Excalibur

The Strip, Las Vegas

Virgin rating

The hotel

This good value on-strip casino hotel boasts an enormous pool area and is home to the must-see Tournament of Kings dinner show, complete with knights on horseback, jousting, pyrotechnics and Merlin himself. Las Vegas’s take on old England, the Excalibur would surprise the Knights of the Round Table. But that’s where it leaves England behind and takes on the world. There’s the all-American casino (with 100,000 sq ft of gaming), games arcade, and branch of Johnny Rockets’ famous hamburger chain. There’s Italy, Mexico and Asia (and a bit more America) in its casual restaurants and food court. And there’s Australia in its ‘Thunder from Down Under’ adult show and Australian Bee Gees tribute concert.

I'll start with the bad. Arrived around 9 AM. I paid for early check-in, but figured room probably wouldn't be ready. Guy said come back at 11 am and room will be ready. No big deal. Left luggage a bell desk and went to walk around. Came back at 11 AM. The lady this time said that even though I paid for early check-in my room wouldn't be… Read more
I'll start with the bad. Arrived around 9 AM. I paid for early check-in, but figured room probably wouldn't be ready. Guy said come back at 11 am and room will be ready. No big deal. Left luggage a bell desk and went to walk around. Came back at 11 AM. The lady this time said that even though I paid for early check-in my room wouldn't be ready til 2-3 PM because I had a strip view room. She said if I wanted to check in now, I could, but it would be a basic (non-strip view) room, but up higher so I would have a little view in the other direction. She said I would still have to pay the same amount and the early check-in fees if I wanted to check in early. At this time we bought some stuff and just wanted to get to our room, so we agreed to this. We walked across the casino to our tower, made it up the elevator, and just before we got to our room, my cell phone rang. "I'm sorry sir, but I wasn't suppose to give you that room, it is under renovation." Back down the elevator, across the casino, to the front desk. Now the option I was given (that was ready at the moment) was a room on a lower floor with basically no view. Whatever I said, I just want a room to go to. For my trouble, they did waive the early check in fee and resort fees for 1 night! That's it! I would have thought for all the trouble and bad information they gave me at least waive the 3 nights of resort fees. Anyway, now on to the good. After the check-in debacle, everything was fine. The bell desk was super friendly and fast with our luggage. The room was very spacious and very clean. The casino set up was pretty easy to navigate and not as confusing as some others on the strip. There were only two of the four pools open when we were there, but one of them was very large. The pool area was very clean. There is a decent amount of food options at the casino and NY NY is just across the walk way with many more. It is a decent property for the price and I would consider staying here again as long as I arrived after 4 PM when all the rooms that you pay for should be ready. Read less

I’ve been to Vegas a number of times, usually staying at the nicer properties. This time I wanted to cheap it out and the Excalibur is the cheapest of the MGM properties. I was prepared for the worst, but was quite happy with what I got. I had reservations for about $60/night including all taxes and fees. At check-in, I was able to use one of the priority lines, so minimal wait. The regular line might have been a 20-30 min wait. I got a room in the Royal Tower overlooking Las Vegas Blvd. The room was a very dated neutral beige colour, but it was clean and fairly well kept. Bed was comfortable. WiFi was decent, but drops you quickly with no activity. Bathroom was large with shower only. There is an in-room safe. AC was a bit loud, but performed well. The room felt like a stay at a Best Western. The only major negative is they looked to have removed the mini fridge. The cabinetry has an empty space for one, but they looked like they took them out. Food options are of the average quality, but a number of quick options. I consider New York New York and MGM Grand the southern most walkable part of the strip, and the Excalibur is just outside of it, which is convenient enough for walkers like me. Overall, I was satisfied with my stay. It’s not a luxury option. It’s what I consider an average class hotel at a low cost, and that’s all I wanted. Read less
