Accessibility explained

Across the world, the laws determining how accessible hotels and accommodation are will vary. So rather than baffling you with local by-laws and exclusions, we keep it simple with three generalised categories for our accessible holidays listings:

Good General Access Logo

Good General Access*

Properties that offer good general access for those guests who are able to walk short distances and can manage up to six steps.

Wheelchair Accessible Logo

Wheelchair Accessible*

Wheelchair accessible properties that offer wheelchair adapted rooms with either roll-in shower or bath tub with grab rails.

Partially Accessible

Partially Accessible*

Properties that offer wheelchair adapted rooms with partially accessible amenities.

*Please note: These rooms are subject to availability and may only be available in specific room categories with varying bedding arrangements. Please request this at the time of booking.

Getting from A to B

Fancy taking a road trip? Driving up and down Route 66 or touring the highways and byways of the US? We work with car rental providers to arrange adapted vehicle hire that’ll make your road trip one to remember for all the right reasons. We can also make sure you get to and from the airports easily, with wheelchair accessible transfers and help at the airport if you need it.

SA Car Hire

Adapted vehicles

There should be nothing holding you back from the perfect holiday, so we can even arrange for an adapted vehicle for you to suit your needs on your travels. Whether you need an adapted transfer vehicle or wish to take to the wheel yourself and hire a car, we've got it covered.

Holidays for disabled travellers and their carers

If you rely on a carer to help you with everyday activities, let us know. We can make sure all the details are taken care of, such as suggesting resorts that are suitable for both of you, that you travel together, and that accommodation is available for both travelling companions. Holidays for the disabled and carers shouldn’t exclude anyone, so we make sure everyone has a great time, and that you all get the help and support you need.

Cognitive disabilities

Travelling with a cognitive disability, such as Autism or ADHD can be worrying for the whole family, that’s where we step in, our SAT team know it’s all in the detail. Holidays are about family time, fun filled days and tired kids, that’s why we’ve loads of helpful tips designed to take the stress out of travelling. So, if you want to know how to access assistance at UK airports, or fast-track the immigration queues in the USA look no further. From theme park information to hotel requests, we’ve got it covered.

New Sensory Room at Gatwick Airport

Sensory Room

Gatwick North Terminal

The sensory room is a calming and relaxing environment, designed for passengers with disabilities like autism, dementia or cognitive impairment, who will benefit from a safe and distracting place when in unfamiliar surroundings.

The sensory room is free to use, accessible for wheelchairs and availability is on a first come, first served basis to passengers departing from the North Terminal.

How to book?

To use the sensory room before your flight, visit the special assistance reception in the departure lounge to reserve a 45-minute session. We recommend you arrive at the special assistance reception at least three hours before your flight.

Allergies and dietary requirements

Food allergies

Each airline has their own policy relating to allergy and dietary requirements. We strongly recommend checking the airline you are flying with can cater for your needs before making a reservation. Please click below for further information on Virgin Atlantic's specialised meals.

Whilst Virgin Holidays cannot guarantee any food choice or availability with our hoteliers or suppliers, if you’re on a board basis with us, we will ensure the hotel is made aware of the need for special meals for allergy/medical reasons. If you have any specific dietary needs or severe allergies please contact us as soon as possible to discuss further.

Giving you the lowdown on locations

If you’re booking disabled holidays abroad, we’ll go out of our way to make sure you get the break you want. We’ll give you our expert opinion on resorts, attractions and accommodation, telling you which ones are suitable for your needs, and suggesting alternatives where necessary.

We’re travellers too, so we don’t just give you the blurb, we give you first-hand experiences of these destinations so you can make an informed choice. If a resort has steep hills and masses of steps, we’ll warn you in advance. If it’s specially adapted to welcome wheelchair users or disabled guests with guide dogs, we’ll flag it up for you.

Wheelchair friendly holidays – hitting the beach

Don't forget our Virgin Holidays pre-bookable Beach Wheelchairs which have been rolled out into the Caribbean

Soft sandy beaches can be tricky for travellers with mobility issues, especially if you’re in a wheelchair. We’ve thought about this, and have been working with our friends in the Caribbean to offer pre-bookable beach wheelchairs. Complete with monster wheels that don’t sink into the sand (and also look pretty cool, too), they make it easy for you to enjoy a dip in the ocean or a lazy day on the sand.

3 of our hotels in the Caribbean feature these Virgin Holidays beach wheelchairs for complimentary use, subject to availability. In addition to this, many of our other hotels across the Caribbean can also offer their own beach wheelchairs* for customers use.

*Please note: All beach wheelchairs are subject to availability.

Our top wheelchair accessible hotels

Fancy a family holiday to the fun-filled Orlando? Or perhaps a relaxing escape to the Caribbean is more your thing? While you decide on your next trip away, take a look below at our top wheelchair accessible hotels, located in some of our most popular destinations.

All-inclusive disabled holidays abroad

Focus on having a great break and bundle everything into one package with an all-inclusive holiday. We’ve picked a selection of top holidays for disabled travellers, whether you’re travelling solo, with a carer, or with your family and friends. Wrap up the flight, hotel or accommodation, food and some drinks into one deal, and we’ll take care of everything for you. We’ll adapt the package to suit your needs, so if you want a hotel with rooms on the lower floors, we’ll find you one.
