Disney's Contemporary Resort

Walt Disney World, Orlando

The hotel

The closest hotel to the Magic Kingdom Park is the height of retro, '70s cool. The monorail enters the lobby through a 'curtain' of air to drop off and pick up. The stylish, gourmet 15th-floor California Grill restaurant offers incredible bird's-eye views over the Magic Kingdom Park. Meet your favourite characters in Chef Mickey's Restaurant, while tired parents can revive themselves in the cocktail lounge. There's a big swimming pool, tennis courts and even water-skiing on the lake.

Image of the Tripadvisor rating Overpriced, new rooms look BAD, but hotel close to Magic Kingdom

I have stayed at the Contemporary about a million times. It was always one of my favorite hotels. However, the new Incredibles theme looks TERRIBLE. It looks like a cheap IKEA design a five year old's bedroom. Trust me when I say that you're better off staying at another hotel that is A LOT cheaper, rather than spending almost $1,000 a night to stay in these rooms. ITS THAT BAD. Not staying here until the next refurb. And a lot of others agree if you look up anything about this. Look at the pictures. If your eyes can see past the rooms and you manage to hold down your food, the hotel is pretty good otherwise. It is close to the monorail and you can simply take a short stroll to the Magic Kingdom if there is a long wait. Some of the rooms are a REALLY far walk from the main tower, so beware of which room you are choosing. I did not get to eat at Chef Mickey's on my last trip. Typically was pretty good and it has a nice character meal for your kiddos. Now it is becoming more and more popular and crowded, so if you're crunched for time or want to hit the park early, you may want to skip out on this and simply get a Quick Service breakfast. Its pretty much the same food as Chef Mickey's. Read less

Disappointed in Disney Resorts: We have stayed at several different resorts at Disney over the years and our recent experience at the Contemporary Resort Garden Wing was a major let-down. The Disneyworld Reservations website does not inform guests of the following things, which I feel are important to know before considering booking there: No room service available right now. Only one sit-down restaurant open; itcloses at 9PM. No place to get anything to eat after 9PM-- we were told by front desk to order from Grub-Hub! The Disney App on our phone is what they want you to use to do everything--from opening your room door to ordering food (that you have to go pick up at the restaurant), to making a dining reservation. The problem is that we couldn't get ours to work with our door and the front desk told us they couldn't help because they couldn't even get their own app to work; that the app was "temporarily down." When the Disney App wouldn't work to open our door to our room, the front desk told us to go buy a $25.00 Magic Band. They didn't offer us a traditional room key card until we walked to the desk and asked for it. Hotel is very short-staffed; it was a long wait to speak with front desk. Housekeeping only includes a towel change and trash empty ever other day. Dated decor and room furniture and beds are in poor shape. No extra -special details in room that make staying at a Disney Resort special: animal shaped folded towels on bed, etc. Room technology is limited, charging stations not functioning, cable TV format is out-dated, no premium channels or Disney+, limited channel selection. TV is encased in the wall, making it impossible to plug in a streaming device, such as an Amazon Fire TV stick. WIFI was slow at best. Major renovations and construction is going on in the main building, so guests are being relocated to the Garden Wing, which is a walk and has the worst looking rooms and views. Bell Service was spotty. There were no luggage carts at the Garden Wing and the staff told me I had to walk all the way to the main building to get a cart if I needed one, (which I did). I couldn't get anyone at Bell Service to answer the phone. Read less

It has always been a dream of mine to stay at this hotel and figured since I was taking my daughter for her first Disney trip we would splurge a little and make it extra special for our whole family. We first booked the main building but received a call to let us know it would be under renovations when we were going. That was no problem because we could still stay in the garden wing. People have mentioned in other reviews it's outdated but I didn't really care because its the Contemporary and we would only really only be in the room to shower and sleep. We got there and the room seemed to be just fine. The only thing that really seemed to look old was maybe the carpet in the hallways. That didn't really matter to me though, the height of the ceiling is very low for a taller individual. My husband is 6'7" and only had a few inches above his head it seemed. Once we used the room for the 2 things we needed(showering and sleeping) Thats when we noticed the disappointment. The beds were not comfortable and seemed to be sloped down on the edges like they were just too worn. The shower I think was worse as where the shower tile meets the tub was gross. You could tell they were trying to cover the dirt with more and more caulking. It was very disappointing as I have never stayed here and growing up I thought this was the coolest hotel with the monorail going right through it. I might give it another chance once more renovations are done but not anytime soon. If it was not a Disney hotel I probably would have given it 1 star review. The cast members were all very wonderful throughout our stay but those two Things I just can't look past. Read less
Image of the Tripadvisor rating Stay at a different hotel…and Disney World overall is not in great shape post Covid

This is not the high-end hotel I remember from my childhood. The hotel is falling apart. Everything (rooms, common areas, pool, restaurants) feels like its stuck in the 1980s and is in need of a renovation. It’s a little depressing. Housekeeping is very limited: Beds are never done and housekeeping comes every second day only to clean the trash and to change the towels (apparently this is at all Disney properties). A pipe to the toilet burst and we lost water one afternoon. The proximity to the monorail should be nice but in reality it is faster to walk to the Magic Kingdom (15 minutes) than to take the monorail (20-25 minutes) and the hotel is far from all of the other parks. The kids did enjoy dinner at Chef Mickey which was the one highlight. Disney World overall feels a little like it is also falling apart. This is our 4th family trip here in the last 8 years and will be our last for a while. The parks are overwhelmed with people, no fast pass makes the lines unbearable and over 2 days we had 3 rides (Space Mountain, Big Thunder Mountain Railroad and Tower of Terror) break down while we were in line. In two cases we had to exit the line and in the 3rd case a 45 minute line took 1.5 hours. Many of the attractions are still closed which I assume is due to a shortage of staff but only makes the lines longer at the open attractions. Read less

The issue here is customer service. As many times as we have stayed on a Disney Property, this was the absolute worst experience. Even more, this is the only poor experience in my long history staying at Disney Properties. I couldn’t believe it! Post lockdown, we decided to splurge and try the Contemporary Resort. The room was nice but the customer service experience was a huge disappointment. I called a record 11 times for a down WI-FI Access Point in the Garden Tower covering my room. No call backs over 3 days and still the manager has not reached out or stopped by as the front desk and telecom support stated they were. TO CHARGE WHAT YOU CHARGE FOR THIS ROOM, GIVE GUESTS THE EXPERIENCE THEY PAY FOR AT A DISNEY PROPERTY, LET ALONE THE CONTEMPORARY RESORT! How does it take 3 days for a call back? Where is the manager? I went back to the front desk 4 times….. and waited 43 minutes. The front desk person said he couldn’t get anyone to answer the phone. UNBELIEVABLE! He couldn’t get the supervisor to come out either? So I call telecom support option 56, they said they were going to send a technician out to check the access point… I waited 2 hours twice and called back. They said the tech came by and it was ok. I said when? They said he didn’t go our room, he went next door and the AP there was up. I said why didn’t he or she come here so I can show them the heat map and where it’s dropping? They said the tech didn’t need to. Disney Support flat out lied…. UNREAL. NOBODY CAME HERE… I HAVE NEVER SEEN THIS BEFORE. My issue here is lying snd poor customer service. No management or supervisor follow up to resolve. NO ONE OFFERED TO ASSIST WITH OUR BAGS UPON ARRIVAL DO NOT OVERCHARGE PEOPLE FOR SERVICES YOU DO NOT HAVE. NICE WORK- California Grill and Mickey’s Cafe Restaurant wait staff and culinary staff. We always tip very well! This is Disney!! We check out tomorrow morning 7/19/2021. The property is sold out so they could not move us. What a joke!! If WI-FI is down or anything else, ok, no biggie. Don’t lie and just make it right especially FOR WHAT WE PAID FOR THIS ROOM! ACT LIKE DISNEY and don’t her people around.. Don’t call the front desk as nobody will pick up. I waited on hold 1 hour 23 minutes then hung up while watching TV. What a joke! Why open if you cannot support the guests? Read less
