Conrad Maldives Rangali Island

Maldives, Indian Ocean

The hotel

At this oasis of luxury, you can relish two palm-fringed tropical islands, as well as a separate Spa Retreat. The resort is linked by a 500-metre footbridge — stroll across and admire the underwater life from above or take a dhoni or beach buggy if that's more your style. Choose from three different luxury resort experiences: beautifully furnished Beach Villas on the main Rangalifinolhi Island, home to the main pool, kids pool and water sports centre; amazing, thatch-roofed Water Villas perched on stilts over the shallow waters off Rangali Island, where you'll also find the Quiet Zone pool; or luxurious Retreat Water Villas, with their own treatment room and jacuzzi, part of the only Destination Spa in the Maldives. You'll also be spoilt for choice when it comes to dining, with eight restaurants across the two islands. Set five metres below the surface of the Indian Ocean is the underwater restaurant, Ithaa, with fantastic 180º views of the surrounding coral gardens and serving exquisite European cuisine.

Anyone who is reading this review has surely researched not only this property but the Maldives in general. Pictures don't do either justice and I can honestly say that this place is everything you would want and more. Even though travel in the world of COVID is a massive and unpredictable pain, it actually ended up being a blessing in disguise (just as long as you can actually get to the property). The property was between 14-25% occupied when we were there for 9 nights which meant we had the place to ourselves. There were between 50-75 guests on the island and roughly 400 staff. What a great ratio! Both management and staff took the virus extremely seriously and they were diligent about wearing masks and taking our temperatures multiple times a day. Also keep in mind that no one gets into the country without a negative test and the staff also must have a negative test to be there. We often joked that we were maybe in one of the safest places in the world. The scenery, water and facilities are breathtaking. Our water villa was magnificent. The staff is outstanding, especially given that they are also having to adapt to this strange pandemic environment. We did a number of excursions and they were all great. Fondue/wine night, sunset cruise and scuba diving were all highlights. Our only disappointment was doing the whale shark excursion twice with no sightings either time. That is just luck of the draw. As for food and drink, this area was inconsistent at times but was still overall very good. Like others have noted, food and drink are incredibly expensive. If you take advantage of the free breakfast and the free 4:30pm happy hour at Rangali Bar, then that saves a lot of money. Regardless of cost, probably our favorite meal each day was breakfast. The staff was consistently very friendly, genuinely wanted to help and it was clear that management has done an excellent job with training. There are too many people to thank. But a few to note are Jamie who was our main contact and butler of sorts, the Mandhoo breakfast staff, quiet beach bar staff, Rangali bar staff and the fondue/wine night staff. One tip to know is that this property is 3 islands. 2 for the guests and 1 for the employees. One of the islands essentially has all of its villas currently shut down for repair/upgrade. I would guess at ~50% occupancy, they would technically be close to full based on available rooms. This was truly a "lifestyles of the rich and famous" experience that exceeded even our highest expectations. We travelled together as two couples and both women had tears in their eyes as we boarded the sea plane to leave. Read less

Beautiful beaches ..., the staff has been the best staff I e ever encountered. Such much attention to every need. Jaime our host for the trip is an amazing concierge.. booked everything for my husband and I. We did the whale shark tour and unfortunately we didn’t get a sighting it they don’t guarantee you will see a whale shark .. they are very scarce at the moment, but they did offer us 50% off the excursion if we wanted to try another day. The restaurants here have all been 5 star. We don’t want to leave! Amazing adventure because it took us two days to get here from the states, but the moment we landed in the sea plane we were in awe of the accommodations. Read less

I liked the fact that you’re checked in for your stay whilest in the lounge before you take off for the seaplane flight. The greet on arrival is really amazing and our host Saskia took us straight to our Villa. We were very grateful to receive an upgrade to a Deluxe Beach Villa which was delightful, spacious and extremely private. The cleanliness was excellent and consistently so throughout our stay. The staff everywhere in all areas were lovely and were only too happy to help. The restaurants are all nice environments to be in but are blighted by guests watching videos at the table without headphones. I feel this should be addressed by the resort management as it really impacts the experience of other guests. The food is ok and very expensive, for the price is should be better. The water sports team were brilliant and we had a lot of fun learning to paddle board during our stay. We snorkelled the house reef everyday and saw an amazing array of fishies, black tip reef sharks and a couple of turtles. Staying on the island was magical and a fantastic environment to relax in, we’re going back next year! Read less

It is true that much has changed in the world since our previous visit to the Conrad in January this year. However there are more positive changes than negatives so in this review I am going to try and give a balanced view. For people in the UK it has become easier to reach the Maldives with BA moving the direct flight to Heathrow , using a brand new 777 (ours was two weeks old) with Club suites , and particularly for us offering way more availability using Avios points. Whilst we had taken out insurance from Battleface as when we booked the Maldives was not in the UK Travel Corridor list iwhich does show it is perfectly possible to get insurance and at £120 for two for a week not very expensive (covers everything we needed). The PCR test when we booked looked challenging but there seems to have been an explosion of places you can get tested so again a little bit of perseverance pays off. You do need to be internet savvy to upload the various bits of documentation but as long as you are then it is pretty easily achievable to arrive unruffled. Certainly, going through Male airport was very quick, friendly and simple. If you decide to go then a fantastic arrival awaits you at the Conrad with a personal welcome that made us feel like royalty. There are some changes to be sure, plenty of hand gel stations in a discrete black colour are around, there are discrete temperature checks as you enter any restaurant, go to evening cocktails etc. but this is done with respect and is reassuring. The snorkeling equipment that you borrow is sealed in sterile containers, the staff all wear masks, and there is care taken to space apart guests at every occasion. In practical terms in has meant the Chinese restaurant includes seats over the beach, evening cocktails are now spaced out near to Rangali bar and breakfast is now al la carte not buffet. Personally, some of these I see as better than before. The management team have been using the time to refurbish certain areas and we only got to the “new” Vilu for breakfast on our last day. By the time we go next in 2021 we are looking forward to seeing the new Rangali bar. Being Conrad, they remembered that last time (Jan 20) we loved villa 134 so guess which Villa they gave us. It is just wonderful. The flower artwork on the bed as we came into our villa was a really special touch, thanks to Arshad for arranging that. The snorkeling was far improved as the fish, perhaps given less guests, have exploded and within metres of our villa we had fish soup with many new species of fish and some obviously new coral forming. For food lovers you will be super pleased to discover the new head chef “Christian” who has, in our opinion, struck a great balance between retaining old favorites and introducing some exciting new flavors. This helps provide many new experiences to offset the absence of some of the buffet specials. To keep people safe every table has a QR code to bring up the menus which works well. In many aspects we were lucky with this visit given the flux going on in the world, but we would go again in a heartbeat and our booking for January 2021 is something we are looking to with even more expectation. So in summary, things have changed, many for the better, a few are not quite so positive (that is the world we all have to live in) but the experience is still “heaven on earth” and well worth any minor hassles to make it happen. We stayed here in Sept/October 2019 and, having had such a great experience, had already booked to come back the same holiday period in 2020. Having cancelled our planned holidays since the worldwide lockdowns due to the pandemic started, we decided to go ahead with our trip to Rangali as we felt it would actually be safer than our home country and we were right! We arrived the day the hotel re-opened, and the staff team were clearly as happy to have guests back as we were to be welcomed so warmly in such a beautiful location by a fantastic team. In fact, even George (the resident heron) was waiting to welcome us from our villa's sun lounger when we first left our room to venture to the beach! From a COVID point of view we felt 100% safe at all times given that all tourists to the Maldives are now required to prove a negative COVID test to the authorities, any staff coming in to the island had had to quarantine and produce a negative test before resuming their duties and daily temperature checks were carried out upon entering any eating establishments or the kids club. There is also a facility to have a PCR test performed before you return home, if this is required by the airline or country you are returning to. We stayed in a deluxe beach villa which was really fantastic, providing a superb base for the two of us and our two kids, aged 6 and 8. Spacious, well furnished and incredibly designed with a lounger area and outdoor shower on one side (also perfect for my husband on the odd evening he had to do work calls whilst the kids were sleeping) and a pool with loungers and path leading to the beach the other side of the actual sleeping / bathroom areas. The food was great as always. We missed having the opportunity to eat dinner at the Rangali Bar, as we had done the previous year, but this was perfectly understandable as the Atoll Restaurant & inside bar areas were undergoing renovation and in addition, more restaurants gradually opened as more guests started to arrive. We did enjoy some incredible dinners at Mandhoo (as well as good breakfasts), the restaurant being new to us, having been closed the year before. We also particularly enjoy Ufaa and the kids loved the noodle soup dish they would prepare specially for them, which also made a welcome change from the standard kids menu. The kids menu is good but we were lucky enough to stay 10 days so sometimes it can seem like the kids eat a lot of the same thing. However, the staff are so brilliant that they will accommodate where possible and so my kids were able to also indulge in the one of their favourite spaghetti sauces which wasn't officially on the menu. The staff are absolutely fantastic and I have to say that at the all the places I have stayed around the world these are really the best team - great service, genuine and friendly. We know many by name, but my kids get on so well with them all that my kids seem to have given many of them their own nicknames, which makes it harder for me to be able to name them all correctly. Special mention to the Rangali bar team led by Kosi - my kids were so excited to see them again and it seemed like old friends reuniting. Special mention also to the outlet manager (who at the time was managing Mandhoo, Ufaa and Itaa I believe), the team at Mandhoo, Ufaa, the head chef, Carla (general manager), the reception and the staff at the kids club. It was also really lovely to see familiar faces from last year and even to be greeted by one who had come out of quarantine not long before we were due to leave but still made an effort to came and say hello to us. My kids really enjoyed the kids club and wanted to go back every day. They even took them out snorkelling as one of the activities. We all enjoyed snorkelling and venturing around the reefs and the dive centre provide all the equipment needed - also with COVID procedures in place. In summary, had I written a review last year it would have recommended to stay here and this year I can emphatically confirm it really is a great experience if you are able to visit. I look forward to being able to return for a relaxing and fun holiday again in the near future. Read less
