The hotel

Once in a lifetime you stay somewhere truly exceptional. Where every detail’s polished to perfection – from the Tiffany tea plates to the fleet of Rolls Royces. That’s The Peninsula. Transporting you back to the glittering 1920s, Hong Kong’s oldest hotel still promises timeless traditions, from being welcomed by white-liveried ‘Peninsula Pages’ to taking afternoon tea in the lobby, where dainty finger sandwiches, pastries and scones are served to the delicate sounds of The Lobby Strings. They also transport you deep into local life, with The Peninsula Academy providing experiences from dim sum making to caviar courses, and from helicopter tours to pastry chef classes for children. And, after all the excitement, you can retreat to your luxury guest room, perhaps overlooking the harbour, in the heart of Tsim Sha Tsui.

We were looking forward to afternoon tea at the iconic Peninsula hotel but we really shouldn't have bothered. The service was simply awful. We were "welcomed" by being told when we would need to leave the table. The table we were sat at was not even laid when we arrived. It was ages before anyone arrived with a menu for choice of tea and then, astonishingly, the waiter was unable to tell me which of the teas on the menu were green teas. He went away and then 5 minutes later came back with another tea menu which contained the same teas and he still couldn't tell me which, if any, were green teas. I chose at random and fortunately it was very pleasant. It was well over 30 minutes before we actually got anything to eat or drink. The food, when it arrived, was delicious, but unfortunately the exasperation of the preceding half hour detracted from the enjoyment. Read less

This hotel is fantastic. I rarely write reviews, even though I travel probably 3-6 months a year, but this hotel merits the effort to write a review. I just left the hotel after a 4-Night stay. This hotel is fantastic. I rarely write reviews, even though I travel probably 3-6 months a year, but this hotel merits the effort to write a review. I just left the hotel after a 4-Night stay. First the basics: it’s in an excellent location overlooking Victoria Harbor and the island of Hong Kong. I had a view over the harbor and the HK skyline, and could watch the Lightshow from my room - fantastic views. The room was large, well organized, with all sorts of amenities. The restaurants and food are excellent. The hotel is obviously extremely well-managed, which is apparent as soon as you pull up - it has an excellent staff, from the people working the (very busy) front door, the doormen/women, the reception and check-in, the wait staff, the housekeeping staff, the staff in the spa and pool - all very attentive, prompt, responsive and polite. But I must make a special mention of the concierge team - their service is quite simply the best I have ever experienced. From a personal tour of the hotel archives when they learned of my interest in historic hotels, to recommending and helping me plan my daily sightseeing, they were always helpful. What really blew me away though, was when I realized that I had forgotten to pack something that I needed, and asked if they could tell me where I could go to a pharmacy to find it. It turns out this item is not used in Hong Kong and is difficult to find, so the concierge staff diligently researched, then went and got the item and delivered it to my room. I hadn’t asked them to do this, nor expected it. That is the level of service that The Peninsula provides. It is simply top-notch, and they set the standard. Thank you, Peninsula, for an outstanding stay! Read less

My daughter and me have just had the pleasure of staying at what has the reputation of being one of, if not the best hotel on the planet. And within seconds of arriving at around 9am fresh off an overnight flight from London it was clear that reputation was so well deserved. On asking the front desk if we could leave our bags till check in time we were quickly told no need as our room was ready for us and the reception lady took us up to our room to show us all the top notch facilities. And what a great room it was, well actually 4 rooms, a massive bedroom come sitting room, a hallway as big as most European business hotel rooms, a beautiful bathroom with the biggest bath I'v ever seen and best hotel shower I've ever used and a separate toilet room. Easily the best hotel room I have ever had. Breakfast at the Verandah was great, everything from a full English to classic Chinese by way of continental with fresh baked pastries (or any combination of those) was on offer and all of the highest quality and freshness. Afternoon tea in the lobby also a delight again delicious and beautifully presented with great live music from the band I also heard so many times passing the arcade level in the lift. But what makes the Grande Dame of the Far East even more special is the staff, attentive but never intrusive always greet you when passing and nothing seems too much trouble to ask them. I certainly know where I will be staying on my next visit to Hong Kong. Read less

I am writing to express my appreciation to the spa team. It is my second time spending my time with you. Upon arrival, I received a warm welcome back from your team and it indeed made my day:) And I wanna say thank you to the female receptionist who greeted me whenever I passed by the reception, escorted me to the spa lounge to use the facilities and the swimming pool for the poolside meal after treatment. It was so warm and sweet of her to do so. Thank you for being so attentive! Besides, I wanna say a big thank you to Pinky. She gave a very good massage and I felt asleep during that as too comfy. I indeed like how professional she is as she suggested me to amend to facial treatment after noticing my skin situation and changed tea to the ginger one as I had my hair wet during the treatment time. Thank you Pinky🩵 On top of that, I wanna express my gratitude toward a gentleman (with a pair of glasses on) working in poolside restaurant. I ordered fish for my main course and turned out it didn’t taste as I expected (probably is me didn’t get used to the taste only). I took a few bites then left it aside. The colleague intended to collect the dish but noticed such and asked me if everything was okay. I hesitated and said probably is my problem that didn’t get used to the taste. Didn’t plan to ask to change to another dish as I had it half and did not think it is a good idea to do so. And then he offered to change to a new dish for me proactively. I was so impressed as I didn’t expect that. Thank you so much for asking! I appreciate how everyone in the team is willing to take extra miles and paying extra attention to details so as to enhance the guest’s experience. It indeed brings delight to me that decided to create more pen moments with you all in the future as I like the service with temperature which makes you guys so different from other hotels. Thank you so much once again and look forward to visiting you very soon! Read less

This is the best hotel in the world. The flagship hotel of the Hong Kong and Shanghai Hotels. They only have less than 15 hotels at the moment, but what they lack in quantity, they definitely make it up in quality. This is what a 5 Star hotel should always be. Great ambience, outstanding service and delicious food,
