Sandals Royal Bahamian Spa Resort & Offshore Island

Nassau, Bahamas

The hotel

As if this hotel wasn't luxurious enough already, the recent renovations have taken Sandals Royal Bahamian to another level - and they're ready to welcome you back to experience everything new they have to offer. The swim-up suites are the standout room type at this property, allowing you to step right from the comfort of your room straight into a gently flowing river pool with views of the ocean ahead. The Island Village offers privacy and romance and; as with all Sandals properties; the butler service will leave you not having to lift a finger. The real highlight of this Sandals hotel is the private offshore island - just jump on a Love runner and you'll be there in 5 minutes. It's basically a resort in itself, complete with beach club, pool, swim-up bar and spa experiences. Paradise: found and included. When you are feeling a bit more adventurous, there are a host of activities included in your stay so you can work up an appetite. You'll be spoilt for choice when you do get hungry though, with 10 gourmet restaurants and 2 food trucks - you'll have to make sure you stay long enough to ensure you try them all!

Overall, our trip was very good. We weren’t thrilled with our first room, which was on the back side of the West Bay Village building and faced a parking lot, but they moved us to the other side and the room was great (room category PJS). Some rooms have the large walk-in shower and some have the shower-tub combo. The renovations of the East Bay Village were still going on, so we did not get the regular Club Sandals lounge check in. Having said that, the resort’s pivot was fantastic! Leading us to our lobby, we were given a little tour of the property and really felt welcomed. One couple in our group was older and had mobility challenges and our host made sure to take the ramps instead of the stairs without making a big deal of it. Very smooth and very respectful. The food was fantastic! I don’t think we had a bad meal all week. The only minor complaint was that the sushi restaurant was closed one night when we went. The singers at the pub were absolutely incredible and so nice! I wish we could have seen them every night and, frankly, they should have been featured in a more visible location. Fabulous! The reviews are spot-on about the private island. We absolutely loved that beach! I guess if there was a least favorite restaurant, it was Aurelia House on the island, but it wasn’t bad or anything. The weather was apparently unseasonably cold while we were there (not the resort’s fault, of course), so it was a bit too cool to swim in the pools. I wouldn’t imagine that would be a problem normally, but we really enjoy the swim-up bars, so it was a bit of a bummer. We went diving one day and the staff was fabulous! The dive boat left from the other side of the island, so we had a 20 minute van ride to get there, but we didn’t mind. The water was cold, though, so be prepared for a chilly boat ride back to shore. I was not and wished I had brought a hoodie… or a parka! The only complaint I really had was that I scheduled a meeting with the property manager to discuss some room concerns I had and, after waiting 15 minutes, he never showed up. I was frustrated to have wasted time from my trip for nothing, but I can’t imagine most people will have this issue. My concern was that we had room problems and had to be moved on our past two Sandals trips (the last one was Ochi) and wanted to get some insight into what recommendations he had for avoiding these problems in future visits. I had heard he was great, attentive, and personable, so I was surprised at being stood up. It made me not want to return, but I’ve had enough experience with Sandals that I might be willing to look past this one blip. Again, the staff was fantastic, the food and drinks were wonderful, the property is beautiful, the dive operation is great, and the singers (I want to say Angel and Patrice, but I’m horrible with names) alone make me want to return. Despite one relatively minor hiccup, it was another great Sandals trip. Read less

Amazing staff (can't stress this enough)...BUT this resort has its issues. There are better values for your money. I would look elsewhere. Most concerning were the water/sewer issues. There was a water shutdown which prevented showering and the toilets from flushing for a whole afternoon. There is also a suspect pipe that runs under the pier and discharges some type of water right into the main beach where you swim. THE GOOD Most staff were amazing and went out of their way to make sure you were having a great experience. Both the West and East Pools were great. The West is the main "party pool", while the East is more laid back. Food trucks were delicious. The fire show and the piano bar were fun. Steak House and the Hibachi Restaurant were good. Calico lunch was also a good spot. Tessoro breakfast was decent, but food could get cold if you arrived towards the end of the buffet. Baha Mar casino is great and a 5-minute taxi ride. We also heard the private island was amazing, but it was closed due to rough seas for most of our trip so we did not get there. THE BAD On busy days, you have to wake up at dawn to beat the resort Butlers to the good pool and beach spots. Staff will tell you this is not the case, but it is true. Our West Bay Honeymoon Oceanview Club Level Suite overlooked a parking lot and a dirty, empty sand lot. We could see the ocean through the trees which helped. The room was also a bit dated and not the cleanest. Getting room towels and your full room serviced was a challenge some days. The water shutdown was not ideal. Despite some decent spots mentioned above, the food quality was generally hit or miss and not what you would expect at this price point. THE UGLY The beach was a disappointment. It was tough to get a good spot unless you got up super early. There was a lot of seaweed to the right of the pier. And, then there's the water pipe under the pier, mentioned above. The ocean was also very rough while we were there (not the resort's fault), but it didn't help our overall experience. There were no water sports allowed b/c of red flag warnings (also not their fault). BOTTOM LINE Again, the staff was amazing. However, this was our first Sandals vacation and I'm not sure I would book another one. For the price point, I would look elsewhere. Read less

Apr 30, 2024 Jack G

When you are at the resort be sure to go to the gym and get instruction from Lincoln. He is very patient and knowledgeable and can help you with all aspects of exercise. Lincoln got me started with a program of stretching and now I do it at home. It really helps - thanks Lincoln.

Honestly, if I had had to pay for this trip I would be upset. Twice we had no water in our room. Twice our room was not cleaned so no towels. Pool side wait staff was non-existent. Pool side bar staff at the main pool made you feel like you were unconvincing them. Food was excellent and front desk staff amazing.
