life. We got what we had expected to get = 4.5 star stay for good price value. Thanks to good breakfast, afternoon tea, cocktails and small food I did not really need a dinner on most of the evenings. There is a nearby hawker Long Beach, which has ~ 20 stalls for decent Asian food (inexpensive and something for everybody). Final verdict: Rasa Sayang does still deliver despite being middle-aged (respect to the middle-aged). I could stay in Rasa wing again where the service is very good. There is a different atmosphere at Rasa wing. Hotel was also flexible with our late check-out. Read less
