The hotel

Arguably the globe’s coolest name in hotels, the W has finally hit Dubai’s coveted Palm Jumeirah neighbourhood. Seriously stylish, it brings the W’s famous VIP vibe with it, with audacious design and décor, Michelin-starred master chefs at its signature dining venues, a spa that mixes chilled massages with playful party-prep treatments like coloured lashes, and chic hangout spaces like SoBe – a rooftop bar with 360 degree views over Dubai’s skyscrapers and the Arabian Sea. The fashionable feel continues down at W The Palm Dubai’s WET Deck, where you’ll find a pristine sandy shoreline, DJ booth, and space-age cabana pods sitting on pool-top platforms.

I arrived pretty late in the evening and the check-in process and gentleman at the front desk was friendly, polite and professional. I stayed in a Fabulous Room overlooking the sea. The room was well equipped, with a nice bar area, ample space for storage, a spacious seating area and the bed was comfortable. Some feedback to management for areas of improvement and some missed opportunities that could have made my experience better: The room was well equipped although locating the hairdryer was quite a scavenger hunt. It was in a fabric bag, in a drawer under the safe which was in a closet where the coffee maker and drinking glasses were stored. I’m not sure what the logic behind that would be but maybe placing it somewhere a person would expect to use it like near the vanity or a mirror would be more helpful. That’s like looking for a spoon and plate and finding it in the shower. My room was facing an area where vehicles were on standby including large buses. The patio door was not fully closed when I first entered my room after check-in, and there was a small gap between the sliding doors so the aroma of automobile exhaust fumes seeped into the room. At first I thought there was a gas leak but then realized where the smell was coming from. The patio door was tricky to close and if not done properly, a gap would be left between the sliding doors allowing the street noise to enter as well as automobile fumes. There were plenty of pool and beach loungers during the weekday, but there didn’t seem to be enough pool and beach loungers for guests during the weekend. Apparently, you would have to reserve loungers especially on the weekends. This had to be the first hotel I’ve ever stayed at where there was a limited amount of loungers, so I was kind of shocked, but luckily my room had a sun-bed. It’d be nice to have enough loungers for actual guests. I asked concierge about the beach club (BCH:CLB) that was next to the hotel and if they knew the operating hours. They had no idea what I was talking about. They even went to some back area and to another desk to ask their colleagues, yet no one knew anything about BCH:CLB or that something even existed next to the hotel. They recommended that I just walk over there. I already had to search for a hairdryer and where a gas smell was coming from, so I guess I might as well search for how to get to the beach club that nobody knew anything about. Lastly, I understand signing a bill with my room number and name when reconciling a meal or drink bill is necessary, but repeating it back to me loudly so others around can hear it is quite unsettling and lacked any kind of discretion. It didn’t happen every single time, but happened several and enough times that it was concerning. I’ve never experienced this before at other hotels I’ve stayed at worldwide or at other W hotels. I guess letting everyone around me know what room I’m staying in is the norm in Dubai. For the most part, a majority of the staff that I encountered were friendly, and professional. Unfortunately, the service wasn’t on par to other 5- star hotels or W Hotels that I’ve stayed at. Staff appeared unsure of what they were doing most of the time, but those who were actually competent did a great job. The live Dj and music by the pool was a vibe. Check-out was seamless. SoBe Rooftop had excellent views during sunset. The food served during breakfast hours at LIV was good. What was a true gem was Torno Subito. I had one of the fixed courses menu options. Chef Massimo made his acquaintance at my table and asked how I was enjoying my dinner. The food and service at Torno Subito was phenomenal. I’ve stayed at other W Hotels all over the world but unfortunately, this hotel didn’t live up to what I expected from W Hotels. Overall, I enjoyed my stay. Read less

We have stayed at other hotels on the palm and never had the extra cost when upgraded to half board. So be aware 150 Dirham does not go very far in the Italian or the Japanese. We had a good stay but would not choose to stay here again. Read less

I would like to start this review off first by saying we are not snobby atall and have stayed in many hotels in Dubai. This was by far the worst hotel we have ever stayed in. The first night we arrived late at 4am. We asked for something to eat and the receptionist told us that we had missed our meals we paid for that day so would have to pay an extra charge for room service. Every hotel we have stayed in Dubai has gave us completely room service when arriving late after a late flight. Breakfast was lovely we could not knock the service and quality of food however lunch and dinner was the same every day the buffet was tiny. There wasn’t a single chip or fry in sight even in the children’s section. There wasn’t actually a children’s section considering that it was a family resort too. We tried to go for a walk down the beach and the security guard stopped us saying it’s private property so could not walk down. Every single other resort in Dubai has let us walk down the beach. I would not recommend going here and wasting your hard earned money. You will be disappointed. The pool area was also tiny and very decieving on photos, the air con masewell of not been off. I rate this hotel a 0 out of 10. Read less
