Atlantis is a huge property that comprises several very different areas. The Cove, together with the Reef, is the newest and most upscale area with its own pool area for adults only. It’s suites are modern and sleek. Other members of our group who stayed at the Royal reported dated and musty rooms. The Royal boasts the largest lobby area with a must see sunken aquarium. Together with the attached casino, it has a Vegas vibe. There are several pool areas, but most have cheap, uncomfortable lounges without pads. The aquatic park is great fun with areas for toddlers, slides that range from moderate to extreme, and a lazy river with a couple of rapids. The beaches are beautiful white sand with protected areas. There are many restaurants on property, all of which will cause sticker shock. At the upscale eateries entrees generally start at $40. Everything is a la carte. A burger with any add ons will run you $20; pizza at $7 per slice. Every tab adds a 15% tip and a Large VAT. A drink on the beach will set you back $19. With all the taxes and gratuities added, a Cove suite will be $500 per night. We spend a lot of time at Cabo and Riviera Maya all-inclusives, and were struck by one big difference here. In Mexico, we are made to feel welcome and appreciated. At the best resorts, nobody walks past without a smile and a “Buenas Dias”. Not so at Atlantis. Although we did meet some nice staff, most were, at best, indifferent. When asked reasonable questions, some were borderline rude. This happened with us and others trying to use the shuttle service on property which lacks adequate signage. Most staffers didn’t seem happy and we all felt it. Staffers were more likely to interact with each other than with guests. We do want to recognize Detra, the manager of the BBQ, who specially accommodated us when we arrived at closing. In our discussion about the staff attitudes it was clear she understands the challenge. We strongly suggest that Atlantis create a position of Brand Ambassador, tasked with training and guest relations across all departments and promote Detra. Read less

This is our 4th vacation at the resort. While we enjoyed our stay, we definitely noticed an overall decline in the property and facilities. As always, the staff was friendly and professional throughout the resort. We stayed at the Cove and it was beautiful and it was well kept. We enjoyed the beach bag and flip flop gifts. What was different about this stay, was that the pool and beach areas were more crowded than in previous years. After speaking to other guests we learned that wristbands were not being checked and people from other buildings were using the pool and beach. The problem comes in when there are not enough chairs for the paying guests. As a result, in order to secure a chair, we had to run downstairs early in the morning everyday to have somewhere to sit. The kids had a good time at the Waterpark, though we noticed a definite decline in the overall grounds and maintenance. The river rapids and conveyor belt stopped working for short periods of time twice during our stay and the power tower slides were similarly out of service one afternoon as well. The main issue with the resort comes down to food. We are a family of 4 - 2 adults, one teenager and one child. We had 5 dinners during our stay: Mosaic buffet at the Cove, Nobu, Carmine’s, Marina Pizza and Chopstix. We found that for the most part, unless you pay $300 per dinner, the quality is pretty awful. Our only truly good meal was at Nobu and it was extremely expensive. Our worst meal by far, was at Chopstix. We had never planned to go there, but the concierge accidentally booked us at the wrong restaurant and we were unable to get in anywhere else. What really infuriated me was the fact that no one was willing to help us correct their mistake and find a place to eat. Finally, someone at Chopstix took pity on us and squeezed us in. The staff there was very kind in accommodating us, but we found the chicken and beef to be inedible. The vegetable items were fine. This was a $200 meal. The beach by the Cove was really beautiful. Much nicer than I remembered in the past. My son had a lot of fun at Crush the teen club and my daughter and I really loved the sea lion interaction we had. The resort is a very special place. If they can fix things up a bit around the property, offer more food options and better train staff in customer relations, it could be great again. With Baha Mar nearby building a water park, Atlantis needs to step up their game to compete. Read less

So after being to Atlantis several times on a cruise we decided we wanted some more time at the hotel. We found out that the Cove was the best they had so we booked a suite for 4 days. First of all the hotel recommended a transport. It ended up being a bus that stopped at several different hotels. Do NOT take that stupid bus. It is the same price as a cab. I thought it was exclusive to the hotel. It isn't. Check in was easy and out room was very nice. Except hate when there is an except one of the TV remotes didn't work but that was not that important except we could shut it off. Plug pulled end of issue. Second the phone didn't work to call for help and last the toilet would not flush unless you held the handle down. Four days later still waiting for them to fix it. The pools and beach are gorgeous but let's say you get hungry. At the pool a hodog a hamburger and a bottle of water $50 now I am not cheap and didn't expect the place to be but come on at least have an awesome hotdog and hamburger. It was terrible. Anytime you get something every bill weather you get it yourself or have someone bring it there will be a 15% service charge and then they charge an additional 12% VAT (tax) so almost anytime you order a cocktail and a small bite expect to spend $100+. Ok dinner now if you like to eat on the grounds (fine dining wise) again you will spend outrageous sums of money for food that is at best average. Now we did eat on night at the Graycliff. It was unbelievable! Expensive but worth every penny. My overall rating of the hotel not worth the money but if money isn't an issue and you don't mind mediocre than this is the place for you. Notice I did not mention gambling. I do not gamble so I did not rate an experience based on that. Read less
