UNICO 20 87

Riviera Maya, Mexico

The hotel

There’s a certain sense of exclusivity at UNICO 20°N 87°W, a high-end adult-only haven on the white sands of the Riviera Maya. It might be because of the Anfitrión ‘butlers’ taking care of everything from unpacking to preparing spa tubs. Or it might be because it’s reserved just for grownups, giving you a sense of calm whether you’re sinking into a lounger by the fashionably geometric pool, losing yourself in spa and salon treatments, or finding yourself with holistic yoga or meditation. Redefining the meaning of all-inclusive, UNICO 20°N 87°W offers the unexpected with an extensive inclusions programme. Handpicked local adventures and excursions offer an up-close and personal experience of the local landscape, take a stroll and a swing at one of the local Golf Clubs, or begin a journey of wellbeing with one of the signature spa treatments.

Our stay at UNICO 2087 was spectacular! We had a truly wonderful time during our week long visit. The success of this trip was mostly due to the quality of service, the delicious food and the exceptionally well maintained property. Special thanks to Antonio our pool concierge (UNICA pool) who made sure all our needs were met on a daily basis (chairs, towels, shade, etc.) and the whole resort staff for greeting us with smiles and making sure all our needs were met. Although we didn't require her assistance, our local host was always reaching out to us to make sure everything was perfect - we really appreciated her reassuring presence. Even if this is an all-inclusive resort, we were happy to tip the staff as often as possible as they all truly deserved a little extra consideration for their hard work and dedication. We booked a standard king room and couldn't have asked for more. Beautifully decorated, with huge and intimate balcony. AC worked perfectly and the bed was confortable. Spacious and calm. Housekeeping were very effective and subtle. Turndown service was always a nice surprise. The highlight of our trip was surely the food. We had booked UNICO partly based on the fabulous food reviews and we were not disappointed. For dinner, we tried all four restaurants and were impressed by all of them. The quality of dishes and products was outstanding given this is an inclusive resort. Everything we had was good, if not great. We were especially surprised by the quality of the beef served on this resort (Rib eye, chateaubriand, etc.). As for logistics, we made reservations through the resort app before arriving and all our reservations were honored without delay or hesitation. We did notice guests with no reservations being told there were no tables available at their given time of choice. Maybe not ideal for those who like to go with the flow... but otherwise this seems easy to prevent as the app gives you all the tools to book in advance and at least three different staff members offered to help us with reservations once we arrived onsite. During the day, we mostly rested and hanged out by the pool. Three pools offer three different vibes. All beautiful, with at you chair drink and food service. The 2087 pool is great to socialize, partake in various activities and listen to music, including live DJ sets. La UNICA pool is near the party pool, but a little calmer. We spotted a lot of couples hanging around this pool, reading, sunbathing, etc. A little further, one can find the quiet pool away from the music and activities. We also really enjoyed our visit to the spa which was perfect. The hydrotherapy session was quite a fun surprise as an added bonus to our couples massage. This resort deserves a lot of praise for the outstanding service, the beautifully decorated property and its amazing food. We would come back in a heartbeat. Read less

My girlfriend and I arrived here from the UK and stayed for 9 nights. We've summarised our experience below. Room (5/5) We had an Ocean View room and it was absolutely fantastic. Clean, large, and an awesome view. The Housekeeping staff are friendly, and do a great job in keeping the room tidy and at a time that's convenient for you. Beach (0/5) As mentioned by a number of the reviews, the beach is non-existent. If you're a beach person, then this isn't the resort for you. Note though, that it's not in the hands of the hotel - it's a problem for the area (the seaweed!). Pools (4/5) The resort has 3 main pool areas - one at the front, one in front of the beach and one which has more of an exclusive feel to it. The one in the front of the beach is quite noisy and where all the games take place (volleyball, beer pong etc.) Being Brits, this reminded us of a Spring Break trip for a slightly older crowd. That said, we spent most of our time in the quiet, more pleasant pool which did the job for us. Special mention to the poolboys who did an excellent job - Jorge was great! Food (3.5/5) Breakfast and Lunch were standouts for us. We spent most of our time at the a la carte restaurant for Breakfast - special mention to Criselda! The lunch buffet was also great. Special mention to Luis! Dinner, however, didn't really give us a 5 star feel. It was satisfactory - the Mexican restaurant was terrible, the Italian was slightly better and the Asian was the best, although not great. If you've been to other 5 star inclusive resorts, this won't impress you. Service (5/5) Service on the whole was great at the resort. Staff were friendly and approachable. Drinks (3/5) Drinks were okay. They weren't strong and the popular drinks (Margaritas etc.) tend to be pre-made so are quite sweet and lack alcohol. The house wine was awful. Feel (5/5) Overall, however, the property does make you feel like you're in a 5 star resort for sure. It is clean and very well presented. TIPS One key thing to remember and this is certainly one for the Brits is to be mindful of is leaving tips. We did not realise this until we got here but it was clear to see that staff do expect tips at the resort (bar staff, waiters, pool boys etc.). It made a huge difference and fair enough - we were told how little staff make so please do tip them! Excursions We did one excursion to the Chichen Itza and the nearby Cenote. Whilst both were incredible, the tour itself left us with a sour taste. We wasted so much time being taken to buy junk souvenirs (the tour guide even said please spend 20 mins buying stuff!) I'd really recommend doing both, but doing research as to what the day actually looks like and what you spend your time doing. We left at 9am and we actually got to the Chichen Itza at 2pm (despite the Chichen Itza being 2.5 hours away!). Read less

Just arrived home from an outstanding 7 nights at UNICO - what a stunning and beautiful place to stay, best hotel by far that I have stayed in. Pools, rooms, spa, bars/restaurants were all amazing. The service was impeccable and could not have asked for more helpful staff. Firstly - Kristel who was our personal host was amazing, she could not of done more for us, she also helped me arrange a special birthday evening for my partner and made it so easier to communicate by WhatsApp. Alex at LaBotella was brilliant, we had a great evening wine and cheese tasting and he was so knowledgeable and you could really tell he loved his job. Louis who always held floating poker in the pool was fab, great guy and constantly laughing and joking with everyone. All the other staff were brilliant and could not have faulted them, always saying hello everyone you walked past. The food was amazing, could not have asked for more choice. The drinks were also great..all top brands and they had everything you could think of. They offer brilliant excursions and the personal hosts can organise this for you, you also have Vacation Makers in the lobby who can help with that too. Alex our tour guide to Kaan Luum Lagoon was brilliant and also the other tour guides we met were all brilliant. If your looking for a great beach this isn’t the resort for you - the beach is quite narrow in the area that the hotel is located and with quite a lot of seaweed..there is nothing you can do about it and for us it really didn’t matter..the hotel was amazing enough for us not to worry about it. Big fat 5* from us - would go back again in a heartbeat!! :) Read less

We experienced Unico this past week for family wedding. It was our first all inclusive. Upon arrival were were greeted with cool towel and warm smiles. Our room was a swim-up king and was absolutely lovely. Great service all way around and the property was beautiful. Downsides. Beach completely useless. It's covered in seaweed and we were told by locals it has been that way for 2 years, though hotel does not let you know it and still advertises beautiful beach with activities. The pools are gorgeous however they were sooooo warm, we think the black granite bottom really swelled the heat by midday making it not refreshing to escape the heat. Drinks were not consistent, some seemed like the right ingredients and others were a mystery. The hotel recommends making dinner RSVP each night. We discovered that without a rsvp they will tell you they can't seat you until after 9pm. So make sure you make the rsvp, the hotel has an app and you can use it to make rsvp before arrival. Also...If flying into Cancun airport be aware that Unico is a haul, over hour drive and even more if sharing a cab that makes other stops. The ride is not pretty which makes you appreciate the resort even more on arrival. If you like night life and evening activities THIS IS NOT RESORT FOR YOU. Once dinner is done there is just the lobby bar and a small disco that offer anything. Our group commented that if it had rained during our stay rendering the pool useless it could have been pretty boring since you can't leave the property unless wanted to take an hour round trip ride to town. Overall we enjoyed our stay because weather was perfect and we had family wedding. Unico 2087 was a one and done, onto the next for us. Read less
