UNICO 20 87

Riviera Maya, Mexico

The hotel

There’s a certain sense of exclusivity at UNICO 20°N 87°W, a high-end adult-only haven on the white sands of the Riviera Maya. It might be because of the Anfitrión ‘butlers’ taking care of everything from unpacking to preparing spa tubs. Or it might be because it’s reserved just for grownups, giving you a sense of calm whether you’re sinking into a lounger by the fashionably geometric pool, losing yourself in spa and salon treatments, or finding yourself with holistic yoga or meditation. Redefining the meaning of all-inclusive, UNICO 20°N 87°W offers the unexpected with an extensive inclusions programme. Handpicked local adventures and excursions offer an up-close and personal experience of the local landscape, take a stroll and a swing at one of the local Golf Clubs, or begin a journey of wellbeing with one of the signature spa treatments.

We were hesitant about the distance from the airport (our travel agent assured us it was an easy drive and it was!). From the minute we stepped out of our transport the staff was friendly, welcoming, and helpful. The food here is AMAZING!! I have never been to an all-inclusive before but everyone we talked to said UNICO by far had the best food and drinks! The beach is okay so we spent our time by the pools (there are so many and when we went - end of Sept/beginning of Oct they weren't too crowded). If you go, get the seafood tacos at the bar with the pizza oven, everything was amazing!! Read less

The trip organizers for our wedding party: TRIP-GUY did an amazing job. The follow-up by this team was impeccable (Christine F was our contact and she was a great coordinator), the details received by emails and mail were perfect. We never had such a team working so hard and being on top of everything before a trip. The Unico hotel setting is very nice: beautiful lobby, lovely gardens. Our room was a swim-up room, meaning it had a small pool in front of our patio - that was delightful. My 4-star rating comes from the fact that we were not impressed by the restaurants (at the exception of great service by the staff). Among the 3 restaurants we tried, the 20 87 Restaurant was by far the best in terms of food quality and selection - excellent buffets at breakfast and lunch time with huge varieties of dishes. We dine there one night and the a-la-carte menu was very good. Then we tried the Italian place - Mi Carisa, and although the food was good overall, it was not that remarkable. Again the service there was excellent. Our biggest disappointment was the Mexican place: being in Mexico, you expect the best and this restaurant was far from being impressive. The food was just ok and overall pretty bland (exception: very good guacamole made fresh in front of us). It did not even come close to some of the food I had in the past in private restaurants across Mexico. Again service was excellent there, especially Erik. ONE IMPRESSIVE FEATURE AT THIS HOTEL: THE STAFF. This is by far the best staff I have ever met: everyone went out of their way to help and please. The friendliness of all servers and other staff members from the moment we arrive in front of the hotel and throughout the stay is unbelievable. At the beach, Nicolas and his team were incredible and very impressive: hard working, walking back and forth between the beach and the hotel kitchen to bring food and drinks to customers on the beach, always with a smile and with funny comments. Wonderful people! At the 20 87 Restaurant, Cony was a friendly server, always trying to please and help. Thank you Cony: you made our stay even better thanks to your pleasant manners and personable attitude. The cleaning crew of our room was exceptional as well: Thank you Vikki, Olga and the evening crew, which I did not meet but created a beautiful ambience each evening with flowers and chocolates on the bed. The welcoming staff was also great. And the drivers with Lomas Transportation from and to the Airport were amazing: Lucio and Mauricio especially did an incredible job for us. The staff really made our stay very enjoyable. Read less

My husband and I celebrated our 5 year anniversary at UNICO. This is definitely a laid back resort and made for relaxation. There was not a whole lot of nightly entertainment, however we were thankful that our travel agent shared with us the information for Club Heaven at Hard Rock! Our host Edgardo Garcia did an awesome job getting us scheduled to go to Club Heaven. He even had a great surprise for us upon checkin too. The resort does have tons of activities on the schedule throughout the day, so you always have something to do.  With this being only our second AI experience, I will say thus far UNICO had the best food!  Everything we had was amazing and we really enjoyed the Mayan coffee. And the spa services were also incredible as well.  Only downside was that I did get sick our last night, which made our travel back home a little rough for me.  However, it was a nice touch to receive a message from Edgardo checking in to see how I was feeling and to make sure we made it home safely. Overall, we had a great experience and we would definitely visit UNICO again.   Read less

I have mobility problems. My main problems are steps, bath tubs with showers, showers with no hand holds, slanted surfaces, balance - you name it. I need a shower with a chair or built in flip down seat. I get around well with a walker but have problems with distances. It is very difficult to find resorts that meet my needs. Normally I get there and they play the not available room game and I am in a very bad room until I get moved and then it is always problematic. So, several years ago I gave up on resorts after a bad and expensive experience in Jamaica. Went to cruises. With them you get a good guaranteed room that is fully accessible. I also added renting a mobility scooter which is easy to do and ships are geared for them. I do not go ashore but just enjoy group dining and the entertainment and lectures. This year I wanted to try resorts again. Early October and a swim up bar as that is where all the good conversations are plus in the water (can't do this on a ship) I have good mobility. Cancun (Mexico still warm) area is a very short nonstop from my home so I looked up scooter rentals and asked them to recommend resorts as I figured if a scooter goes to a resort it must be reasonably accessible. UNICO popped up and my research made it look positive. Contacted them and they said had an accessible room that a scooter would work with as to door size and place to park and charge it. When I contacted them by email, I got a fast and helpful professional response and thought - things look good here. My wife and I paid a little extra for a private transfer as it is a little over an hour south of the airport and a group transfer typically involves seeing a lot of the country with multiple stops, taking a lot longer after a day of travel, uncomfortable and tight seats etc. Arriving and checking in was a great and smooth experience. Hot cloth, unique drink and pick your room fragrance was pure class -plus no time share garbage. My scooter was delivered. We started out in room 5101. Now to the first hiccup. The shower has no curtain, the drainage is poorly designed, is accessible - but when used water goes everywhere including outside the bath room (they provided a shower chair). Not good. Called front desk. I said we could put a towel dike around shower area and survive. They said we should move to another room if my scooter would get through the door. Went to 5110 and door was barely wide enough. Put shower chair in shower and it seemed just fine - so we moved. These were ground level rooms with the swim up feature and two hammocks on the outside veranda. Management was very responsive and handled the problem professionally to my satisfaction. As and aside the same shower on a ship or US national chains have a curtain and a boundary drain scupper to keep water in one area plus a fold down seat. UNICO could make some simple minor changes and have the same configuration. The wide door and great grab bars on the commode for this room would then make 5101 totally great. The total resort is a good 5-star place. I have been to about 50 resorts in Mexico and Caribbean over the years and this was probably the best as to service, attention to details, and atmosphere. The 20 87 restaurant and the Mexican one had great food, The Japanese and Italian ones were underwhelming. Had the Chateaubriand two times. I don't drink but I noted all the bar service was top shelf and the servers were extremely good. Same with wait staff in restaurants. WIFI was excellent all over. No dead spots inside or out. This is very unusual as most places only have a strong signal in the lobby. Scooter access was excellent all over the resort. Doors were a problem but there was always someone to open them for me. Pool access was excellent. Park scooter and walk in using nice handrail. Live saxophone player and pool DJ were nice touches to the fun atmosphere in the pool. Same with restaurants. Always a table that was easy to access. My wife never had a chair or umbrella problem at the beach. Lots of help on beach and minimal number of merchants. It is after all federal public property. Leaving and check out was seamless with lots of help. I loved the lack of nickel and dime you atmosphere as it truly was all inclusive. Bottled water was plentiful and included. Same with room snacks and various beverages in the refrigerator. Had one of my better resort weeks if not my best for a 76-year-old person. I probably was the oldest there but that made it interesting. This place is a keeper. Read less
