My wife and I had spent March 14-21, 2020 at Sandals South Coast Bungalows and we are so very glad we did it considering we were thinking about cancelling because of the corona virus. The bungalows themselves are fantastic- everything you truly could hope and wish for. The bungalow provides a stocked bar and fridge, in room sitting chairs, king bed, double sink bathroom area, private toilet, indoor and outdoor showers, built in hammock area, 2 outdoor lounge chairs, outdoor table and 2 chairs, outdoor tub, lower level deck with 2 sitting chairs and an umbrella, and a floating circle to lay out in the ocean in. There was also enough dresser space to house all your clothes and personal items. The decor was perfect with a window in your room to the ocean below. We could not have asked for better accommodations. Along with the bungalow you also had a private butler (butlers). We had Earnie and Tiffany and I could not say anything better about them. They were impeccable and were there for whatever needs we wanted; breakfast, afternoons snacks, dinner delivered, golf cart ride to our destination, late night ride back to bungalow.....both were fantastic though we have a soft spot in our hearts for Earnie. The vacation was even more than we could have dreamed of even though everyone was feeling the pandemic. We met a few very special couples while we were there that will last a lifetime. Sandals and all It’s employees were very professional and kind and courteous even though they had to be just as worried as we were about what was going on in our world. The resort closed down 2 days after we left to try and keep the virus to a minimum. Earnie has been working for Sandals for years and said he had never seen anything like that. It was a sad ending to our vacation of a lifetime but in saying that I do not think it will be our last visit to Jamaica or the bungalows. Absolutely beautiful. Read less

Resort: Sandals South Coast 7 night trip. This is our 4th trip to this resort and 15th Sandals trip. Tips: 1. Research the resort before booking. Know the different room levels, what they include (I’m putting some of that in this review as I go) and where the room you are looking to book is located. Sandals website is a great place to start and there’s even an interactive map for each resort. 2. Know that the resort is 90 minutes +/- from the airport 3. Know that all Sandals resorts have a strict no tipping policy except for butlers and spa staff. 4. Know that all Sandals resorts have designated smoking areas and smokers should use them *no smoking on balconies or patios* 5. Music on the beach/patio/balcony is a pet peeve of a lot of guests so please be respectful and use ear buds/ear phones. 6. If you are celebrating a special occasion do not expect it to be recognized as staff can’t possibly remember everyone’s special day you can make your own celebration. 7. If you are a return guest and do now wish to go to the return guest dinner then stop by the loyalty and travel office to pick up your t-shirts. 8. Room service is for club and butler guests only. 9. If you have mobility issues then it is probably in your best interest to book a walkout room. Even though all of the buildings have elevators, as everyone knows, elevators can breakdown. 10. While on the subject of mobility issues. Do know that this is a large resort. End to end on the back pathways at a stroll took me 10 minutes (last room in French village to Neptune’s restaurant). If you have mobility issues I would highly suggest booking Italian village as it is close to everything. 11. This one I can’t stress enough, use the loop (info is in your room) on resort if you have any compliments or problems, no use posting on social media as no one there can help you. If the loop isn’t working then pick up the phone in your room or walk down to the front desk or club lounge. Now that I’ve given the basics about the resort and some tips, I’ll get into the rest of my review. Arrival: We had Club Mobay (vipattractions). From touch down until we were at the Sandals lounge was 36 minutes (this includes taxi, gating and disembarking). We had our own local private driver (Joe Cool Taxi and Tours) and waited 4 minutes for them to pick us up. The drive took us 1hr and 15 minutes. Upon arrival at the resort we were greeted with cool lemon grass scented towels, our carry on suite cases were tagged with our room number and we were promptly escorted to the Sandals Club lounge. Since we arrived before check in time (3:00pm) we were not able to get to our room. We were prepared and had our beach gear with us. We immediately headed to the beach (exactly 25 minutes after arrival) to relax after a long morning and afternoon. At 3:00pm we headed back to the club lounge where our butler was ready to escort us to our room. Room: Honeymoon Beachfront One Bedroom Butler Suite - 1B This room is on the 2nd and 3rd floors in the Dutch Village butler wing. These rooms are getting an overhaul this year (2020). My description of the room is how the room appears now. We were on the 3rd floor and a corner room which was nice. The down side is that the sun is on the balcony in the afternoon making it very hot so we stayed on the beach until about an hour before sunset. Plus side with the corner room was having an amazing view of the sunset. The other rooms in the Dutch butler wing may be able to see it too, I’m not sure. Do note: there are some trees blocking the view of the water. The higher the floor the better the view. When you walk in, you are walking into a living room with a sectional couch , two end tables, a coffee table, a T.V. above a wet bar. There is a coffee maker with coffee cups, coffee (decaf and regular) as well as teas, sugars and creamers, tea kettle, a mini fridge filled with soda, water, fruit drinks, wine and champagne. We also had a mini bar with gin, vodka, rum and scotch (CLUB LEVEL AND BUTLER LEVEL ONLY GETS ALCOHOL OTHER THAN WINE AND BEER). There are also wine glasses and regular 8oz glasses for drinks. Next, the bedroom. A decent size room with a king bed, two night stands, a large bureau, and a wall mounted T.V. There is also a large picture window with plantation shutters so you can see the wonderful view of the beach and ocean while lounging in bed. There is a closet with hangers, robes, slippers and a safe. There is a vanity area that is open to the bathroom area. The bathroom had a dual sink vanity, shampoo, conditioner, body wash, body lotion, bar soaps, qtips, sewing kit and cotton balls (all rooms), a jetted tub and double doors that lead to the shower and toilet. The balcony is right off the living room and is much larger than the balconies of the Club and Luxury level rooms and suites. All rooms do face the ocean, it just depends on what floor and what location in the building you are on (the buildings are in a semi-circle shape)as to what your view will be of the ocean (straight on in front or straight on side or none). Our room being in the butler wing had a beach and ocean view albeit slightly blocked by trees. Room Service: Butler level guests have 24hr room service. This means, guests can order from most menus on resort during the working hours of their butlers. After working hours of the butlers, guests can order from the standard club and butler room service menu. A side note: only club and butler level rooms are eligible for room service. Club is a limited menu and times. As stated above, butler is 24hrs and most restaurants on resort. *Luxury level rooms do not get room service.* Restaurants: There are nine restaurants on the resort (one is lunch only plus Café de Paris so really there are seven options for dinner). Bayside (buffet at breakfast and lunch, French ala cart) Giuseppe’s (lunch pizza on the piazza, dinner Italian) Eleanor’s (West Indian *Resort Evening Attire*) Jasmines (Asian) Schooner’s (lunch beach fare and regional cuisine, dinner regional cuisine and sea food) Neptune’s (lunch beach fare, dinner Mediterranean, late night snacks) Sushi on the Sand (dinner Sushi) Jerk Shack (lunch only) Café de Paris (pastries, coffee’s, cakes *open early to late*) My husband frequented Bayside for breakfast and I went to Café de Paris and got a banana Nutella crepe (amazing!) For lunch we went to the jerk shack or Schooner’s. Jerk shack obviously was for jerk chicken and pork. Schooner’s was for Jamaican beef and chicken patties For dinner we went to all the reasutrants except Sushi on the Sand. Food is subjective but we can honestly say that we did not have a bad meal. Some were better than others but none were bad. Butler Snacks: We had snacks in our room daily. Fruits, cheeses and meats, cake, cookies, shrimp cocktail. This is all part of butler service. It was very nice having treats in our room when we came up from the beach. Bars 6: Rivera pool bar (main pool) Dutch pool bar (frequented this one, also brought our own mugs) French pool bar Martini bar (this is where the action is at night) Neptune’s We went to the Dutch bar as our chairs were right there when we wanted mixed drinks or our butlers brought us mixed drinks. All drinks were strong and not watered down like some have said. We were also drinking what was in our butler provided cooler (water, beer, wine and pineapple guava juice). Footprints newspaper: There is a newspaper left in your room every night that lets you know the next day/nights activities. Note: if you have the Sandals/Beaches app on your phone you can also view the activities there. Nightly Entertainment: Every night there is a different form of entertainment. The entertainment ranges from steel drums to opera to a full out beach buffet with performers. The martini bar is also where there is a piano sing along, karaoke and dancing. We didn’t really partake in any of the entertainment just the steel drums, beach party, white night and one other show. Daily Entertainment/activities: We did not participate in. There were activities at the main pool in the piazza and the French pool. There is also a gym, basketball, tennis, water sports (listed on Sandals website), etc. My husband dove daily and I relaxed. Excursions: The only one we did was the castle tour (it’s across the street) with Adrian the GM. It was about 1 ½ hours and really informative. Around the resort The resort sits on 2 miles of beach including the beach to either side of Sandals property. From end to end of Sandals property takes approximately 9-10 min to walk, depending on how fast you walk. The actual distance beach side at the water line from guard hut to guard hut is .54 miles There are three villages (Italian which is closest to all the restaurants), Dutch (in the middle and the most quiet) and French (farthest from the restaurants *see above statement on length of time to walk end to end*). The grounds: Amazingly beautiful and very well kept. Tip: stop and speak with the gardeners, they will be more than happy to answer any questions about the plants. There are cats on resort that are very friendly. They do not pester so no worries if you are not a cat person. Off property past French Village: A definite must! This is totally unlandscaped and undeveloped (nature preserve) beach. Yes, you will encounter washed up sea grass and also some trash but that cannot be helped as people are careless and just throw trash in the ocean and then it washes up where the winds and current take it. I walked this section of beach daily. The beach: Very spread out which is one of the reasons we keep coming back. As part of our butler service, our butlers reserved our beach chairs for us. Chairs are plentiful though so even non butler guests will not have an issue finding chairs. Now, if you must have a specific spot on the beach or at the pools you may need to get up earlier to “reserve” that spot. The ocean: I’ll just get right to it. There’s lots of sea grass living on the bottom in which sea urchins live. Water shoes are a wise idea. The water ranges from murky to clear but then murky as soon as you step in it. The bottom is a muddy feeling. We were lucky most of the week in that the water was clear so we could see the sea grass and skirt around it. In all honesty though, I never got in past my thighs as there was just too much sea grass. I also did not notice a lot of people in. This is more of a lounge on the beach type of resort and use the pools versus the ocean. The pools: There are 3 Main pool with swim up bar and a hot tub which is located in the piazza. This is a very large pool and is where most of the activities take place. Dutch pool and hot tub. Quite pool with no pool bar but a bar right outside of it. French pool with swim up bar and a hot tub. This is where pool volleyball takes place. There is also a large hot tub in the Italian village. Beach Towels: The towels were out bright and early and we never had any trouble getting new towels when ours became too wet to use. There are several beach towel stations throughout the resort. If one is empty simply walk to another one. Club Sandals: We did not use except when we arrived and waited for our butler. However, there are comfy couches and chairs, a large TV, snacks, alcohol to make your own drinks, bottled water, juices, coffee machine, games, books, etc. This lounge is for Club and Butler guests only. It is staffed from 8am until 9pm and after that is by key card access. Staff: All the staff were wonderful. Everyone from the grounds crew, the bartenders, the servers, the housekeepers and everyone in between was so amazingly friendly and funny. Our butlers, Camille and Omar were amazing. There’s so many other staff members that I wish I could remember all of their names as they made our stay very pleasant. Butler Service: Is it worth it? Another one of those subjective questions. We loved Camille and Omar! What wonderful personalities they have. That being said, would we do it again? Yes, if, like this trip, I got a really good deal. Otherwise, no. We are very independent people and like doing things our way in our own time therefore, we didn’t fully utilize our butlers. What we loved most about butler service: reserved beach chairs and cooler, ordering room service from most menus every night, the snacks, the bubble bath that was drawn for me, the nice touches with the big towel art on our bed and of course the room. Departure: We got our “marching orders” the night before departure. This is a little envelope left in your room that alerts you to what time your bags need to be outside your room for pick up and what time your transport is back to the airport. We got up at 5:00 a.m., went down to our chairs on the beach, went for a walk and then came back to the beach. Since our car wasn’t picking us up until 11:00pam we were able to remain on the beach until 10:00am. When it was time, we headed to our room to quickly shower and pack. Carryon only comes in handy for departure day, not much to pack up. We took our own bags instead of having them pick them up. Omar met us at our room and took us to the club lounge to check out. Once checked out Omar walked us to the lobby and bid us farewell as our car was waiting for us. Once at the airport we headed for the Club Mobay fast track as we had no bags to check. Again, we were fast tracked though the mess that is security and told how to find the Club Mobay lounge. We found the lounge easily (left hand side right past gate 9) and were greeted with a friendly smile. We had a few snacks (there are chicken, beef or vegetable patties also sushi, little sandwiches, soup, deserts, muffins, bagels, coffee, juice and tea). You can also order any alcoholic beverage you want (plus water and soda) from the bar which we did. There is also free Wi-Fi. You can also get a wristband to walk around and shop if you would like and then come back. Overall Experience: The resort an A/B Club Mobay an A (when the lines are really long it’s a life saver) Mobay airport - it’s hard to say since we had Club Mobay Read less

I am BEYOND disappointed with my trip to Sandals, and WILL NEVER again stay at a Sandals resort!! There was ALWAYS a problem with something. We had concierge service, meaning they were supposed to refill our refrigerators every day, this did not happen. Circulars were suppose to be placed in our rooms every night for the next day, this did not occur. Not to mention if you miss room keeping, good luck getting any service when they are gone. My husband has a fish allergy and every where we went, we let them know, but it's like even though they ask they don't pay attention to it as we received plates with shrimp on top of it. We were there for a wedding, and it rained after the ceremony, but NO ONE in terms of the staff, and wedding coordinator had helped us, or directed us to where to go after and treated ALL of us like the bottom of the barrel. IT WAS HORRIBLE. Not to mention it seems as though it rains about every day between 2pm-4pm. Restaurants are pretty much ALL located in 1 area and the portions are small. I WOULD NOT RECOMMEND THIS PLACE TO ANYONE!!!! SAVE YOUR MONEY!! IT IS NOT WORTH IT! Read less

We traveled for our 20th Anniversary and had a wonderful time!! Our butler Leon exceeded all our expectations and made this an unforgettable experience from the moment we walked in throughout or entire visit. Our Bungalow was perfectly located and we are already looking forward to going back again.

With most of my reviews, I try to provide some context. I think it makes sense to read a review from someone that has a similar personality and lifestyle because reading a review from someone so opposite from your likes and dislikes is challenging. Sandals South Coast is a prime example of a property that will appeal to a particular subset of travelers (those looking for a more out of the way, quiet place to visit). So... here you go: TL;DR - amazing property, book here if you want a wonderful getaway from virtually everything. The pools are fine, the water has some seagrass but... you know... nature. Sandals has an incredible product so book with confidence. (M) - 48 (F) - 48, no kids this trip Fairly well traveled (Southeast Asia, England, France, much of The US, much of The Caribbean). Fourth or fifth trip to Jamaica. The first trip was to Sandals Dunns River Falls (no longer in operation) 25 years ago, second was to Ritz Carlton (now a Hilton property) and a few stops during cruises. We tend to be more low key. Not looking for shopping, bars or nightlife. Beach, pool sitting, spa, gym, watersports, and dining tend to be the top of the list. We wanted to do something a bit different for our 25th wedding anniversary. For most of the last 18 years, our vacations were around school breaks and in places that catered more to things that kids would enjoy. We had been to a Sandals property on our honeymoon and had a great time so we were familiar with the brand. We wanted to see if the offering was the same, better or worse so we looked at Sandals again but the choice was then around which location. We love the Jamaican culture of being generally laid back about most things so Jamaica made sense. From there, which property was most appealing. Again, we are at an age and maintain a lifestyle of being pretty relaxed on vacation so we wanted a spot to really get away from things. South Coast seemed to fit the bill and we were absolutely correct on choosing this option. I'll start at booking - easy to book, great UI/UX on the site. The phone staff was always incredibly helpful. Travel was easy for us - Delta has direct from Boston to Montego Bay. Arrival - definitely choose the MoBay option if it is available (book that the minute you book your air travel options). The Jamaica immigration process stinks as it is super, super busy, not large enough to handle the volume of people that typically arrive at the same time. You may be thinking... two people with no kids, why did you arrive with everyone else. Well, great question! We had to do a trip around a school schedule as our son is a senior in high school still. If you have the option to travel during 'off' times, do so. I am willing to be the immigration issue is much better on a Wednesday morning than on a Saturday or Sunday. If you are traveling on a more typical schedule, definitely book MoBay. Sandals arrival lounge - This is the only place where I would knock a couple of stars off a review. Certainly not enough to mess with the entire experience, but worth noting. The arrival lounge, although a nice idea, is pretty tired and was in rough shape when we arrived. It is quite small, on the day and time we were there (again, could be a peak travel thing) virtually nothing was available. Both beer taps were out of Red Stripe, soda was not available and virtually the only thing available was a few rum cakes... that's it. You are typically there only a short amount of time, but still... a miss on their part and something that is atypical for a Sandals offering. Travel to the property - We took a private car (booked through Sandals directly). This is an excellent service. Our driver was great in that he provided a cooler with wine, beer, fruit juice and water for us to enjoy on our hour and a half trip from the airport to South Coast. Also provided was a small plate of finger food to enjoy. Half of the road is quite windy, relatively slow going and a bit bumpy. The other half was a recently rebuilt road that was smooth and comfortable. If you are prone to car sickness, grab some medicine before that drive. Going by car probably shortened the trip by fifteen minutes just because of the speed at which a car can drive versus an entire bus. Arrival - Sandals always does a great job of 'welcoming you home' upon your arrival. You immediately feel like you are truly on vacation the minute you set foot on property. We booked a butler suite so we were taken to the club level check-in which is separate from the main lobby where you would check in otherwise. Club Level/Butler Suites - The club level check-in is a smaller outbuilding near the 'Italian' building of rooms. South Coast is divided into three, unique villages. The Italian Village is closest to all the restaurants, bars, and main services. The Dutch and French Villages are all a little further away, but nothing more than a short walk to the restaurants. The check-in was super fast and we were immediately introduced to our butler that took us to our suite. The Accommodations - We booked a 'Monarch' Oceanfront Butler Suite (class MO). This was a fairly large, one-bedroom suite with a separate sitting room, large balcony with two chairs and a table (plenty of room for breakfast outside each morning), a large bathroom with a tub and walk-in shower and separate toilet room. We opted not to do the beachfront/walk-out room as we wanted more of a view of the water and didn't want people walking right in front of our room each day/night. In the end, this proved to be the right choice. The upgraded cost for the beachfront, walkout room was not something that made a lot of sense to us. We were in room 1425 which was a corner room and allowed a better view because we could see to the left off our balcony as well as straight forward to the beach... a nice bonus if you can get it. The room was comfortable, the bed was great, the bathroom was well appointed and the sitting area is quite large. In the butler suite, you have a fully stocked bar included with whatever liquor and mixers you want for the week. The Butler(s) - The guys that helped us during the week could not have been better. Devon and Davion were incredibly helpful. We had a phone whereby they could be reached at almost any time. We really never had to do much other than ask them to help with anything we needed. They booked dinner reservations, a trip on the catamaran to Pelican Bar (a must-do, BTW), spa services, and anything else you need during the week. This was certainly not necessary at South Coast as the property is so large and you have so many dinner choices, it's not like getting in anywhere would be a struggle. But butler service came with the bigger room so, why not? Dining - There are so many choices on property that it would be hard not to appeal to even the most discriminating of tastes. You have a number of casual options, snacks, coffee and desserts option, and finer dining options as well. I found the food to be quite good. I would put it on the level of a higher-end cruise, but know that this is an all-inclusive property with one hell of a lot of guests at any given time. You are not dealing with five-star, independently owned establishments, but you still get a very good dinner (considering the price), with many different options at each different restaurant. Bars - All-inclusive certainly means just that. You will never be at a loss when looking for a cocktail. Latitudes over-water bar is amazing. This is such a cool place to grab a glass of wine, sit at the bar or on one of the over-water hammocks and watch the sunset every day. Sandals always seems to find that unique offering that is missing in most hotels and this one doesn't disappoint. The swim-up bar (apparently, another idea pioneered by Sandals) is ever-present in their pools and is always a fun thing to use. Watersports - One huge win from Sandals is their included watersports. There is no extra fee for stand-up paddleboarding, sailing, water skiing, or tubing. They have a scuba training facility on property that offers classes to beginners and they looked to be doing two dive trips per day. The Pools - not sure what folks are talking about with cloudy pools but if there was an issue, that seems to be fixed. I did see someone cleaning the pools most mornings and the water was crystal clear every day. The property has three massive pools and one very large hot tub (located in the Italian Village) that were always really well maintained. Overwater Bungalows - these were quite cool to see but they definitely are at the end of the property and quite far from the dining options. If you are looking to lock yourself away on a honeymoon week and not see a soul, however, this would be a really great way to do just that! The Beach - If you were to walk end to end on the available property at South Coast, you would walk over three-quarters of a mile just on the beach. It is a huge stretch of land. The water is beautiful with a reef that is visible about a quarter of a mile out. There is, indeed, a bit of sea-grass all along the coast, but that's a Nature problem and not something that Sandals controls. Bring some water shoes if you want and venture out. There are spots, though, that you can still walk in the sand and not be bothered by the grass. There are plenty of chairs, some trees to find shade and a few cabanas as well as palm frond umbrella structures as well. Our Butler secured a place for us each day and provided a cooler full of refreshments for us every morning and was available any time to provide something from the bar as well as snacks upon request. Entertainment - we are not big on entertainment as a whole, but the theater on property is quite large and we did catch a few of the shows. Do not expect Las Vegas, Broadway or London level of entertainment, but the shows were fun and a great way to pass an hour or so each night. There was usually music being played somewhere every night and a 'nightclub' was available each night when the martini bar doubled as a club with a DJ for late night dancing. Tennis - The tennis courts are quite nice and recently refinished Gym - The gym is quite large but the equipment is a bit dated. Plenty of free weights and CV equipment, though. Certainly fine for a week or two on vacation. Excursions - We went on the Pelican Bar catamaran trip and enjoyed that immensely. The bar itself is quite a spectacle. The trip out and back, though, was great. The boat is incredibly well maintained, the staff was super helpful and fun, they played music throughout the trip, there was a fully stocked bar and a good bit of food. There is a restroom on the boat and plenty of room to spread out. There is plenty of shade for those that want to shelter from the hot sun as well. There were a couple of other trips available as well such as the Appleton Rum tour, a trip to a local nature park and a few other side trips. Because South Coast is relatively far away from the tourist centers of Jamaica, there are not a lot of options off property. If you are looking for more options or nightlife away from Sandals, Ocho Rios is a much better bet. If you are looking for a very quiet, secluded vacation, Sandals South Coast is the place to look. Extras - The only other thing that we did was a sunset dinner over the water. This was an extra charge and I honestly didn't really have an expectation here. I am really glad that we chose to do this, though. It was quite romantic and certainly not something that you get to do every day. Well worth it if you want a fun extra during your vacation. The Overall Property - One major thing that stands out about Sandals properties, in general, is that they are always meticulously maintained. Every single morning they have an army of landscapers, maintenance folks and cleaners that make the place look brand new. The marketing videos and photos don't lie - these places look like this all the time. We happened to hit a patch of weather that had a great deal of wind and this certainly seemed to challenge the staff. Even still, by 10 am most of the grounds crew disappeared and the place was put back in picture-perfect shape for another day of enjoyment. People have mentioned (and YouTube videos show) that the Dutch and French Village rooms are a bit dated. These are currently undergoing renovations and not staying in them I can't speak personally to their condition, but they do look dated and I would recommend the Italian Village rooms for a more up to date suite. If you are looking at a bit more of a budget option, the other villages are fine because you have full access to all other aspects of the property - no matter if you pay the absolute top rate or the lowest available rack rates for your stay. The Staff - as mentioned, this could be a Jamaica thing but I don't think so. Every person that we interacted with was incredibly helpful, upbeat and fun to speak with. People made it a point to say hello, ask how things were going and be curious as to what you thought of your vacation so far. In our room was a book about the founder of Sandals and it was fun to read about the history of his businesses and his attention to customer service. That company culture clearly still stands today as every single person at this property follows that same mantra. I would highly recommend a Sandals property and I would suggest South Coast for your next choice for vacation. There are not a lot of places that I have been in the world where I would really want to return soon, but this is one that I can confidently say I will be returning to sooner, rather than later.
