Disney's Contemporary Resort

Walt Disney World, Orlando

The hotel

The closest hotel to the Magic Kingdom Park is the height of retro, '70s cool. The monorail enters the lobby through a 'curtain' of air to drop off and pick up. The stylish, gourmet 15th-floor California Grill restaurant offers incredible bird's-eye views over the Magic Kingdom Park. Meet your favourite characters in Chef Mickey's Restaurant, while tired parents can revive themselves in the cocktail lounge. There's a big swimming pool, tennis courts and even water-skiing on the lake.

I was a bit wary after reading the reviews, but overall was really impressed. Holly and Stacey at the front desk were very attentive, accommodating, and professional. Dinner at the Wave was great. The rooms were clean and the view was fantastic. I saw reviews that the lower floors are noisy- note that even on the 11th floor you can still hear noise from the pool area at night. The walk to MK is really short and the monorail ride is nice. At the end of the day, the pool was relaxing. The only thing that bothered us is not being allowed to have our drinks on the ledge of the pool within reach- we had to keep leaving the pool to walk to our chairs just to take sips of our drinks which isn't very convenient when you're trying to watch toddlers in the pool. Overall I would highly recommend this resort for easy access if you are spending a day at MK Read less

We took advantage of the current hotel discounts to stay at The Contemporary. Usually the room rates would be out of my budget, but with the parks closing between 5 to 7 PM each evening, I knew we would want a nice home base with dining and activities. Our stay was just one evening. We checked in through the Disney mobile app, so there was no front desk experience for us. We got a text when the room was ready and headed on down the hall to it. The room was clean, but we wiped it down with Clorox wipes as an extra precautionary measure. While there was no balcony, we did have a nice view of both the monorail and the top of the Cinderella's Castle. The pool and hot tub were open, but a little chilly with the wind that night, and outdoor evening movies were still happening. Coming out of dinner, we caught the tail end of the fireworks show on the outdoor movie screen. A strange thing to watch knowing the castle is all quiet behind you. Speaking of dinner - For our entertainment after the parks closed, I hade made us a reservation at the California Grill. This is one of my favorite restaurants on top of the Contemporary Hotel and we were lucky enough to eat during the sunset. One of the advantages of this restaurant is the walk out balconies where you can see different areas of Walt Disney World and Orlando. While the California Grill falls under the $$$$ category, there are plenty of items to be shared off the menu. Our waiter was wonderful and made sure to help us draw the meal out knowing we had nowhere else to be that evening. With limited capacity we had hardly any waits at the hotel. We ate at the counter service area for breakfast the next morning and ordered in our rooms via the mobile app. It was a quick walk to restaurant and our food was ready! There was also no lines for the monorail, and we did not have to share our compartment with any other guests as we made our way to the Magic Kingdom. Read less

My wife and I thought it would be a wonderful idea to do a "Disney Experience" for our first wedding anniversary. Not only was it a huge disappointment but it was also a big waste of time and money. The customer service was awful and the staff was clueless. We chose Disney for the experience and for the ease of transportation to and from the Theme Parks. Transportation was horrible and unorganized. It is not worth the money, Disney is a mess and no one cares. My advice is to save your money and stay somewhere else because there is no experience or convenience and there is no benefit to staying here. There is nothing special at all about the rooms here. The doors to the parks open at least 30 minutes early and you can rush to the first ride and be one of the first in line. You will not get to the park early if you use Disney bus transportation. The staff members tell you that the first bus comes an hour before but it is a lie. At the earliest they came about 45 minutes before the park opens. By the time you get there everyone is already in line inside the park. They also only allow five families per bus due to Covid which is understandable. We got to the bus stop 45 minutes early and were the second family to get in line but somehow the Disney Cast Member put 4 other families in front of us. It was just one of many bad customer service experiences we had with Disney. We were so disappointed. Read less

Just returned from a 3 day 2 night stay! Hotel is still worth the price! Pool was open til 10pm along with the sand bar, so that helped when we had to leave the parks at the new early Covid hours! My family and I are annual passholders and always had a routine, go to the parks in the morning, back to the hotel pool midday, and return when the sun went down. Ride lines were misleading, it would say 60 minutes, due to the 6' rule, they were wrapped around and past many other rides, but they went fast, more like 15-20 minutes. The masks really made our trip so different than previous times. Not seeing any smiles on the kids faces, nor the cast members which is what i feel makes this place special made it feel weird. The extreme heat and humidity also made the masks stick to your face. We lasted about 4 hours in each park before we called it a day and went back to the hotel/pool. My advice is to wait til the mask protocols are lifted and hours are extended. Read less

The lines are incredibly long and we ended up leaving by lunch time both days. The park attendants are flat out rude and it is not at all a magical experience. The restaurants at the Contemporary are awful. The first night, we could not even get a reservation so we were forced to order from the grab and go restaurant. 40 bucks for food that was not great! The second night we had a reservation at the Wave. We were with friends and had two tables reserved under each room. When we got to the restaurant, they told us they had a table for 8 for us. We never asked to combine the reservations and I was very angry. They refused to separate us as we asked. I argued with them for about 15 minutes and finally gave up. I ordered the special, which was described as salmon with risotto. It was not risotto and, instead, was a Spanish rice. I only ordered the dish to have the risotto. The whole experience was disappointing. I would definitely not eat there again. Final thought: we ate at the T-Rex last night. It’s in Disney springs and is awesome! A great way to end a not so great weekend. Read less
