Mountain to Sea Rail Passage

Mountain to Sea Rail Passage

If anywhere encapsulates the great outdoors it’s Canada’s West. A gallery of cloud-skirting mountains, forested shorelines, and wildlife-rich waters, it’s ripe for exploring by rail, road, boat, and foot. Travel from Calgary for a stay in Banff which gives an instant introduction to the Rockies’ contrasting drama and serenity, as you tour places like Tunnel Mountain Drive for views into the Bow River Valley; and Cave & Basin where Banff began. The West’s roads are a riot of experiences, whether you’re travelling the Icefields Parkway to walk on Athabasca Glacier and see Lake Louise, or the length of Vancouver Island to Victoria, for a whale watching trip among orca and grey whales. But rails rule here, and the VIA Rail journey from Jasper to Prince Rupert, stopping off to sleep in striking Prince George, gives trackside views of ancient forests and valleys, and photo opportunities of Mount Robson. If rails rule inland, then water rules the coastline. The easiest way to experience the jagged fjords, fishing villages, creaking ice floes, and resident whales and sea lions, is by boat, sailing to Port Hardy along the famous Inside Passage. And it’s the water that takes you to Vancouver, where you’re let loose.

Trans Canada by Rail

Trans Canada by Rail

An institution in Canada, the railroad from East to West’s bound by stunning terminals and accompanied by million dollar views. Uniting two of the best routes, you can pair VIA Rail’s crossing from buzzing Toronto to peaceful Jasper, with the Rocky Mountaineer from mountain-clad Banff to vibrant Vancouver; switching tracks for tarmac in between to experience the roads of the Rockies. Before getting started, there’s plenty to see in the East: a Toronto tour packs in guidebook essentials, while a day trip to Niagara features a cruise to the foot of the falls, and drives to Niagara Gorge and Niagara-on-the-Lake. Taking to the rails, you’ll eat, sleep and sightsee aboard The Canadian on your luxurious passage through the Canadian Shield, glittering lakes, gold-spun prairielands and, ultimately, the Rockies. A midpoint mini-break, sleepovers in Jasper, Lake Louise and Banff allow sightseeing of Banff’s beauty spots, and a journey to the Columbia Icefield to drive and walk on a glacier. Back on the tracks for two days, the Rocky Mountaineer’s luxury carriages, dining, and views make leaving the Rockies a little easier. Rocky Mountaineer - First Passage to the West Highlights

Rocky Mountaineer - First Passage to the West Highlights

Taking the slow train is often more rewarding than riding the express and nowhere more so than across the Canadian Rockies. Famous world over for its utmost luxury and top-of-the-world scenery, the Rocky Mountaineer doesn’t just take you on a journey; it takes you on an adventure. Through an ever-changing reel of mesmeric landscapes; Fraser Valley’s fields, a series of twisting rivers, mighty gorges, boundless deserts and ranches, vertiginous mountain passes, and light-sapping tunnels all take their turn as you travel to or from the realm of the Rockies. It’s not just the view through the window that dazzles though. The Rocky Mountaineer is synonymous with indulgence, so there’s no better seat in the house for soaking up sights like Hell’s Gate, Roger’s Pass, Kicking Horse Canyon and, of course, the glaciers and snow-capped peaks of the Canadian Rockies. But some viewpoints just can’t be reached by rail, so the roads pave the way for journeys through Yoho National Park to see wonders like the Spiral Tunnels, Emerald Lake and Lake Louise, and around Banff where the Hoodoos and Bow Falls continue to wow wide-eyed travellers. And, when neither roads nor rails will cut it, it’s time to take to the sky, whether that’s scaling mountain slopes by Banff Gondola or flightseeing over the Rockies in a summit-seeking helicopter.

Rocky Mountaineer - Grand Rail Circle

Not much can compete with the attention-grabbing panoramas when you’re travelling through Canada’s West. But the Rocky Mountaineer might just be in with a chance, and this tour is the ultimate rail holiday, combining two classic Rocky Mountaineer train routes and the mighty Canadian Rockies in one adventure. The kind of luxury usually only reserved for the celeb set, you’re joined on board by master chefs and impeccable attendants who provide exquisite food, wine and service as you’re whisked between Vancouver, Kamloops, and Banff; and then between Jasper, Quesnel, and Whistler (with a cheeky extra stay in Lake Louise en route). But it’s your seat that becomes your most prized possession. Journeying only by daylight so you can take in every mountain, river, tree and waterfall, it’s your pew for an unfurling ream of sights as you circumnavigate the West and its finest features, including Mount Robson, the Rocky Mountain Trench, the dazzlingly high Deep Creek Bridge, and the Sea to Sky Corridor towards Vancouver. It’s not just your train seat that grants you unforgettable views. On a scenic coach tour of Jasper National Park you will see some of the park’s natural attractions and rugged peaks, and perhaps catch a glimpse of the local wildlife. In Banff, a gondola ride leads to national park views from Sulphur Mountain. And, as you drive the sloping ice onto Athabasca Glacier, it’s your seat on the monstrous Ice Explorer that provides the most memorable views.

Canadian Western Discovery

Canadian Western Discovery

This route across the Rockies reveals the big picture, taking shutterhappy travellers to some of the most-snapped photo stops in western Canada — but it also reveals new view points, and gives you time to explore each big town and city your own way. Setting off in a small group adds to the authentic feeling of remoteness as you travel through the coastal mountains and high mountain passes from Vancouver to Banff. Along the way you’ll hit some of the big camera-clicking contenders, like beyond-beautiful Lake Louise; and you’ll get to taste the region’s sublime solitude with a quiet picnic among the valleys around Yoho National Park. This isn’t any ordinary road trip though — you’ll also experience Canada by rail, water, ice, and air. You’ll switch over to the railroads in Jasper, riding over the Yellowhead Pass to Prince George, with endless album-worthy scenes rolling past your window like a constantly moving flick book. You’ll get closer to nature by flying to Victoria in a small plane, soaring above the coastal fringe and over the Strait of Georgia. You’ll also board the ferry with locals, to sail to Vancouver where you’ll re-emerge in city life with a camera filled with memories.
