The hotel

When you're looking to wander around Fisherman's Wharf trying out the various dining options, enjoy the entertainment on Pier 39, and wander through the shops on Ghirardelli Square - well you couldn't pick a better location for your hotel than the Kimpton Alton. Just a stones thorugh from all of the above, you're also only about 15 minutes walk from San Francisco Bay where you can take the ferry to Alcatraz. Back at the hotel the rooms offer very comfy beds, and cosy vibes that will allow you to relax after a day exploring Golden Gate City. Even better, they offer complimentary tea and coffee to kick start your day, and a complimentary wine and beer hour to wind down at the end of it! Couple that with the option of in-room spa treatments and you really will feel relaxed on this city break. The service on hand at this hotel is indeed top notch - there's even complimentary scooters on hand to use for the little ones to roam the city!

The hotel location is awesome but what REALLY made the hotel and my trip special and one-of-kind unforgettable were the staff, especially Dean and Harvey. From restaurants to excursions, areas to see, neighborhoods to explore, the most unique dining and shopping experiences, and everything in between they knew it all! I honestly have never felt so attended to and could tell they just love their city and love helping people see why it is such a beautiful place. They made my visit the absolute BEST! Read less

I'd absolutely stay here again and yes, I recommend it to others also. Kimpton is in a wonderful location (close walking to trolley, Fisherman's Wharf, and the lovely restaurants of Little Italy). I was a little anxious about staying in SF as I've heard it's a bit of a dangerous city but I felt very safe in this area and fine to walk around. Ubers easy to call from the front as well. This area is also much lovelier than Union Square. The hotel itself is a bit worn - not quite to the standard I'd have expected from a Kimpton. It probably needs to get a deep clean going - it's clean on the surface and linens etc all clearly clean and usable but the panel under the mirror was super dusty, there was a bit of trash under the sink basin and the carpet feels old (clean but super worn) and the air-conditioning felt a bit ancient because of its little cage on the floor even though I suspect it wasn't that old. This makes the room feel very dark and not super welcoming, although it was comfortable and the TV was huge/modern. The amenity fee feels a bit cheeky - there's no value from it (blah blah blah gym, free coffee/wine) but the profit margin in that must be pretty solid especially when the overnight rate for a room is already a bit more than the place is worth. Don't really feel like this was well advertised at booking and left feeling a bit sour about the value for money. The restaurant Abaca is tremendous. 100% recommend if even you choose to stay somewhere else. The staff are all super lovely, and shower has good water pressure. With a spruce up and a lower amenity fee this place would be climbing into 4 stars easy breezy. Thanks for the stay team. Read less

Hotel amenities are good but I am not totally happy with the daily charge on top of the room charge for so called amenities. There are free drinks between 5 & 6 (beer, wine & soft drinks) but I’m not sure what else you get for the fee. Was busy during our stay. Didn’t use the restaurant. There are a few homeless people in the area but they didn’t cause any problems. Read less

Amazing hotel, staff very accommodating, friendly and helpful. Was lovely to enjoy complimentary drinks. Bedrooms were lovely, clean and plenty of room. Would highly recommend. Lovely additional touches such as having a record player in rooms with a selection of records to choose from. Restaurant in hotel is amazing
